An old Android TV box may be able to play video, but YouTube’s published guidance does not establish that a TV box can capture its own playback, encode it and broadcast it as a continuous YouTube Live stream. Treat the box as a possible playback source—not a proven standalone encoder. For a dependable, documented route, send a lawful, compatible source through a separate computer or hardware encoder configured with your YouTube stream key.
What the Android TV box can—and cannot—be assumed to do
YouTube documents live broadcasts made with a webcam, mobile device or encoder. Its encoder workflow uses streaming software or hardware to accept a production feed and send it to YouTube. Google’s Android live-streaming documentation describes a camera-and-microphone broadcast from a mobile device; it does not establish that an Android TV box can capture app playback, encode it continuously or transmit a stream key.
In other words, being able to play YouTube or other video on the box does not mean it can originate a live stream. Capability depends on the exact box, operating system, apps, video source and output restrictions. The cited platform documentation does not verify any particular model’s capture support, sustained encoding performance or reliability.
Choose a streaming architecture
Try the box alone only if it has a supported broadcast path
Check the exact model and software for a supported app or system feature that can encode the intended feed and send it to YouTube Live. Confirm it can accept the stream key, maintain the broadcast, and recover or restart after interruption. Do not assume a TV-oriented YouTube app or a mobile broadcasting feature provides these capabilities.

Use the box as a source for a separate encoder
If the box outputs material that you have the right to capture and rebroadcast, a possible arrangement is:
- Connect the box’s video output to compatible capture hardware.
- Connect that hardware to a computer or standalone encoder capable of streaming to YouTube.
- Configure the encoder with YouTube’s server URL and stream key, then start the feed and manage it in YouTube Live Control Room.
This is an architecture to verify, not a tested guarantee. Capture compatibility and output protection depend on the source and devices. A capture card does not replace the encoder, bypass protected-output restrictions or grant permission to rebroadcast what is playing.

Use prerecorded files without a TV box as the source
If your goal is to run a continuous stream from videos you own or are licensed to use, an encoder can send a prepared video feed without using the TV box as its source. YouTube’s encoder guide also names Gyre as a cloud-based option for continuous streams of prerecorded videos. Check current service details and suitability directly; that listing does not establish compatibility with an Android TV box.
Set up YouTube Live before building the loop
- Enable live streaming and check eligibility. YouTube says the channel must be verified, must not have live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days, and the person streaming must be at least 16. First-time live-stream enablement may take up to 24 hours, so do not leave activation until launch day. See Get started with live streaming.
- Create the live stream in YouTube Studio. In Live Control Room, create or schedule the stream and select the encoder workflow. YouTube provides a server URL and stream key for the encoder. Treat the key like a password: enter it only in the encoder you control, and reset it if it is exposed.
- Configure the encoder. Enter YouTube’s server URL and stream key, select the intended video and audio feed, then start sending from the encoder. YouTube’s instructions describe monitoring and managing the feed in Live Control Room; follow the current interface and encoder-specific settings rather than guessing at settings for an unidentified box.
- Test the whole chain. Confirm that the encoder receives the intended picture and sound, that Live Control Room reports the stream as healthy, and that playback works on the watch page. Test interruption and restart behavior before depending on the setup for unattended operation.
YouTube’s encoder guidance explains the URL/key workflow, but the available platform material does not specify settings for your unknown TV-box model, capture card or encoder. Use the encoder’s documented settings and YouTube’s current recommendations for the actual output format rather than treating any generic bitrate or resolution as universally correct. Plan the children’s audience setting and monetization realistically
Set Made for Kids according to the content
The creator is responsible for selecting the correct audience setting. If the material is directed to children, it must be marked Made for Kids—even when children are not the only or primary audience. Make the decision based on the content and intended audience, not on whether it is streamed from a TV box. YouTube explains the setting in Set your channel or video’s audience.
Expect reduced audience and advertising features
YouTube disables features on Made for Kids streams including live chat, comments, notifications, personalized advertising, Super Chat and Super Stickers. Contextual ads may still be shown, but YouTube says personalized ads are not served on kids content. Do not build a revenue forecast on the assumption that a children’s stream receives normal personalized-ad revenue. See YouTube’s audience guidance and live-stream restrictions.

A simple loop does not guarantee monetization
YouTube’s monetization policy, updated July 15, 2025, calls repetitive or mass-produced material “inauthentic content” and applies its video policies to live streams. A continuous loop risks failing monetization review; that does not mean every continuous stream is automatically prohibited. Originality and substantive variation matter. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not represent a 24-hour feed as one reliably archived 24-hour replay. If replay access matters, plan separate recordings or shorter broadcasts and verify the archive behavior in your own channel. YouTube also warns that a live stream matching another copyrighted live broadcast can trigger restrictions. If children appear on camera, YouTube says streams with minors under 16 who are not visibly accompanied by an adult may be removed or have live chat disabled. Troubleshoot before leaving a stream unattended
- The box plays video, but YouTube receives no live feed: playback is not broadcasting. Check that a supported encoder is receiving a capture feed and that its YouTube server URL and stream key are correct.
- The capture device shows a blank or unusable picture: confirm the box output, capture device and source are compatible. Some sources may restrict capture; the available guidance does not establish a workaround or model-specific fix.
- YouTube Live is not available yet: check verification, live-stream restrictions and the age requirement. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours.
- The stream stops after an interruption: check the encoder’s connection and restart/recovery behavior. Test this before relying on the setup; uninterrupted operation is not established for an unspecified box or capture chain.
- A 24-hour replay is missing or incomplete: YouTube’s automatic archive statement applies to streams under 12 hours. Plan around that limit rather than expecting one full-day archive.
- Monetization or features differ from expectations: verify the Made for Kids selection and review the relevant audience and monetization policies. Kids content does not receive personalized ads, and repetitive loops may be ineligible for monetization.
