A failing Ethernet cable can interrupt a YouTube livestream, but a dropout alone does not prove the cable is at fault. Reseat the plugs, inspect the cable, then test with a known-good replacement. If the stream still drops, check the router or switch port, available upload capacity, encoder, and YouTube’s stream-health indicators before replacing more equipment.
First, identify what is dropping
During the next interruption, note whether the computer loses its wired network link, the encoder reports a sending error, YouTube shows poor stream health, or viewers report playback trouble. Record the time and any warning shown by the computer, router or switch, encoder, or YouTube Live Control Room. These clues help locate the fault instead of treating every interruption as a cable problem.
Test the Ethernet cable
Reseat and inspect both ends
- Check that the cable is firmly plugged into the computer and the router or switch. Unplug and reconnect each end until it is fully seated.
- Look along the cable and at both plugs for visible damage, sharp kinks, or loose or broken retention clips. A plug that will not stay in place can lose contact when the cable moves.
This inspection is a practical diagnostic step, not a YouTube-prescribed checklist. YouTube recommends using an Ethernet connection when livestreaming from a computer. YouTube’s filming tips also caution that a shared high-speed connection may limit an individual user’s available outbound capacity.
Substitute a known-good cable
Connect a known-good Ethernet cable with compatible plugs and enough length to reach the same computer and router or switch. Keep the rest of the setup unchanged while testing. If the wired link and stream become stable with the replacement, the original cable is a strong suspect; replace it with a compatible patch cable. If the problem persists, continue diagnosing rather than repeatedly buying cables.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
A basic RJ45 Ethernet cable tester is optional and may help check a suspected cable, but it does not establish whether your internet connection can sustain the stream’s upload demand. A higher cable category or premium brand is not a cure for a faulty port, network congestion, ISP instability, or encoder trouble.
Rule out a port problem
If another suitable port is available, try a different router or switch port with the known-good cable. A stable connection on the second port points toward the original port as a possible cause; a continuing dropout does not confirm that either cable is faulty. This is a practical isolation step, not a YouTube requirement.

Check upload capacity against the stream bitrate
Run an outbound internet speed test while the network is under conditions similar to the stream—for example, at the time of day and with the other household or venue traffic that will be present. Download speed alone does not show whether you have enough upload capacity. YouTube says the total streaming bitrate must fit the available upload bandwidth and recommends leaving 20% headroom. Shared network use can reduce the capacity available to your stream. See YouTube’s streaming tips.
Compare sustainable upload capacity with the encoder’s total configured bitrate. Include any backup stream in that total if your encoder sends one. YouTube’s published figures below are recommended encoder bitrates, not universal internet-plan minimums or guarantees against dropouts. Match the setting to the codec, resolution, and frame rate actually selected in your encoder.

| Encoder configuration | YouTube-recommended bitrate |
|---|---|
| H.264, 1080p at 60 fps | 17 Mbps |
| H.264, 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265, 1080p at 60 fps | 12 Mbps |
| AV1 or H.265, 1080p at 30 fps | 10 Mbps |
These are the recommendations in YouTube’s encoder settings guidance; the returned help page does not state a publication date. If upload capacity is close to the total bitrate, reduce competing network traffic or choose an encoder bitrate your connection can sustain while preserving the recommended headroom.
Use YouTube and encoder indicators to isolate the cause
Compare the encoder preview with Live Control Room
Review the encoder preview, its error messages, YouTube’s stream health, and the computer’s CPU load. YouTube says that if the stream looks and sounds healthy in the encoder, an outbound connection problem may be responsible; test outbound connectivity and contact your ISP if a connection problem is found. Its troubleshooting guidance is at Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream.

YouTube’s streaming tips state, “A disruption on your connectivity could mean a broken stream.” That makes a network fault plausible, but it does not identify the Ethernet cable specifically.
Interpret viewer reports cautiously
Ask whether the problem affects one viewer or several viewers on different connections. A problem reported by one viewer may be on that viewer’s computer or connection. Reports from multiple viewers on different connections can point toward an encoder issue. Do not diagnose the cause from one report alone; use the reports alongside encoder and stream-health information.

Test before the next public stream
After changing a cable, port, bitrate, or other setting, run a test stream before the event. Use audio and on-screen movement similar to the real broadcast, then monitor stream health and messages while it runs. YouTube recommends testing under realistic conditions and checking the stream during the event in its encoder settings guidance.
Troubleshooting by symptom
| What you observe | What to try next |
|---|---|
| The computer’s wired link disconnects or the connection changes when the cable moves. | Reseat both ends, inspect for visible damage or loose clips, and test a known-good cable. If the link still fails, try another available router or switch port. |
| The computer stays connected, but the encoder or YouTube reports stream interruptions. | Check stream health and encoder errors; test outbound capacity under realistic network load and compare it with the total stream bitrate, including any backup stream. |
| The encoder preview looks and sounds healthy, but the outgoing stream has trouble. | Investigate outbound connectivity and shared network load. If testing identifies a connection problem, contact your ISP. |
| One viewer reports playback trouble. | Ask that viewer to check their device and connection; do not infer that the cable or encoder is at fault from one report. |
| Viewers on different connections report the same issue. | Review encoder errors and stream health as well as the network; multiple reports can indicate an encoder problem but do not prove one. |
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is to keep a pre-recorded YouTube channel live continuously, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos and streams to YouTube only; it does not broadcast from a camera. The cloud setup avoids relying on your local computer’s Ethernet cable for the ongoing stream, but it does not repair your home network or diagnose a live camera setup.
