Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The monthly electricity cost depends on the Wyse model’s average power draw at the wall while streaming and your electricity tariff. For a 30-day month, calculate it as average watts Ă— 720 Ă· 1,000 Ă— price per kWh. At the U.S. 2025 residential average of 17.30 cents/kWh, each continuously used watt costs about $0.1246 per month. Dell’s 3.3 W idle figure for the Wyse 3040 would therefore equal about $0.41 for 30 days if that were its actual average wall draw while streaming—but Dell reports it as idle, not as a YouTube playback measurement.
Calculate your Wyse’s monthly electricity cost
Use these two steps:
- Monthly energy in kWh = average power draw in watts Ă— hours used per day Ă— days in the billing period Ă· 1,000.
- Monthly electricity cost = monthly energy in kWh Ă— your electricity price per kWh.
For a continuously running stream over 30 days, the machine is on for 720 hours, so the formula becomes watts Ă— 720 Ă· 1,000 Ă— price per kWh. Use the all-in rate from your bill where possible; taxes, time-of-use rates, or other tariff details can change the result.
Illustration using Dell’s Wyse 3040 idle figure
Dell Technologies says the Wyse 3040 consumes 3.3 W in an idle state. If—and only if—that were the system’s true average wall draw during the stream, 3.3 × 720 ÷ 1,000 gives 2.376 kWh for 30 days. At the U.S. 2025 residential average of 17.30 cents/kWh, that is approximately $0.41. The EIA identifies its 2025 values as preliminary. This is an illustration of the arithmetic, not a measured streaming cost or a prediction for every Wyse 3040 setup.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Why the exact Wyse model and workload matter
“Dell Wyse” refers to different thin clients and configurations, not one fixed power draw. The available Dell figures are not a controlled comparison of models running the same YouTube stream, so they cannot establish a typical streaming cost across the range.
Idle power is not streaming power
An idle specification is useful as a reference, but video playback can produce a different average draw. The 3.3 W figure is specifically for the Wyse 3040 at idle; it is not a playback test. To estimate your own cost accurately, measure the complete system’s average wall draw while it runs the intended stream.

Annual energy figures use defined assumptions
Dell’s Wyse 5070 PCF datasheet lists 41.84 kWh of yearly energy demand under its stated assumptions, including a two-year product lifetime and EU use location. Dell does not state the year in the available datasheet excerpt. Treat this as a modeled yearly energy-demand figure, not a 24/7 YouTube benchmark or a direct substitute for measuring your own setup.

Measure the draw and use your own electricity rate
- Connect the Wyse and any equipment you want included—such as a display—to an optional plug-in electricity meter.
- Run the setup in its normal streaming configuration and observe its wall draw over a representative period. A brief reading may miss changes in playback or device activity; use an average that reflects the intended use.
- Multiply the measured average watts by the hours per day and days in your billing period, then divide by 1,000 to get kWh.
- Multiply those kWh by your applicable price per kWh. If your tariff varies by time, use the relevant rates and hours rather than one national average.
Decide what the estimate includes. A meter on the Wyse alone will not include a separate display, speakers, network equipment, internet charges, or paid services. Include or exclude each item consistently when comparing estimates.

Do not mistake the power adapter rating for consumption
Dell lists a 130 W AC adapter for the Wyse 5070 Extended. That is the adapter’s rated capacity, not evidence that the computer continuously draws 130 W. Multiplying 130 W by 720 hours would calculate a hypothetical full-rated-load scenario, not the Wyse’s measured monthly use.

What the electricity estimate does—and does not—cover
The calculation estimates electricity for the devices whose draw you measure. It does not establish the total cost of keeping a YouTube stream live: internet service, other equipment, and any streaming service are separate costs. For a meaningful comparison, use the exact Wyse model and configuration, measured average wall draw under the intended workload, local electricity tariff, and a clearly defined list of included equipment.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep uploaded video playing as a YouTube live stream, StreamNeo is a cloud alternative to leaving a Wyse running. Upload your recording or make a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; uploads stream as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot. StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly: $9.99 per month. StreamNeo streams uploaded videos to YouTube; it does not go live from a camera. Start a free day with StreamNeo.
