Use FFmpeg in two separate stages: first batch-encode prerecorded files offline, then send each prepared file to YouTube at real-time speed. For a broadly compatible H.264 profile, YouTube recommends 14 Mbps for 1080p30 and 8 Mbps for 720p30, with CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, and RTMP or RTMPS ingest. These are YouTube’s published ingest recommendations, reviewed 2026-10-03—not a guarantee that your connection can sustain the stream. Test from the location where you will broadcast, and check YouTube’s stream health before relying on the setup. YouTube’s live encoder settings do not specify a separate India-only encoder profile.
What you need before batch encoding
- An Ubuntu system with FFmpeg installed. Package availability and version depend on your Ubuntu release; check the release’s repositories and verify the installed build rather than assuming one version applies to every Ubuntu system. The Ubuntu Noble manpage is available at Ubuntu’s FFmpeg manpage, but it does not establish package details for other releases.
- Input videos you have permission to stream, plus enough disk space for a separate output directory.
- A YouTube channel eligible to live stream, a live-stream setup with its current ingestion address and stream name, and an outbound connection that can sustain the selected bitrate.
- A chosen output profile: resolution, frame rate, codec, and bitrate. Use the same profile consistently only if the source files and your upload capacity make that appropriate.
YouTube’s general computer-streaming guidance says the channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. Encoder streaming is distinct from mobile streaming. The mobile help page lists a 50-subscriber minimum and up to 24 hours for initial activation; those mobile conditions should not be mistaken for requirements of the computer encoder workflow. See YouTube’s computer live-streaming tips and YouTube’s Android mobile streaming guidance.
Choose an ingest profile and bitrate
YouTube supports RTMP/RTMPS ingest and lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video up to 60 fps. It recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport, CBR, a two-second keyframe interval (not more than four seconds), and AAC or MP3 audio. For SDR, its guidance includes Rec. 709, 8-bit, square pixels, and progressive scan; its stereo audio guidance is 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps. Refer to the current YouTube encoder settings page when you select a profile, since codec and frame rate affect the recommended bitrate.
| H.264 output profile | YouTube-recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| 720p30 | 8 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps |
| 1440p30 | 21 Mbps |
| 1440p60 | 34 Mbps |
| 2160p30 | 42 Mbps |
| 2160p60 | 50 Mbps |
These are YouTube’s recommended H.264 live-ingest targets, reviewed 2026-10-03. They are not the minimums: for example, YouTube lists 6 Mbps for H.264 720p30 and 12 Mbps for 720p60 as minimums, and 5 Mbps for 1080p30 and 6 Mbps for 1080p60. The corresponding recommended rates differ for H.265 and AV1; YouTube lists 10 Mbps for 1080p30 and 12 Mbps for 1080p60 for those codecs. Choose a rate your actual upload connection can sustain with headroom for variation; a higher target is not useful if the connection cannot carry it reliably.

For a first workflow, H.264 video with AAC audio is a practical compatibility-oriented choice. Whether your installed FFmpeg build includes a particular encoder depends on how that build was packaged. YouTube’s supported codec list does not guarantee that a given Ubuntu package includes each encoder.
Inspect the source files before processing
Do not apply one conversion blindly to a folder of mixed content. Check duration, dimensions, frame rate, audio streams, and orientation/aspect ratio so the output profile does not silently stretch images, remove audio, or impose an unintended frame-rate conversion.
Check FFmpeg and a file’s streams
ffmpeg -version
ffprobe -v error -show_entries format=duration:stream=codec_type,codec_name,width,height,r_frame_rate,sample_rate,channels -of default=noprint_wrappers=1 "input.mp4"
Repeat the probe for representative files, especially if the batch contains different frame rates, portrait video, variable frame rate sources, or files with multiple audio tracks. Decide whether to preserve each source’s rate or deliberately normalize to a common profile. If you normalize, choose scaling, cropping/padding, and audio mapping intentionally rather than assuming every input has the same layout.

Batch-encode to a separate output directory
The following Bash loop encodes MP4 inputs from one directory into a separate directory, preserves each basename, handles spaces in filenames, and reports individual failures while continuing through the batch. It illustrates an H.264 1080p30 rate target: 14 Mbps video, AAC stereo guidance at 128 Kbps and 44.1 kHz, and a 60-frame GOP for a two-second interval at 30 fps. It is a template, not a tested universal command. Confirm the input frame rate and dimensions first; change the profile, GOP, audio mapping, and scaling policy as needed. The FFmpeg project documents -b:v in bits per second and -g as the maximum GOP size. See FFmpeg’s full option documentation.
mkdir -p encoded
shopt -s nullglob
failed=0
for input in videos/*.mp4; do
name=${input##*/}
output="encoded/${name%.*}.mp4"
if ffmpeg -hide_banner -n -i "$input"
-c:v libx264 -b:v 14M -maxrate 14M -bufsize 28M
-g 60 -pix_fmt yuv420p
-c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
"$output"; then
printf 'Encoded: %sn' "$output"
else
printf 'FAILED: %sn' "$input" >&2
failed=1
fi
done
exit "$failed"
-n prevents overwriting an existing output, while -g 60 corresponds to two seconds only when the output is 30 fps. This example does not scale mismatched input dimensions or explicitly normalize frame rate. If a source is not already 30 fps, decide on a deliberate frame-rate conversion and matching GOP before using this profile. If a source has no audio, multiple audio tracks, or a different desired channel layout, adapt stream selection and audio options. Review the resulting files rather than assuming every unusual input will convert as intended.
For offline batch encoding, ordinarily do not add -re: let FFmpeg use available processing capacity instead of forcing each file to take its full playback duration. FFmpeg documents -re as useful for reading a file at its native rate to simulate a live input. Use it in the separate live playout stage. See FFmpeg documentation.

Send a prepared file to YouTube Live
In YouTube Studio, create or open the live stream and obtain the current ingestion address and stream name/key from its live setup. The Live Streaming API documents primary RTMP and RTMPS addresses and separately supplied stream names; depending on the encoder workflow, the name may be supplied separately or appended to the URL as STREAM_URL/STREAM_NAME. Do not rely on an endpoint copied from an old tutorial. Keep the stream key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your stream. See the YouTube LiveStreams API documentation.
Example live playout command
Replace the placeholders with the current values from your YouTube live setup; do not paste real credentials into shared scripts, logs, screenshots, or public documentation. This example assumes the prepared file already matches the selected output profile.

-c:v copy -c:a copy
-f flv "RTMPS_INGEST_URL/STREAM_NAME"
Here -re paces the file as a live input, and stream copy avoids encoding it a second time. Use the exact current URL/name format accepted by the chosen encoder setup. If YouTube reports an incompatible stream or the file’s codec/profile does not match the ingest requirements, prepare a compatible output and encode rather than copying. Do not expose the actual stream name or key when sharing a command.

Rehearse, monitor, and troubleshoot
Before relying on a batch and playout workflow, test a representative file with similar movement and audio to the intended programme. Start a private or otherwise appropriate test stream if that suits your channel setup, watch YouTube’s stream health and messages, and verify both picture and sound. YouTube advises testing upload capacity and stream behavior; bitrate recommendations alone do not establish that your local connection can sustain them.
Common problems and fixes
- Stream health warns about bitrate or drops: the available upload may not sustain the chosen ingest rate. Test from the actual broadcast location, reduce resolution or frame rate to a profile whose recommended rate is sustainable, and retest rather than simply repeating the same run.
- Keyframe or ingest warning: confirm the output uses CBR-style rate limits and a two-second GOP for its actual frame rate; do not exceed YouTube’s four-second maximum interval. For a constant 30 fps output, a 60-frame GOP is two seconds; at 60 fps, the corresponding value is 120.
- FFmpeg cannot find
libx264or another encoder: inspectffmpeg -encodersand use an Ubuntu package/build that includes the needed encoder, or choose an encoder available in your installed build. Package capability is release/build-dependent. - Output is stretched, cropped, unexpectedly soft, or has the wrong cadence: compare source and output dimensions, aspect ratio, pixel format, and frame rate. Add intentional scaling/padding or frame-rate conversion only after deciding how the source should be represented.
- No sound, wrong language, or unexpected audio: probe the file’s audio streams and select the intended track and channel layout. The sample assumes a suitable audio stream exists.
- YouTube does not receive the stream: refresh the live setup and use its current ingestion address and stream name; check network access and keep credentials private. A key copied from another stream or an outdated endpoint may not match the active setup.
- A batch job stops on one troublesome file: use the loop’s failure report to identify the input, probe it separately, and adapt the command for its codec, tracks, or container. A single profile is not appropriate for every exceptional source.
Copyright and channel-policy checks
Before streaming prerecorded material, make sure you have the necessary rights and check YouTube’s current copyright and live-stream policies. Encoding a file does not make it permissible to broadcast. Keep source and permission records for material you did not create, and review claims or restrictions surfaced in your channel. StreamNeo also provides a copyright safety checklist; it is a preparation aid, not a substitute for rights or policy review.
India-specific considerations
YouTube’s published encoder settings reviewed here do not establish a special India-only FFmpeg command, bitrate, or computer-encoder rule. For an Indian channel, the practical variable is still the outbound connection where the stream originates: test the actual uplink and leave headroom for fluctuations. Mobile live eligibility is a separate workflow and should not be used to infer encoder-stream requirements.
