For one prerecorded product demo, add it to OBS as a Media Source and enable Loop. For several clips, use a VLC Video playlist and enable Loop Playlist. Use OBS scene transitions such as Fade when moving between scenes—but test the file’s own end-to-start boundary separately: looping restarts playback; it does not guarantee a seamless join.
Choose the right OBS playback setup
Use a Media Source when a single local file should repeat. Use VLC Video when you want several files to play in sequence and repeat as a playlist. These controls govern playback; they do not automatically smooth edits between clips or scenes.
| Setup | Best for | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Media Source | Repeating one local video | Turn on Loop to restart the file when it ends. OBS supports common formats including MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, and WebM. OBS Media Sources |
| VLC Video | Playing a sequence of files repeatedly | Add the files as a playlist and enable Loop Playlist. VLC must be installed; 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. Playback may stop when the source is hidden, so test the visibility and scene-switching behavior you plan to use. OBS Media Sources |
For prerecorded clips, a webcam or capture card is not required. Those are separate kinds of video input; OBS distinguishes them from media files in its Sources Guide.
Set up a looping demo in OBS
- Create the scene. In OBS, add a scene for each distinct demo segment or presentation state. A scene is the composition of sources that appears in the stream.
- Add the video. In the scene’s Sources panel, click + and choose Media Source. Create a new source, select the local video file, and confirm. OBS lists MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, and WebM among common supported formats; if playback fails, try a compatible file and verify it plays locally. OBS Media Sources
- Enable repetition. Open the Media Source properties and turn on Loop. For a series instead, add a VLC Video source, build its playlist, and enable Loop Playlist. Install VLC first and match its bitness to OBS (64-bit OBS needs 64-bit VLC). OBS Media Sources
- Check source visibility. If you use VLC Video across scenes, test whether hiding and showing the source affects playback as you intend; OBS notes that VLC playback can stop when its source is hidden. Arrange scene visibility so the playlist behaves predictably.
- Set the composition. Resize and position the source in the preview to fit your stream layout. If you have multiple scenes, prepare each and test how its sources appear before taking it live.
Make transitions between scenes deliberate
OBS includes Cut and Fade transitions, and lets you change transition duration. Select a transition in the OBS transition controls and set its duration, then rehearse it with the actual footage and scene layout. A Cut switches immediately; a Fade blends between the outgoing and incoming scenes. There is no universally correct Fade duration for product demos—the desired effect depends on the footage and pacing. OBS Studio Overview Guide

For safer live changes, OBS Studio Mode lets you prepare an edit scene while the live scene remains on air, then transition to the prepared scene. Use it to check framing, overlays, and the next clip before showing the change to viewers. OBS Studio Overview Guide
Fix the loop point, not just the transition
A scene transition controls how OBS moves between scenes. A Media Source’s Loop control restarts the file. Neither feature makes the clip’s last frame match its first frame, or guarantees that its audio joins cleanly. Inspect the media boundary itself.

- Choose or edit footage whose final image and opening image are compatible in subject, framing, and motion.
- Listen at the end-to-start point for a jump in music, room tone, narration, or volume. Adjust the audio edit or use footage with a more compatible ending and beginning.
- If the demo is a sequence of separate clips, decide whether a direct cut between files suits the content or whether to build transitions into the video before adding it to OBS. Do not assume the playlist loop inserts a crossfade.
- Preview repeated cycles, not just the first playback. Check the visual boundary, audio continuity, and timing in an OBS preview or recording.
OBS documents the restart and playlist controls, not a guarantee of a seam-free edit; the footage and its endpoints determine whether the repeated boundary looks and sounds smooth. OBS Media Sources
Configure and test the YouTube stream
Match encoder settings to the connection
Set resolution, frame rate, and bitrate for the quality you want and the stable upload capacity available to the streaming computer. YouTube publishes encoder recommendations by resolution; do not treat one bitrate row as a universal setting. Its guidance recommends CBR and a two-second keyframe interval, with keyframes no more than four seconds apart. Follow YouTube’s current settings table for the chosen resolution and protocol. Leave upload headroom rather than setting the stream to consume the full connection capacity. YouTube’s encoder guidance also recommends testing with representative audio and movement, since a static or silent test may not reveal how the real program behaves. Connect OBS and preview before going live
- In YouTube Live Control Room, create or schedule the stream and retrieve its stream key and connection details.
- In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube as the service, and connect using the available account or stream-key option. Keep the stream key private: it acts as a credential directing the encoder feed to your stream. YouTube encoder setup
- Start the OBS stream and wait for the incoming signal in Live Control Room. Preview the video and audio there before starting the public broadcast; check stream health and continue monitoring audio and video during the event. YouTube live streaming tips
- Watch at least one full loop in the preview or a test recording. Confirm the file restarts as expected, the end-to-start point is acceptable, playlist order is right if applicable, and any scene transition has the intended timing.
YouTube says a channel needs verification and must not have live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days to be eligible to stream. Check eligibility before the event rather than troubleshooting OBS for a channel-level restriction. YouTube: Get started with live streaming

Troubleshoot common problems
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| The video plays once and stops | Loop is off, or the wrong source type is being used. | For one file, open Media Source properties and enable Loop. For multiple files, use VLC Video and enable Loop Playlist. OBS Media Sources |
| The playlist does not play or loop | VLC is missing, its bitness does not match OBS, or playlist settings are incorrect. | Install VLC, match 64-bit VLC to 64-bit OBS, then check the playlist and Loop Playlist setting. OBS Media Sources |
| Playback changes or stops when switching scenes | The source is hidden, and VLC Video may stop when hidden. | Test the intended source visibility and scene-switching pattern. Adjust which scenes include the source and verify the playlist resumes or continues as needed. OBS Media Sources |
| A flash, jump, or audio bump occurs at repeat | The file’s final and opening frames or audio do not join smoothly. | Inspect the endpoint edit and choose or edit footage with compatible endpoints. Replay the loop in a preview or recording; changing scene transition duration alone does not repair a file boundary. |
| The scene change feels abrupt or sluggish | The selected transition or its duration does not suit the content. | Try Cut or Fade and adjust duration in OBS, then rehearse with the actual scenes. Use Studio Mode to prepare and inspect the next scene before transitioning it live. OBS Studio Overview Guide |
| YouTube shows no incoming stream or poor stream health | Check encoder connection, stream key, channel eligibility, and whether bitrate exceeds stable upload capacity. | Verify the YouTube service and key in OBS, keep the key private, check channel eligibility, and use YouTube’s resolution-specific encoder settings. Preview in Live Control Room and monitor stream health. YouTube encoder setup; YouTube encoder settings |
