You can install OBS Studio on an Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) Ubuntu Server with OBS Project’s Ubuntu package instructions, but installation alone does not make OBS a supported headless service. OBS lists Linux graphics requirements, and its official documentation does not provide a verified OBS-specific recipe for running without a display server. Treat any no-desktop setup as experimental: confirm the Ubuntu and OBS versions, graphics stack, scene sources, and encoding workload before relying on it.
Before you install: check the Ubuntu and OBS versions
OBS Project’s Ubuntu installation route uses its OBS Studio PPA. However, compatibility depends on the Ubuntu image and OBS release you choose. In an announcement dated June 19, 2026, OBS Project said OBS Studio 33 would no longer support Ubuntu 24.04 and encouraged Ubuntu 24.04 users who want new major or minor releases to upgrade to Ubuntu 26.04 or later, or switch to Flatpak. Check the current OBS release and the OCI image’s Ubuntu version before adding the PPA; the commands below should not be taken as proof that every Ubuntu release supports every OBS version.
OBS Project lists OpenGL 3.3 or later as a Linux requirement and recommends X server 1.18.4 or newer to avoid possible performance issues with some features. A minimal Ubuntu Server image does not necessarily include a graphical display stack. The package can install successfully even if OBS cannot run in the environment you intend to use.
Install OBS Studio from the Ubuntu PPA
Connect to the OCI instance over SSH as the Ubuntu image user, then run the OBS Project commands:

sudo apt install obs-studioThese commands install the package from the PPA. They do not create a desktop, configure a display server, or demonstrate that OBS will run unattended on the instance. If the PPA or package is unavailable for the selected Ubuntu release, stop and verify the current OBS installation guidance and release compatibility rather than forcing a package from a different Ubuntu version.
Choose how to see or automate OBS
There are two documented mechanisms that may be relevant, but neither establishes a supported headless OBS configuration. X11 forwarding can display a remote graphical application on a local X11-compatible client. OBS launch parameters can select saved configuration and start streaming or recording. They solve different problems; neither removes the need to establish that the graphics environment works.

Option 1: use X11 forwarding for remote GUI access
Oracle’s SSH documentation describes X11 forwarding as a way to show a remote graphical application on a local X11-compatible client without setting up a full remote desktop environment. It is generic SSH guidance, not an OBS-on-Ubuntu procedure. Your local computer needs an X11-compatible service, and the remote OBS installation still needs a working graphics stack. Do not assume that forwarding will make a minimal OCI image satisfy OBS’s graphics requirements.
Option 2: use OBS launch parameters with a saved configuration
OBS documents launch parameters including --startstreaming, --startrecording, --collection, --profile, and --scene. For example, after establishing a working OBS environment and saving the relevant configuration, you can use those documented flags to select a collection, profile, or scene and request streaming or recording. Consult the OBS launch-parameter documentation for the exact syntax and values for your configuration.

These flags automate actions in OBS; OBS does not describe them as a no-display mode. Do not treat a command that launches OBS with --startstreaming as evidence that a server without a display server will stream reliably.
Validate the setup before relying on it
No source cited here establishes performance or sustained streaming results for a particular OCI shape, OBS build, or media workload. Validate the actual combination you plan to run. Scene sources that depend on audio devices, cameras, capture hardware, or graphical rendering may behave differently on a cloud server than on a desktop. Hardware encoding availability and capacity also depend on the selected OCI shape and workload; no specific instance capability or bitrate is established here.

- Confirm the Ubuntu image version and OBS build are compatible, especially if using Ubuntu 24.04 with OBS 33-era releases.
- Check that the graphics stack meets OBS’s stated Linux requirements; package installation does not confirm this.
- Test every scene source, audio path, and encoder used in the intended stream or recording.
- Run a sustained test under the intended workload and check for interruptions, rendering problems, and resource limits before treating the setup as unattended.
Manage OCI access and firewall settings safely
OCI access is controlled at more than one layer. Oracle says to check the instance’s network security groups, subnet security lists, and host firewall. OCI platform images default to SSH-only access; the Ubuntu image user is ubuntu, has sudo privileges, and root login is disabled. If you cannot connect, verify the cloud-side rules as well as the instance’s SSH and firewall configuration.
Oracle cautions that changing UFW settings on OCI Ubuntu images can prevent a reboot unless its documented workaround is followed. Do not enable or alter UFW casually on a production instance; consult Oracle’s Ubuntu platform-image guidance and preserve SSH access before changing firewall rules. If the instance has no public IP, Canonical documents using Oracle’s bastion feature for access, subject to private-networking and gateway prerequisites: Ubuntu on Oracle: use a bastion to access a VM.

Troubleshoot common installation and operation problems
- The package installs, but OBS will not start or render correctly: installation does not establish a usable display server. Check the OpenGL and X server requirements, then validate the graphics stack and chosen access method.
- The PPA package is unavailable or incompatible: verify the Ubuntu image version and current OBS release guidance. OBS Project’s June 19, 2026 announcement says OBS Studio 33 no longer supports Ubuntu 24.04; it recommends Ubuntu 26.04 or later, or Flatpak, for users seeking new major or minor releases.
- X11 forwarding shows no window: confirm that the local client has an X11-compatible service and that SSH forwarding is configured. Oracle’s reference covers Oracle Linux SSH and is not an OBS-specific Ubuntu validation.
- A launch flag starts OBS but streaming or recording fails: launch parameters request actions and select saved configuration; they do not resolve graphics, scene-source, encoder, or network issues. Test those components independently.
- SSH access breaks after a firewall change: review OCI network security groups and subnet security lists as well as the host firewall. Follow Oracle’s OCI Ubuntu guidance before changing UFW, since an incorrect configuration can prevent reboot.
