Compare timestamped FFmpeg stderr with YouTube Live Control Room’s stream-health status, then check the RTMPS URL and TLS setup, OCI and Ubuntu network controls, connection-tracking metrics, and sustained upload capacity. Without your command, logs, and OCI configuration, there is no basis to identify one cause in advance.
Start by identifying what actually disconnects
A visible interruption can originate at different points in the chain: the media input, FFmpeg’s encoder or process, the outbound network path, YouTube ingestion, or the health of the feed YouTube receives. A restart may mask the symptom without identifying which part failed.
Capture evidence before changing settings
- Record the exact FFmpeg command, but redact the stream key and any URL component that contains it. Never publish the key in logs, screenshots, or support requests.
- Record the installed FFmpeg version and build configuration, the input type, and the VM’s relevant configuration.
- Save the complete stderr output around the interruption with UTC timestamps. Note whether FFmpeg exits, remains alive, or stops producing output.
- At the same times, check YouTube Live Control Room for stream status and health warnings. YouTube’s live-streaming troubleshooting guidance recommends monitoring stream health and testing with representative audio and motion before the event.
These observations help distinguish an input stall, encoder or CPU overload, network write error, TLS or ingest configuration problem, and a feed that remains connected but is unhealthy. They are possibilities to investigate, not a diagnosis of your VM.
Verify the YouTube ingest URL and RTMPS settings
Use the ingest URL shown in YouTube Live Control Room rather than guessing a hostname or reusing an RTMP-only address. YouTube notes that the ordinary RTMP address may appear by default; reveal and copy the RTMPS URL if that is the protocol you intend to use. If your FFmpeg workflow takes the server address and stream key separately, combine them only in the format that workflow expects. Keep the key private.

RTMPS is RTMP over TLS. Google’s RTMPS ingestion guidance specifies an SSL/TLS connection to port 443 and explains that the destination hostname is required for server authentication through SNI. A wrong protocol, port, hostname, or TLS/SNI setup can present as a certificate error, connection timeout, or failed ingest. Google also notes that a timeout after reaching a YouTube server can occur when cleartext RTMP is sent to an endpoint expecting RTMPS.
What to check in FFmpeg
- Confirm the output URL uses the protocol and address copied from YouTube, including the correct port where shown.
- Check that the stream key or path is included in the way your command and YouTube’s displayed URL require.
- For TLS errors, verify the hostname is preserved so SNI can be used; do not replace it with an IP address as a test unless you understand the TLS consequences.
- Confirm that the installed FFmpeg build supports the protocol and options your command uses. The FFmpeg protocol documentation describes RTMPS as RTMP over a secure SSL connection, but exact behavior depends on the installed build and invocation.
Check each network-control layer in OCI and Ubuntu
Allowing traffic in one place does not establish that the full outbound path works. Oracle’s VCN troubleshooting guidance identifies three controls to inspect: network security groups attached to the instance’s VNIC, security lists attached to the subnet, and the guest operating system’s firewall.
- OCI network security groups: Inspect the rules attached to the VM’s VNIC and verify that the outbound connection to the selected YouTube RTMPS endpoint on TCP port 443 is permitted under your policy.
- Subnet security lists: Check the security lists associated with the VM’s subnet. Confirm the configured policies allow the outbound connection and required stateful response traffic.
- Ubuntu firewall: Inspect the guest firewall separately. A permissive OCI rule cannot override a guest rule that blocks the connection.
- Routes and actual destination: Confirm the VM’s route table and rules support the intended outbound path. The exact rule depends on your VCN, subnet, NSGs, route table, and guest firewall.
This is an outbound publishing workload, so do not blindly apply an inbound port-opening recipe. Follow the applicable OCI rules for the VM’s configuration and the endpoint YouTube supplied.

Use connection-tracking metrics for intermittent failures
If the stream drops intermittently, inspect the connection-tracking metrics for the attached VNIC and correlate them with the exact disconnect times. Oracle reports ingress and egress packets dropped because of a full connection-tracking table, as well as connection-tracking utilization. Oracle’s guidance says any nonzero full-table dropped-packet count indicates the table is full; 100% utilization also indicates it is full. A metric that overlaps the incident is useful evidence to investigate, not proof by itself that it caused the disconnect.

Compare the stream bitrate with sustained upload capacity
YouTube recommends choosing quality that is reliable for the available connection and measuring upload bitrate. Its current encoder-settings guidance lists these H.264 examples; they are YouTube recommendations, not evidence that a particular OCI route can sustain them:

Record the codec, resolution, frame rate, configured bitrate, and a sustained outbound-capacity measurement from the VM’s actual route. A short speed test or peak figure alone does not demonstrate that the path can continuously carry the configured stream. YouTube’s settings differ for AV1 and H.265, so do not apply the H.264 figures to those codecs.

Check rate control, keyframes, and audio
YouTube’s settings support RTMP/RTMPS, H.264/H.265/AV1, frame rates up to 60 fps, CBR, AAC or MP3 audio, and 44.1 kHz stereo audio. The recommended keyframe interval is two seconds and should not exceed four seconds. Compare the settings in your FFmpeg command with YouTube’s current guidance and the codec you are actually sending.
As a diagnostic, try a temporary lower-bitrate stream if the observed rate approaches the measured sustained capacity. If that test is stable, it suggests capacity may be involved; it does not establish the root cause, since other settings or conditions may also have changed.

Decide how FFmpeg should recover—and test it safely
Do not assume a reconnect option resumes a YouTube stream at precisely the interrupted media position. Recovery depends on the installed FFmpeg version, protocol and muxer path, input source, and process-management design. The FFmpeg documentation describes protocol behavior, but does not establish a version-independent guarantee or a universal YouTube resume command.

- Check the installed binary’s local help and documentation for the options it supports.
- Reproduce a controlled interruption with the real input and endpoint, keeping the stream key private.
- Capture logs and observe whether the process reconnects, exits, stalls, or starts sending a new feed.
- If a service manager or wrapper restarts FFmpeg, verify that it does not create duplicate streams, restart in a rapid loop, or suppress the original error.
- Validate recovery on the actual setup before relying on it for a scheduled broadcast.
