Enabling software encoding does not, by itself, prove that x264 is causing a YouTube stream to drop frames. In OBS, open View → Stats while the problem is happening and identify which counter is rising: network-dropped frames, encoding lag (skipped frames), or rendering lag (missed frames). Each points to a different bottleneck and calls for a different fix.
The VM provider and instance, operating system, OBS version, encoder preset, stream settings and actual Stats counters are not specified here, so a case-specific root cause cannot be established. Use the workflow below to isolate it before changing VM size or lowering quality.
Identify which frames OBS is losing
Reproduce the issue before changing settings. In OBS, open View → Stats and note the counters, selected encoder and preset, CPU use, configured bitrate, and when the problem begins. Save the OBS log from a session that reproduces the issue. For a long-running stream, record whether the counter rises immediately or only after extended runtime; timing is useful evidence, but not a diagnosis by itself.
| OBS symptom | What it points to | Where to investigate |
|---|---|---|
| Network-dropped frames rise | The connection to YouTube’s ingest server is unstable or cannot keep up with the configured bitrate. | Upload capacity, routing, ingest selection, VPN or security software, and network drivers. |
| Encoding lag or skipped frames rise | The encoder cannot encode frames quickly enough for the selected output settings. | CPU capacity and load, encoder preset, resolution, frame rate, and scene workload. |
| Rendering lag or missed frames rise | OBS cannot composite and render frames on time. | GPU resources exposed to the VM, scene complexity, and resource-heavy sources or filters. |
These counters describe different stages of the stream. A software encoder can contribute to encoding lag, but the phrase “dropped frames” alone does not establish that it is the cause. OBS explains that network-dropped frames indicate an unstable connection to the remote server or inability to keep up with the set bitrate in its Stream Connection Troubleshooting guidance.

If network-dropped frames are rising
Check the path from the VM to YouTube rather than changing the encoder first. OBS recommends a speed test to check upload bitrate, and gives 75% of total upload speed as a troubleshooting starting point—not a guarantee of stable streaming. The usable capacity must be sustained by the actual VM-to-ingest path, not merely shown by a short speed test.
- Compare the configured bitrate with stable upload capacity. If capacity is inadequate or variable, lower the bitrate or address the network path.
- Try another YouTube ingest/server option if one is available, then compare the counter under the same stream conditions.
- Check whether a VPN, security software, network-prioritization software, network drivers, or provider routing is affecting the connection.
- On supported Windows builds, OBS lists network optimizations and TCP pacing. Its dynamic bitrate option can reduce quality to mitigate drops; it does not repair the underlying connection.
For supported formats, YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance recommends RTMP or RTMPS, CBR, a two-second keyframe interval (four seconds maximum), and a maximum frame rate of 60 fps. YouTube lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 as supported codecs. Its H.264 table, accessed in 2026, gives these figures:

| H.264 input format | YouTube-listed minimum | YouTube-listed recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p60 | 6 Mbps | 17 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 5 Mbps | 14 Mbps |
| 720p60 or 720p30 | 3 Mbps | 8 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s platform recommendations, not measurements of your VM’s throughput. Select a bitrate the VM can deliver continuously. YouTube says it transcodes live input to provide output formats for different devices and network conditions.
If encoding lag or skipped frames are rising
Reduce encoding work in a controlled way. OBS’s Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guidance notes that frame rate affects both rendering and encoding performance.

- Lower the output resolution and observe whether encoding lag falls.
- If it persists, lower the frame rate; OBS specifically suggests trying 30 fps when 60 fps is not working.
- Simplify the scene: reduce high-resolution media, expensive filters, and browser sources where possible.
- Change one variable at a time and compare the same Stats counters under comparable stream conditions.
- If the required quality still overloads software encoding, verify whether the current VM can provide more CPU capacity or an appropriate hardware encoder before changing instance type.
Do not assume that a more expensive VM or a generic GPU option will solve the problem. The provider, instance SKU, CPU quota or steal, and hardware-encoder capabilities exposed to the guest are unknown. Confirm what the VM actually makes available to OBS.
If rendering lag or missed frames are rising
Rendering is a separate workload from encoding. OBS needs GPU resources to composite and render scenes, and complex scenes and sources consume those resources. Check whether the VM exposes usable GPU resources to its guest and reduce scene complexity or resource-heavy sources to see whether the rendering counter changes. In a headless or virtualized VM, rendering and hardware-encoding capabilities depend on the environment; adding a GPU product without verifying what the guest can use may not help.

Test the stream before trusting it to run continuously
After making a change, run a representative test and monitor both OBS Stats and YouTube’s stream-health messages. YouTube recommends testing with movement and audio similar to the real stream. Keep the test bitrate, scene and media representative: a brief idle or static test cannot establish that a 24/7 stream will remain stable.
- Record the OBS counters and settings during the test so you can compare one change with another.
- Watch for the same symptom over a sustained run, especially if the failure previously appeared only after a delay.
- Confirm that the stream-health status remains acceptable and that the selected output quality is still suitable.
A stability claim for this Indian cloud VM requires evidence from that VM’s actual CPU, GPU exposure, sustained upload path to YouTube ingest, and representative runtime. The available details do not establish those capabilities or a guaranteed 24/7 outcome.

Common fixes that miss the cause
- Changing encoder settings for network drops: if only network-dropped frames rise, investigate bitrate and connectivity first; a lighter encoder does not repair an unstable route.
- Buying more CPU for rendering lag: rendering points to compositing resources and scene workload, so verify GPU exposure and simplify sources before assuming CPU is the issue.
- Relying on a short speed test: it does not prove that the VM can sustain the configured bitrate to the selected ingest server over a long stream.
- Changing several settings at once: you will not know which change affected the counter. Adjust one variable and repeat a comparable test.
- Assuming an Indian VM has a particular network or encoder capability: the region alone does not establish the VM’s sustained route, CPU capacity, or hardware exposed to OBS.
