Fix a YouTube Playlist Stream That Disconnects When a Mumbai VPS Reboots

A reboot stops interactive processes. Identify whether your VPS publishes to YouTube or pulls a stream, then check boot startup, network readiness, and the relevant application or YouTube logs.

A VPS reboot stops processes that were started in an SSH session or as one-off background jobs. To bring a YouTube playlist stream back, first identify whether the VPS sends an encoder feed to YouTube or pulls a YouTube stream for playback, then run the right process under a boot-enabled service or supervisor and check its logs after a controlled restart. A restart policy can recover a crashed process, but it does not by itself configure the process to start at boot or guarantee YouTube will accept a connection.

First identify what the VPS is doing

“YouTube playlist stream” can describe two different setups. The fix depends on which one you have; the title alone does not establish the direction of the stream.

Setup What the VPS does Where to look when it fails
Publishing An encoder on the VPS sends video to YouTube Live, usually using a stream key. The service and encoder logs, then YouTube Live Control Room stream health or error details.
Pulling or playing A player or relay process on the VPS opens a YouTube stream or playlist. The service and player logs, source URL or playlist behavior, and the installed player or extractor version.

Before changing settings, record the exact launch command, process and service name, Linux distribution, client version, error message, and time of failure. Also note whether the failure happens immediately at boot, after the process starts, or later during playback. Mumbai describes the VPS location; the available evidence does not establish a Mumbai-specific outage, routing fault, or regional restriction.

Make the process start at boot

A command launched in an interactive SSH shell, terminal multiplexer, or one-off background job is not automatically recreated when the operating system reboots. Use a persistent service manager or equivalent supervisor configured to start the command at boot. On a systemd-based VPS, inspect the relevant unit with commands such as:

systemctl status your-service.service
systemctl is-enabled your-service.service
journalctl -u your-service.service -b

Replace your-service.service with the actual unit name. These commands check the current service status, whether it is enabled for boot, and its logs for the current boot. If the unit name is unknown, list services and identify the one that launches the actual encoder or player before editing anything.

  1. Confirm the command works manually. Check its executable path, working directory, input files, permissions, environment variables, and any credentials it needs. A service often runs with a different account and environment from an SSH shell.
  2. Configure a persistent service. The unit needs the correct user, command, paths, and any required secrets. Exact unit syntax depends on those details and on the VPS distribution; do not copy a generic unit as a production-ready configuration without adapting it.
  3. Enable and start it through the service manager. Enabling handles boot startup; starting launches it now. A restart-on-failure policy can be useful for a process that exits unexpectedly, but it is not a substitute for enabling boot startup.
  4. Test during a controlled maintenance window. Reboot only when it is safe to interrupt the stream. After startup, check service status, the boot’s journal entries, application logs, and the relevant YouTube status. This confirms what happened on your machine; it is not a guarantee that future network or YouTube errors will self-correct.

Check whether networking is ready when the service starts

A service can be enabled and still fail at boot if it tries to connect before networking is usable. In systemd, network.target does not mean that an internet connection is ready. network-online.target can delay dependent services until the network manager considers networking sufficiently configured, but its exact meaning depends on the network manager and a corresponding wait-online service.

If the process needs external connectivity immediately, check which network manager the VPS uses and whether its wait-online integration is enabled. Then consider ordering the service after network-online.target and requesting that target. This can add boot delay; it does not ensure that DNS, YouTube, or a particular endpoint is reachable. A client that retries transient network failures is generally more resilient than one that assumes its first connection will succeed. If supported, use the client’s documented retry behavior as well as appropriate startup ordering.

If the VPS publishes an encoder feed to YouTube

Follow this branch only if the VPS is sending the video to YouTube Live. Separate a local startup failure from an encoder connection failure: the service may be active while the encoder exits, cannot resolve or reach its destination, or is rejected by YouTube.

  1. Check the service and encoder logs around the failure time. Look for whether the encoder command ran, whether it opened its input, and the exact connection or authentication error.
  2. Check stream health and error messages in YouTube Live Control Room. Compare the message there with the encoder’s log rather than assuming every disconnect is caused by the VPS reboot.
  3. If a third-party encoder reports a startup error related to its stream key, get the current key from Live Control Room and update the encoder. Do not rotate a key that is working unless there is an observed key error.
  4. If you sign in through third-party streaming software without using a stream key, follow that software’s support path for the sign-in integration; stream-key troubleshooting is a different case.

DASH is one documented HTTP segment-delivery protocol used in YouTube live-streaming integrations. That fact alone does not show that your encoder uses DASH, and changing protocols without evidence is not a diagnosis.

If the VPS pulls or plays a YouTube stream

Follow this branch if the VPS is opening a YouTube stream or playlist rather than publishing an encoder feed. Check the player’s logs and version, whether the source URL or playlist still resolves, and whether the player is configured to repeat or reconnect. A system service can relaunch the player at boot, but it cannot fix an unsupported source, an application error, or a player that does not retry.

Streamlink documents --player-continuous-http as repeatedly opening a stream when a player requests it. It may help with disconnects when the player can reconnect to HTTP and is configured for repeat behavior; check the current Streamlink option documentation and compatibility for your installed release before using it. It does not replace boot-time service configuration. Streamlink’s player documentation also notes that VLC versions below 3 cannot play YouTube Live streams; that is a specific compatibility issue, not a universal fix for playlist interruptions.

Use the failure point to choose the fix

  • Service is disabled or absent after reboot: configure the persistent supervisor and enable the service for boot.
  • Service starts but reports “command not found” or missing files: correct the executable path, working directory, permissions, account, or environment used by the service.
  • Service starts before the network is usable: verify the network manager’s wait-online integration, consider network ordering, and configure client retries where supported.
  • Process starts and exits: use the application log and exit status to identify an input, configuration, permission, or application error before changing restart settings.
  • Player stays up but playback disconnects: investigate source and player behavior, version compatibility, and documented reconnect options.
  • Encoder runs but YouTube reports an error: compare the encoder output with Live Control Room status and follow the specific YouTube error path, including a current stream key only when the error indicates one is needed.

Keep the service-manager status, journal entries for the affected boot, application logs, and any YouTube error together. The useful diagnosis is the stage that failed—not simply that the stream was offline after a reboot.
