First check whether the exact YouTube ingest hostname resolves from the same environment that runs your encoder. A DNS lookup failure happens before TCP, TLS, RTMPS, or stream-key validation, so do not start by changing the firewall or replacing the key. If the name resolves, move on to YouTube’s RTMPS requirements: the correct ingest URL, port 443, TLS, and SNI set to the ingest hostname.
1. Confirm the ingest URL YouTube gave this stream
In YouTube Live Control Room, open the stream’s settings and copy its RTMPS URL. YouTube may show the ordinary RTMP URL by default; use the stream settings to reveal and copy the RTMPS address. Check that your encoder has the complete URL in the right field and that the server URL, application path, and stream key have not been mixed together. See YouTube’s instructions for setting up a live stream encoder.
If your encoder obtains ingest details through the YouTube Live API, use the values returned in the liveStream resource’s cdn.ingestionInfo: rtmpsIngestionAddress for the primary RTMPS address and, if using a backup destination, rtmpsBackupIngestionAddress. Do not substitute a guessed hostname for the address returned for the stream. See the YouTube Live Streaming API liveStreams resource.
2. Test DNS from the encoder’s runtime
Take only the hostname from the current ingest URL and test that name through the runtime’s ordinary resolver. Do not query the full URL, application path, or stream key as if it were a hostname. If the encoder runs in a container, service namespace, or other isolated runtime, run the lookup there too: a successful lookup on the host does not prove that the encoder sees the same DNS configuration.

Compare the normal lookup with a query to a configured DNS server directly if your platform’s tools allow it. This helps distinguish a problem with the machine’s resolver configuration from failure to reach or receive a response from a particular DNS server. Choose commands appropriate to the Linux distribution and resolver installed; there is no universal command set for every cloud image.
3. If the hostname does not resolve
Identify the active resolver and network manager
On Linux, DNS settings can be system-wide or attached to a particular interface. They may be managed by systemd-resolved, NetworkManager, or another network configuration service. Find the active service, DNS servers, and interface before changing anything. On a systemd-resolved host, inspect its current DNS state and per-link settings; its reported errors can distinguish conditions such as having no suitable name server, an invalid reply, DNSSEC validation trouble, or a network-down state. NetworkManager may manage resolver configuration itself or pass DNS settings to systemd-resolved.

Check resolver-file ownership before editing
Inspect /etc/resolv.conf and where it points before editing it. On some systems it is a managed symlink, and a network service may overwrite manual changes. Correct the DNS server or interface through the service that actually owns the configuration, then repeat the hostname lookup from the encoder’s runtime. For background on resolver configuration, consult the systemd-resolved documentation and NetworkManager configuration documentation.
Do not make a fixed IP the default workaround
Use the hostname in YouTube’s current ingest URL rather than hard-coding an IP address. YouTube specifies hostname-based endpoints and requires the server hostname in TLS SNI; an IP can become stale and can interfere with hostname-based TLS authentication. Fix name resolution for the configured endpoint instead.

4. If DNS works, diagnose the next connection layer
Once the hostname resolves, check reachability and encoder configuration in sequence. YouTube’s RTMPS requirements are a valid RTMPS endpoint, port 443, TLS, and SNI containing the ingest server’s hostname. The official YouTube RTMPS ingestion guide explains the SNI requirement: “So make sure you add the SNI extension (Server Name Indication) to your SSL handshake, and set the server name to the server hostname you’re connecting to.”
- If the encoder times out after DNS succeeds, check that it uses the exact
rtmps://address and port 443, and that it supports RTMPS. Cleartext RTMP sent to a server expecting RTMPS can time out. - If the connection reports a certificate or SSL error, verify that the URL, port, TLS mode, and SNI hostname all refer to the same RTMPS endpoint. YouTube notes that an invalid-certificate error can indicate the wrong RTMP/RTMPS server or port.
- If the ingest connection succeeds but YouTube rejects the stream, then check the application path and stream key. A key cannot explain a hostname lookup failure because key validation occurs only after the ingest endpoint is reached.
YouTube’s practical encoder guidance also recommends checking that both the protocol and server use RTMPS, specifying port 443 if needed, and confirming RTMPS support when a connection times out. See YouTube Help.

5. Follow the failure layer, not the symptom wording
| Check | If it fails | What to check next |
|---|---|---|
| Hostname resolution in the encoder’s runtime | The endpoint name cannot be resolved. | Resolver settings, active interface, network manager, container DNS, and DNS-server reachability. |
| TCP reachability to the configured endpoint and port | The name resolves but the endpoint cannot be reached. | Network route, cloud or host network policy, and the configured RTMPS port 443. |
| TLS certificate and SNI | The connection reaches the endpoint but TLS fails. | RTMPS URL, port, TLS support, certificate validation, and SNI hostname. |
| RTMPS encoder configuration | The connection times out or the encoder cannot establish RTMPS. | Encoder RTMPS support and the exact YouTube server address and protocol. |
| Application path and stream key | The endpoint connection succeeds but the stream is rejected. | Correct stream settings and credentials in the encoder. |
6. What the error does—and does not—establish
“DNS lookup failed,” “could not resolve host,” and “failed to connect to server” are starting symptoms, not proof of a YouTube ingest outage. The wording alone does not identify whether the cause is a mistyped or outdated URL, host resolver trouble, container-specific DNS, upstream DNS reachability, or a cloud/network policy. Check the hostname and resolver output in the environment running the encoder before attributing the fault to a provider or YouTube.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you would rather not maintain a streaming server for a recurring prerecorded YouTube stream, StreamNeo runs uploaded videos and playlists from the cloud; it does not stream from a camera. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. Every slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
