YouTube uses an encoder connected to the Live Control Room for live streams; its SFTP/Aspera delivery option is for eligible partners sending large volumes of media assets. To stream a video as a live broadcast, send the file through an encoder using your YouTube stream URL and key.
Why SFTP won’t start a YouTube live stream
YouTube documents SFTP or Aspera as a delivery method for partners who regularly send more than 100 assets per month. It transfers media and metadata; it is not the ingest method for a live encoder feed. Partner eligibility and onboarding for that asset-delivery workflow are not established for ordinary channels. See YouTube’s partner-delivery documentation for the applicable requirements.
A live broadcast instead comes from an encoder connected to YouTube with a stream URL and stream key. In this setup, the Mac runs encoder software that plays the local video and sends its audio and video as a live feed. SFTP software is not needed for that task.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel eligible to live stream. YouTube requires channel verification and no live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours. Check YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility instructions.
- A Mac with an encoder that can send a local media file as a live feed. The exact file-source, repeat, audio, and start/stop controls depend on the encoder; use its current macOS documentation for those steps.
- A stable internet connection with upload capacity for the selected stream settings. YouTube recommends keeping 20% bandwidth headroom; its live-streaming guidance explains the recommendation and encoder setup at YouTube Help.
- The stream URL and stream key shown for your event in YouTube Studio. Treat the key like a password: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a stream to your channel.
Set up the pre-recorded video as a live broadcast
- Confirm live access. Verify the channel and check that it has no live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days. If live streaming has not been enabled before, allow up to 24 hours for activation.
- Create or schedule the stream. In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create a stream or schedule one. Keep the Live Control Room available so you can check the incoming signal and preview.
- Configure the encoder destination. Copy the stream URL and key from the Live Control Room into the corresponding destination fields in your encoder. Use an RTMPS preset or URL if the encoder supports it. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP protected by TLS/SSL; never share the stream key.
- Load the video using the encoder’s documented file-playback feature. Select the recording, then check the encoder’s current instructions for audio routing, whether playback repeats, and how to start or stop playback. These controls vary by app, so there is no universal Mac menu path.
- Start the encoder and inspect the preview. Confirm that YouTube receives the expected picture and audio, that the correct event is selected, and that stream health is acceptable before going live. For a scheduled stream, YouTube’s workflow is to start the encoder, wait for the preview, and then select Go live in the Live Control Room.
- Monitor the broadcast. Keep the Mac, encoder, and network running while the feed is being sent. YouTube recommends preparing the encoder at least two hours before an event and starting it at least 15 minutes before; use that time to catch connection, audio, or playback problems.
- End the stream deliberately. Stop the broadcast using the encoder and Live Control Room according to the configured workflow. YouTube says streams shorter than 12 hours are automatically archived.
Choose and test the encoder’s playback behavior
YouTube’s encoder instructions establish how to send a live feed, but they do not provide verified click-by-click instructions for loading and looping a local file in a particular Mac app. Check the encoder maker’s current documentation for local-file playback, repeat/loop behavior, audio handling, and scheduled start and stop. Do not assume that importing a video into an editor or uploading it to YouTube creates a live broadcast.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
If you need a scheduled pre-recorded playback feature without relying on a Mac software workflow, YouTube lists AJA HELO Plus PlayToStream as an optional hardware encoder with scheduled playback capabilities. It is one possible hardware route, not a requirement for streaming a file from a Mac.
Prepare the stream and protect the channel
Keep the stream key private
The key authorizes an encoder to publish to the channel. Copy it only into the intended encoder, do not post it in messages or screenshots, and replace it through the Live Control Room if it is exposed. Prefer RTMPS when your encoder supports it for an encrypted connection.

Check the whole signal, not just the video file
- Watch the YouTube preview and listen for audio before going live.
- Confirm the encoder is playing the intended file and that any repeat setting behaves as you expect.
- Check the scheduled event and its watch page so you do not send the feed to the wrong stream.
- Leave the recommended 20% upload-bandwidth headroom and avoid relying on a connection that is already near capacity.
- Review the video and audio rights before broadcasting. A file being pre-recorded does not grant permission to use copyrighted material, and a live format does not bypass YouTube’s policies on copyright or monetization.
Common problems and fixes
The encoder connects, but YouTube shows no preview
Check that the stream URL and key were copied from the correct event, that the key has not been changed, and that the encoder is actively sending. Confirm the channel can live stream and allow for the first-time activation window where applicable.
The video appears, but there is no sound
Check the selected file’s audio track and the encoder’s documented audio source and output settings. Monitor the YouTube preview with sound before selecting Go live.

The recording stops instead of repeating
Looping is controlled by the encoder’s media playback feature, not by SFTP or YouTube’s live ingest. Check that encoder’s repeat setting and test the end of the file before the event.
The stream drops or becomes unstable
Check the encoder’s stream-health status and available upload bandwidth. Reduce congestion or choose settings the connection can sustain, while preserving YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom. Start testing early rather than troubleshooting after the scheduled start.

You can’t find SFTP settings in YouTube Studio
That is expected for a normal live-stream setup: SFTP/Aspera is a partner asset-delivery path, not the live encoder connection. For a live broadcast, use the Live Control Room’s stream URL and key.
