You can run multiple always-on YouTube streams from one Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) virtual machine by running a separate encoder process for each channel. Each process needs that channel’s own YouTube ingest URL and private stream key. Whether one VM can handle your chosen number of streams depends on its CPU, outbound network capacity, and each stream’s settings—there is no generally established channel limit. OCI Always Free capacity and availability also depend on your tenancy and region, and Oracle documents circumstances in which idle Always Free instances may be reclaimed.
How the setup works
A persistent OCI VM hosts your video files and runs one encoder process per YouTube channel. Each process sends its feed to YouTube using that channel’s ingest URL and stream key. This is a deployment pattern, not a channel-count guarantee: the required resources depend on the videos, resolution, frame rate, codec, and encoder settings.
Plan around three separate constraints:
- Encoding capacity: the VM must have enough CPU and memory for every encoder process you run.
- Outbound network capacity: the VM must sustain the combined bitrate of all feeds, plus audio and operational headroom.
- YouTube ingest configuration: every process must use settings supported by YouTube and the correct channel’s credentials.
YouTube’s recommended bitrates describe ingest settings; they do not show how many feeds a particular OCI shape can encode. Oracle and YouTube do not publish a universal number of simultaneous channels per VM for this workload.
Check your OCI capacity before building
Oracle’s Always Free Resources documentation says eligible instances must be created in your tenancy’s home region. It describes up to two VM.Standard.E2.1.Micro instances and an A1 allowance currently listed as 1,500 OCPU-hours and 9,000 GB-hours per month—equivalent to 2 OCPUs and 12 GB of memory for Always Free tenancies. The same documentation lists 10 TB of outbound transfer per month. These are service allowances, not a guarantee of VM availability or sustained throughput for your streams. Check your own tenancy’s quotas and eligible shapes in the OCI Console before choosing a design.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Always Free capacity may not be available in the home region when you try to provision an instance. Oracle says an “out of host capacity” error indicates a temporary shortage of Always Free shapes in that region; where supported, try another availability domain or wait and retry.
Oracle also documents possible reclamation of Always Free compute when CPU and network utilization are below 20% at the 95th percentile over a seven-day period; A1 instances also have a memory-utilization condition. A running encoder does not guarantee that an instance is exempt. Review Oracle’s Always Free compute reclamation information and account for the possibility of interruption.

Choose a per-channel stream profile
Start with a modest profile, then test it using the same kind of video motion and audio you intend to stream continuously. YouTube’s H.264 live encoder recommendations include these per-stream bitrates:
| Resolution and frame rate | YouTube-recommended H.264 bitrate per stream |
|---|---|
| 720p30 | 6 Mbps |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps |
Multiply the selected video bitrate by the number of simultaneous feeds to estimate their combined video traffic, then allow extra capacity for audio and operational headroom. For example, three 720p30 feeds at YouTube’s recommended 6 Mbps each require about 18 Mbps for video alone. That arithmetic is not a performance estimate for any OCI shape.

YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport, constant bitrate (CBR), progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, and a two-second keyframe interval (do not exceed four seconds). For audio, it recommends AAC or MP3; for stereo, use 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps. See YouTube’s live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for current guidance and supported codecs.
Set up one encoder process for each channel
- Prepare a persistent OCI VM. Select a shape your tenancy can provision and that has room for the intended encoder workload. Install an encoder that can send your chosen video source to YouTube over RTMPS. The exact operating system, encoder, and process supervisor depend on your implementation; OCI and YouTube do not prescribe one universal setup for this pattern.
- Create or configure a live stream for each YouTube channel. In that channel’s YouTube Live Control Room, obtain the stream URL and stream key. YouTube describes these as encoder inputs; use the corresponding pair for each channel’s process.
- Keep keys private. A stream key tells the encoder where to send the feed and lets YouTube accept it. Treat it like a password: do not put it in public scripts, repositories, screenshots, or logs. If a key is compromised, reset it in YouTube and update the matching encoder configuration. See YouTube’s guidance on stream keys.
- Configure each process separately. Set its own source video, ingest URL, private key, resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, keyframe interval, and audio settings. Do not reuse one channel’s key for another channel.
- Start with fewer feeds and test. Check YouTube’s stream health and the VM’s CPU, memory, and outbound network use while representative content plays. Add concurrent feeds gradually; if resources approach their limits or stream health degrades, reduce the workload or select more capacity.
- Plan for process failures and interruptions. A process supervisor or restart policy can restart an encoder after a process failure, but cannot prevent VM or host outages, account limits, idle-instance reclamation, network problems, or YouTube ingest interruptions. Monitor the streams and verify recovery behavior rather than treating 24/7 operation as guaranteed.
Estimate capacity instead of guessing a channel count
Benchmark the exact instance shape, encoder, resolution, frame rate, codec, and number of processes you plan to use. Test sustained playback—not just startup—with representative motion and audio. Watch CPU and memory use, outbound throughput, and YouTube’s stream-health indicators. Increase the number of feeds only while those measurements remain acceptable. A result from one workload or VM does not establish a universal limit for other instances.

Common problems and what to check
- OCI reports “out of host capacity”: Oracle identifies this as a temporary shortage of Always Free shapes in the home region. Try another availability domain if the shape supports it, or wait and retry.
- YouTube does not accept a feed: confirm that the process uses the intended channel’s ingest URL and current private key, and verify the protocol and encoder settings against YouTube’s guidance.
- A stream becomes unstable as more channels start: compare the combined stream bitrates with outbound capacity and inspect CPU and memory use. Reduce resolution, frame rate, bitrate, or the number of concurrent processes if the VM cannot sustain the workload.
- An encoder stops and stays stopped: inspect its process logs and restart behavior. A restart policy can address a failed process, but it cannot restore a reclaimed or unavailable VM or resolve a YouTube-side interruption by itself.
- A stream key may have been exposed: reset the key in YouTube, replace it in that channel’s process configuration, and keep the new value out of public files and logs.
Or let it run in the cloud
