For one 720p YouTube live stream, plan for about 8 Mbps of sustained upload bandwidth actually available to the streaming encoder. If your connection is shared with other household or workplace traffic, or varies during the day, aim for 10 Mbps or more and test under real streaming conditions. YouTube’s recommended 720p encoder bitrate is 6 Mbps; applying its recommendation to leave 20% of upload capacity unused gives a calculated target of 7.5 Mbps, rounded to 8 Mbps. These are practical planning figures, not a guaranteed threshold for an uninterrupted 24/7 stream.
How much upload speed does a 720p YouTube stream need?
YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends a 6 Mbps video bitrate for 720p at both 30 and 60 frames per second. The recommendation appears across the listed H.264 and AV1/H.265 codec columns. YouTube also advises leaving 20% headroom between the stream bitrate and available upload capacity. At 6 Mbps, that works out to 7.5 Mbps of available upload (6 ÷ 0.8), so 8 Mbps is a sensible rounded planning floor for a single stream—not a separate official YouTube minimum.
On a busy or inconsistent connection, target 10 Mbps or more of sustained upload available to the encoder. Extra capacity can absorb competing traffic and fluctuations, but no speed-test result by itself guarantees that a connection or the equipment using it will stay online continuously. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance and its streaming tips.
What counts as upload speed?
Use the outbound bandwidth the streaming encoder can actually use, not the advertised download speed or just the headline speed on an internet plan. Available upload can be lower when other devices are uploading, when a shared network is busy, or when the path between the computer and router is unreliable. YouTube says the total stream bitrate should not exceed available upload and recommends leaving room for network variation.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For a single 720p stream, the relevant comparison is its 6 Mbps video bitrate against sustained available upload. A speed test is useful only if it reflects the connection and conditions during the broadcast. YouTube recommends testing upload bitrate and warns that network interruptions can affect a live stream.
Set up and test the connection
- Set the encoder for the stream you intend to run. Use YouTube’s current recommended 6 Mbps video bitrate for 720p, whether you choose 30 or 60 fps. Follow the supported configuration for your encoder and codec.
- Use constant bitrate (CBR). YouTube recommends CBR for live encoding.
- Set a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube recommends two seconds and says not to exceed four seconds.
- Connect by Ethernet where possible. YouTube recommends a wired connection when streaming from a computer. Ethernet can make the local network path more dependable, but it cannot increase the upload bandwidth supplied by your internet provider.
- Run an unlisted test stream. Include the audio and representative movement from the cartoon stream, then check YouTube’s stream-health indicators. A test using a quiet still image or no audio may not represent the actual encoder load and stream conditions.
- Measure during realistic network use. Test at the time and over the network path you plan to use. If other devices share the connection, see whether the available upload remains above the stream bitrate with headroom.
YouTube accepts live streams using RTMP or RTMPS and lists H.264, H.265 (HEVC) and AV1 video options in its encoder guidance. YouTube also transcodes an incoming live stream into multiple playback formats for viewers, so the creator does not need to send a separate feed for every viewer quality. Check the current YouTube encoder settings for the configuration supported by your encoder.

Does a 24/7 cartoon stream need more bandwidth?
The reviewed YouTube encoder and network guidance does not specify a different 720p bitrate for continuous streaming or for cartoon content. The 6 Mbps video recommendation and 20% headroom advice therefore remain the relevant network figures for one 720p stream. The fact that a stream runs continuously raises a separate operational question: bandwidth advice does not establish that an ISP connection, router, computer or power supply will stay operational around the clock.
Validate the whole setup under the conditions in which it will run, and check your internet provider’s terms and service reliability for your location. YouTube recommends a target upload speed 1.5 to 2 times the combined bitrate for simulstreaming across platforms; that advice is for multiple concurrent platform streams, not a mandatory rule for one YouTube stream. See YouTube’s guidance on streaming across platforms.
