To test a YouTube stream key from an Ubuntu VPS, copy the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room, send a short feed to that endpoint, then confirm that YouTube shows a moving preview and healthy stream status. A successful network connection alone does not prove YouTube has accepted and decoded the video.
Before you start
Check that the channel can go live
YouTube’s general guidance says a channel must be verified and have had no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Check your channel’s eligibility in YouTube Studio, since account-specific status is what matters. YouTube live streaming tips
Prepare a controlled test
Use a private or unlisted stream if that suits your test, and confirm the privacy setting in Studio before sending video. A file-based test needs a playable video; check that it contains the picture and sound you intend to validate. For a production event, YouTube recommends testing with conditions that resemble the event, including audio and movement. YouTube streaming tips
Copy the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio

Open YouTube Studio and select Create > Go Live to open the Live Control Room.

Create or select the test stream, then open Stream settings.

Copy both the Stream URL and the Stream key. They are a matched pair: enter both in the encoder. YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” Treat the key as a secret; if it is exposed, reset it in Studio and update the encoder. Manage live stream settings

Prefer RTMPS. If Studio initially displays an RTMP URL, use its lock control to reveal and copy the RTMPS URL. Use the exact endpoint shown for your stream rather than an example endpoint copied from elsewhere. Encrypt your stream using RTMPS

Send a short test feed from Ubuntu
Use a video file with FFmpeg
If FFmpeg is installed on the VPS and its build supports the input and codecs below, a looping file can test the outbound encoder-to-YouTube path. This is an illustrative command pattern, not a tested command for a particular Ubuntu release, FFmpeg package, VPS provider, or India network route. Replace the placeholders with the exact URL and key from Studio, using the endpoint/key format expected by your encoder.

Match bitrate to the chosen resolution and frame rate and to the VPS’s measured, sustained outbound capacity. Avoid putting a real key in shell history, screenshots, process listings, or public logs. If other people can read a command or log containing the key, reset it in Studio.
Choose settings for the test you need
YouTube’s current encoder guidance lists the following H.264 values. They are YouTube guidance, not independent test results or guarantees; choose settings that your source, encoder, and VPS connection can sustain. Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions

The example’s 60-frame GOP at 30 fps corresponds to a two-second interval. If using a different frame rate, adjust the GOP to keep the intended interval. YouTube recommends leaving 20% headroom in upload bandwidth, so a stream’s total outgoing bitrate—including audio—should remain comfortably below the VPS’s sustained upload capacity. Check that the preview has moving video, and that audio is audible if audio is part of the test.

Observe the health information for a useful interval at the settings you intend to use. A brief preview verifies only that configuration over that period; it does not certify long-term VPS uptime or route quality.

When finished, stop FFmpeg and end the test stream in Studio. Confirm that the test’s privacy setting is appropriate before any later broadcast.
YouTube recommends testing before a live stream and monitoring stream health. Preview plus health status is a more meaningful acceptance check than a successful socket or TLS connection alone. Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions

Troubleshoot a missing preview or poor stream health

| Connection timeout | Re-copy the stream URL and key from the selected stream. Confirm that the encoder supports RTMPS, that the URL uses the RTMPS endpoint, and that the VPS or provider permits outbound traffic to the endpoint and port shown by YouTube. |
| SSL error | Re-copy the RTMPS URL from Live Control Room and verify the protocol and server. YouTube suggests specifying port 443 if an SSL error persists and the endpoint supports it. Encrypt your stream using RTMPS |

What the India VPS location does—and does not—tell you
The VPS being in India does not by itself establish a preferred YouTube ingest endpoint, guaranteed latency, or route quality. Use the URL shown in your own Live Control Room and assess the actual connection through YouTube’s preview and stream-health status. No particular Indian VPS provider or route is endorsed here.
