If OBS reports “encoding overloaded” while streaming at 1080p, first try reducing 60 fps to 30 fps if the content allows it. If the problem continues, lower the stream’s Output (Scaled) Resolution—720p is a practical first test—while keeping the Base (Canvas) Resolution at 1080p if you want to preserve your scene layout. Then reduce demanding sources and filters. If you use x264, a faster CPU preset may help at a possible image-quality cost; a supported hardware encoder can move encoding work off the CPU.
Confirm that encoding is the problem
OBS’s “encoding overloaded” message and choppy output can mean the system is not keeping up with rendering or encoding. But a choppy stream does not automatically mean the CPU encoder is at fault: insufficient upload capacity is a separate issue. Start with OBS’s encoding performance troubleshooting guide and distinguish the OBS warning from delivery problems reported by YouTube.
Change one setting at a time, then test with the kind of motion and audio you expect in the actual stream. That makes it easier to tell which adjustment helped.
Which settings should you change first?
- Reduce frame rate: In OBS, open Settings > Video and try 30 in Common FPS Values if you are currently streaming at 60 fps. OBS notes that frame rate affects rendering and encoding performance. Use 30 fps when the material does not need the smoother motion of 60 fps.
- Reduce stream resolution: In Settings > Video, set Output (Scaled) Resolution to 1280Ă—720 as a practical first downscale from 1920Ă—1080. You can leave Base (Canvas) Resolution at 1920Ă—1080 if you want to keep your existing scene layout. The canvas is the space for arranging sources; output resolution is the resolution sent in the stream. A 720p output is a setting to test, not a guaranteed fix for every computer.
- Simplify scenes and sources: Disable or reduce costly filters, browser and media sources, high-resolution capture sources, and scene elements you do not need. Test after each change. Sources and filters can use system resources even when they are not visible.
- Review the encoder: If OBS is using x264, try a faster CPU Usage Preset and compare the image quality. A faster preset can reduce CPU work, but it is not visually free. If your system has a supported hardware encoder, test that option instead.
Choose the right resolution and frame rate
There is no universally best choice among 1080p30, 720p60, and 720p30: the result depends on your content, hardware, scene complexity, and available upload capacity. Use this comparison to choose what to test first.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Output | Detail | Motion | CPU and encoder headroom | When to test it |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1080p30 | More detail than 720p at the same frame rate. | Less smooth than 60 fps for fast motion. | Lower frame rate can reduce workload relative to 1080p60, but encoding stability depends on your system. | Try it when retaining 1080p detail matters more than 60 fps motion. |
| 720p60 | Less detail than 1080p. | Smoother motion than 30 fps. | Lower output resolution may reduce encoder load; 60 fps still affects rendering and encoding performance. | Try it when smooth motion matters and 1080p output is too demanding. |
| 720p30 | Less detail than 1080p. | Less smooth than 60 fps. | Combines a lower output resolution with a lower frame rate, making it a useful test when the other configurations still overload. | Try it when stability takes priority over detail and smoothness. |
These are trade-offs, not benchmark results. OBS and YouTube do not establish one configuration that will work best on every CPU, GPU, game, scene, or OBS version.
Choose an encoder without confusing it with a CPU fix
OBS recommends hardware encoding for performance when supported: a specialized component can take video encoding work off the CPU. OBS lists NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, Intel Quick Sync Video, and Apple VideoToolbox, subject to hardware and platform compatibility. Check the OBS hardware encoding guide for the relevant compatibility details.

Hardware encoding is not automatically the best image-quality choice at every bitrate. OBS warns that earlier-generation hardware encoders can produce lower image quality at the same bitrate than x264 using its default veryfast preset. Test your stream and compare the output. If you stay with x264, try a faster CPU Usage Preset only after considering the possible quality trade-off.
Set YouTube delivery settings separately
YouTube’s encoder recommendations help with ingest and delivery; they are not settings that directly cure CPU encoding overload. For H.264, YouTube recommends 14 Mbps for 1080p30 and 17 Mbps for 1080p60. For AV1 or H.265, the corresponding recommendations are 10 Mbps and 12 Mbps. These are YouTube-published recommendations; the page does not state a publication year. See YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the applicable codec guidance.

YouTube recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, with an interval no longer than four seconds. Follow the recommendations for your selected codec and resolution. Lowering bitrate alone should not be treated as the primary fix for CPU encoding overload.
Test before going live and check upload capacity
- Apply one OBS change, then test the planned resolution, frame rate, encoder, audio, and scene complexity.
- Use motion and audio similar to the real stream; a static test image may not reveal performance problems that appear during active content.
- Watch OBS for encoding warnings and review YouTube’s stream-health messages. YouTube advises testing before a live stream and monitoring stream health; see its live streaming tips.
- Check that your upload connection has enough capacity for the total stream bitrate. YouTube’s streaming tips recommend approximately 20% headroom above that bitrate. This addresses network delivery, not CPU encoding load.
Troubleshoot persistent overload
- OBS still reports encoding overloaded: Try 30 fps, then lower Output (Scaled) Resolution, then reduce scene and filter work. Change one item at a time and repeat a realistic test.
- CPU use remains high with x264: Test a faster CPU Usage Preset or, if your hardware and operating system support it, a hardware encoder. Compare the resulting image quality as well as CPU use.
- The stream is choppy but OBS does not report encoding overload: Do not assume encoding is the cause. Check YouTube stream-health messages and upload capacity, including the recommended headroom.
- The stream is stable but looks less clear after changing settings: Restore the setting that matters most to your content—resolution, frame rate, or encoder quality—and test a different compromise. YouTube’s recommended ingest bitrate does not guarantee a particular visual result on every scene or encoder.
