In current datarhei Restreamer, add YouTube under Publication Service, enter your YouTube streaming ID (the stream key), save, and start the publication. You need a configured video source and an active YouTube account. When Restreamer connects, it displays the live stream’s bitrate in its main window. See the Restreamer YouTube guide for its documented workflow.
Before you add the stream key
- Configure a video source in Restreamer. The publication service sends that source’s output to YouTube; it does not create a video source for you. Restreamer’s Quick Start covers adding a source and optionally setting up audio.
- Make sure you can publish from the YouTube account. Restreamer requires an active account on the external service. For YouTube’s current encoder and live-stream controls, use YouTube’s help for creating a live stream with an encoder. The exact screen labels and account requirements can change, so follow the controls shown in your account.
- Keep the key private. Treat the streaming ID as a credential. Do not post it in examples, screenshots, public documentation, or messages. If you need to show the format, use
[YOUR_YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY], not a real key.
Add the YouTube stream key in Restreamer
- Open Publication Service. In the current Restreamer interface, select Publication Service to configure where the selected source is sent.
- Select YouTube. Choose YouTube as the publication destination.
- Enter the streaming ID. Paste the valid streaming ID from YouTube into the requested field. Check that you copied the intended key without extra spaces or missing characters.
- Save the publication. Save the YouTube destination settings before starting it.
- Start and verify. Start the YouTube publication. Once connected, the bitrate appears in Restreamer’s main window, according to its YouTube guide. Confirm the stream is also visible in YouTube’s live controls.
If the publication will not connect
Open the publication process details and logs in Restreamer to inspect the connection. The documentation points readers to these diagnostics but does not identify one universal cause for a failed connection.
- Check the credential: compare the saved streaming ID with the one shown in YouTube’s encoder controls. If uncertain, copy it again and save the publication.
- Check the YouTube setup: verify that the correct account and live-stream setup are available in YouTube. This is a practical check, not a diagnosis that applies to every error.
- Check the source and publication state: ensure the source is configured and the YouTube publication was saved and started.
- Use the logs for the specific failure: consult the process details rather than assuming the stream key is the cause.
Do you need router port forwarding?
Not automatically for publishing outbound from Restreamer to YouTube. The project repository notes that port forwarding may be needed for external access to the Restreamer service; that does not mean every YouTube publication needs an inbound router rule. Only configure forwarding if you need external access or your particular network setup requires it. Restreamer documents Docker deployment for AMD64 and ARM systems, as well as a Raspberry Pi-oriented image, so a compatible existing home server or ARM board can be a host. End the event in YouTube
If preserving the DVR archive matters, end the stream on YouTube before interrupting it in Restreamer. Restreamer’s guide warns that stopping the publication in Restreamer during a live event may prevent YouTube from saving the DVR archive and says: “Always end the stream on YouTube first after an event.”

Is your Restreamer screen showing an older interface?
The current instructions use Publication Service and a YouTube streaming ID. A separate Restreamer 0.6.x guide describes an External Streaming-Server checkbox, RTMP selection, and an RTMP URL field, but that guide is explicitly deprecated. Do not mix those legacy menu steps with the current workflow; the archived page is available at YouTube – Restreamer (version 0.6.x, deprecated).
