Can YouTube Live Stream HEVC Files Through OBS, or Should You Convert Them?

You usually do not need to convert HEVC just to use a video in OBS. Check source playback separately from OBS’s outgoing encoder, YouTube protocol, bitrate, and HDR settings.

Usually, you do not need to convert an HEVC (H.265) file just because it is HEVC. OBS can use video files as media sources, while its outgoing stream encoder is configured separately. YouTube documents HEVC for both RTMP/RTMPS and HLS ingestion. Test playback and confirm that the OBS encoder and YouTube protocol are a supported combination before going live.

Why the file codec and stream codec are different questions

When you add a video in OBS, it is an input to a scene. OBS then encodes the outgoing stream using the encoder selected in its output settings. A HEVC source file therefore does not, by itself, mean that OBS sends the same compressed HEVC bitstream unchanged. OBS’s documentation describes media sources and output encoder selection separately; it does not establish HEVC passthrough.

Check two things independently: whether OBS can decode and play your file, and whether the configured outgoing encoder and YouTube ingestion protocol support the stream you intend to send.

What YouTube and OBS document

  • YouTube’s live encoder guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 for RTMP/RTMPS ingestion. Its separate HLS setup guidance also supports HEVC and lists OBS as an HLS-capable encoder. This is not a guarantee that every OBS build, hardware encoder, file profile, or stream-key configuration will work without adjustment. YouTube live encoder settings; Set up an HLS stream.
  • OBS Media Sources documentation lists MP4, TS, MOV, and MKV among supported video containers. Its formats guide lists HEVC in MP4, MOV, MKV, and TS. A supported container does not guarantee playback of every profile, bit depth, audio track, or damaged file. OBS Media Sources; OBS Audio/Video Formats Guide.
  • YouTube publishes different recommended bitrates by codec, resolution, and frame rate. At 1080p60, its current guidance recommends 12 Mbps for AV1/H.265 and 17 Mbps for H.264. Use the column for the codec you are actually sending, rather than carrying over a value from another codec. YouTube live encoder settings.

Test an HEVC file in OBS before converting it

  1. Add a representative clip: In OBS, add a Media Source to a scene and select a short section of the file. Confirm that both picture and audio play as expected. If the clip fails, check its container and source properties; container support alone does not prove that its profile, bit depth, or audio format is supported by your installed setup.
  2. Check decoding if playback stutters or fails: OBS offers hardware decoding for certain file types when the GPU has a suitable decoder. It is an optional source-playback aid, not a requirement for every file. Test a representative section rather than assuming it will solve every HEVC issue.
  3. Choose the YouTube ingestion protocol: YouTube documents HEVC with RTMP/RTMPS and HLS. Verify which protocol your YouTube stream configuration uses and that your OBS output supports it. Do not infer protocol compatibility solely from the file extension.
  4. Configure the outgoing OBS stream: Select a compatible streaming encoder, then set frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval for the outgoing codec and target. YouTube recommends CBR, a two-second keyframe interval (not over four seconds), and codec-specific bitrate guidance. Make a test stream and monitor YouTube’s stream health before an important broadcast.
  5. Run a full playback and stream test: Check audio/video sync, stability, and the YouTube preview. A clip that opens successfully in OBS does not alone verify the complete encode-and-ingest path.

When HLS makes sense—and what it changes

HLS is a documented HEVC option, but it brings segment configuration requirements and more latency than RTMP. YouTube says HLS has higher latency because it sends video segments instead of a continuous stream. For HLS, YouTube specifies TS segments of 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than five outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and no byte ranges. These details matter when configuring the output path; they are not settings that can be inferred from the HEVC file itself. YouTube HLS setup requirements.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

HDR requires a separate check

Do not apply SDR assumptions to an HDR live stream. YouTube’s HDR Live guidance supports HEVC and requires 10-bit video with compatible BT.2020 color primaries and matrix, plus PQ or HLG transfer characteristics. Its OBS HDR instructions describe a hardware HEVC encoder; for RTMPS, they require OBS 30.1 or later. Check YouTube’s current HDR procedure and your encoder hardware before configuring the stream. YouTube HDR live streaming.

Convert only when the test identifies a reason

Conversion can be a practical workaround if the installed OBS build cannot play the source reliably, or if your encoder and chosen YouTube protocol cannot produce a supported outgoing combination. It is not a general prerequisite for HEVC. If you do convert, decide on a target only after checking the source resolution, frame rate, dynamic range, audio, and intended stream settings; there is no one conversion preset established for every file.

  • If OBS cannot open the file, inspect its container and codec properties, try a representative segment, and check the OBS log before choosing a conversion.
  • If the file plays but YouTube does not receive a healthy stream, troubleshoot the outgoing encoder, protocol, keyframe interval, and bitrate first. Source-file conversion may not address an output-configuration problem.
  • If HDR is intended, preserve the required bit depth and color characteristics in the workflow; do not convert to an SDR target by default.

Troubleshooting common failures

Symptom What to check Practical next step
Media Source is blank or will not play Container, file integrity, codec profile, and whether the installed OBS build can decode the source. Test a short representative clip, review OBS source properties and logs, and consider conversion only if playback remains incompatible.
Video plays in OBS, but YouTube reports an unhealthy stream Outgoing encoder and ingestion protocol, plus the resolution/frame-rate-specific bitrate and keyframe interval. Use YouTube’s guidance for the codec actually being sent; test CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, not over four seconds.
HLS stream is delayed or rejected HLS segment and playlist requirements, HTTPS method, and the higher latency inherent in segmented delivery. Check TS segments are 1–4 seconds, the rolling playlist has no more than five outstanding segments, and the output uses HTTPS POST/PUT without byte ranges.
HDR looks wrong or fails to ingest 10-bit output, BT.2020 primaries and matrix, PQ or HLG transfer, hardware HEVC encoder, and current OBS/YouTube HDR procedure. Use YouTube’s dedicated HDR guidance rather than SDR bitrate or color assumptions.
