Docker, FFmpeg, and YouTube do not share one universal environment-variable name for a stream key. Get the current RTMPS ingestion URL and stream key from YouTube Live Control Room, then pass them into the container using the variable names your image or startup script expects. The script must actually use those values to build FFmpeg’s output destination.
How the stream key reaches FFmpeg
YouTube provides the stream key and ingestion URL; it does not prescribe a Docker variable such as YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY. Docker passes environment values to a container, but an image entrypoint, wrapper script, or Compose command has to read those values and assemble the FFmpeg destination. A variable declaration alone does not start a stream.
- In YouTube Live Control Room, select the stream you intend to use and copy its current stream key and RTMPS URL. YouTube’s instructions direct encoders to retrieve these details in Live Control Room: Encrypt your stream using RTMPS.
- Check the chosen container image’s documentation or startup script to learn which variable names it reads and whether it expects the key separately from the server URL.
- Provide the values to the container through a private runtime configuration method, then ensure the entrypoint passes them to FFmpeg in the format that image expects.
- Start the container and verify the connection and stream health in Live Control Room. A successful connection does not guarantee that video and audio settings are healthy.
Choose the destination format your image expects
The YouTube Live Streaming API represents ingestion URL and stream name as separate fields. Depending on the encoder, they may be entered separately or combined as STREAM_URL/STREAM_NAME. For RTMPS, use the RTMPS-specific ingestion address. Match the format to the FFmpeg command or image interface; do not append the key twice. See the YouTube LiveStreams API reference.
Use a schematic mapping rather than assuming a particular variable is built in:

YOUTUBE_STREAM_KEY=<private current stream key>Those names are examples only. Your image may require different names, or a wrapper script may need to combine the values before invoking FFmpeg. Likewise, the destination may need to be the URL alone, the key alone, or a combined URL and key, depending on how the image constructs its output argument. Inspect the actual entrypoint and documentation before adapting the pattern.
Keep the credential private
Treat the stream key as a credential: do not commit a working key in a Compose file, publish it in an example, or print it in startup logs. Prefer an appropriate private secret-injection mechanism for your deployment. The exact mechanism varies by platform; environment-variable names and secret handling are deployment choices, not YouTube requirements.

RTMPS or RTMP?

YouTube notes that an RTMP URL may appear by default in Live Control Room, so deliberately select and copy the RTMPS address when you want encrypted transport. Endpoint and key values can change with stream configuration; use the current values shown for your stream rather than relying on a hard-coded URL.
Check the stream after connecting
A container can connect while YouTube reports a configuration or health issue. If you use the API, the LiveStreams resource exposes status and health information. Documented issue categories include low or high bitrate, frame-rate mismatch, audio codec or sample-rate problems, missing audio, and absent video. Use the reported issue to check the encoder output and stream settings rather than assuming every warning is a key problem.

Troubleshooting Docker-to-YouTube failures
- FFmpeg reports an empty or malformed output URL: Confirm that the container received the expected variables and that the entrypoint consumes them. Check whether the image expects separate URL/key inputs or one combined destination.
- The key is rejected or the stream connects to the wrong broadcast: Copy the current key and ingestion URL for the intended stream from Live Control Room. Confirm the script has not appended the key twice or paired it with a different URL.
- TLS or certificate error: Verify that the destination uses the
rtmpsscheme, the correct hostname and application path, and port 443. SNI hostname handling matters. Google notes that an invalid-certificate error can occur when a client reaches a server expecting RTMP or uses the wrong port; incorrect SNI can also cause SSL errors. - Connection timeout: Confirm the URL and port, network access from the container, and that the encoder supports RTMPS. YouTube recommends checking encoder RTMPS support when troubleshooting timeouts.
- Connected, but stream health is poor: Review Live Control Room or API health details for bitrate, frame rate, audio codec, sample rate, and missing audio or video. A stream key authenticates the destination; it does not correct encoder settings.

Using FFmpeg in Docker does not change the rights or platform rules that apply to the material you broadcast. Before streaming a documentary, soundtrack, or other recorded program, confirm that you have the necessary rights and that the content complies with YouTube’s live-streaming policies. Keep this separate from transport troubleshooting: a valid key and working RTMPS connection do not establish permission to stream the video.
