For a presenter-led YouTube Live demo, make one OBS scene per product demo and switch scenes with hotkeys or Studio Mode. OBS’s built-in Automatic Scene Switcher can change scenes when a configured application window becomes active, but the official example does not establish a timed rotation. If you need demos to advance unattended at set intervals, do not mistake window-triggered switching for a scheduled loop.
Choose the right way to switch demos
| Method | What triggers the change | Best fit | Timed rotation established? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Scene hotkeys | You press a keyboard shortcut assigned to a scene. | A narrated presentation where you decide when each demo appears. | No; it is operator-controlled. |
| Studio Mode | You prepare a scene in Preview, then transition it to the live output. | A presentation where you want to check the next scene before viewers see it. | No; you trigger the transition. |
| Automatic Scene Switcher | A configured application window becomes active. | Demos displayed in separate application windows, when changing focus is an appropriate trigger. | Not established by the official OBS example; it demonstrates window-focus switching, not timed sequencing. |
OBS’s overview covers scene hotkeys, Studio Mode, and transitions. Its OBS 31.1+ League of Legends example shows configuring scenes for relevant windows through Tools > Automatic Scene Switcher and activating the switcher. That example is specific to application-window focus, not a carousel that advances on a timer.
Build a scene for each product demo
- Create the scenes. In OBS Studio, use the Scenes panel to add one scene per demo. Give each a clear name, such as “Product A” or “Setup walkthrough,” so the correct scene is easy to identify.
- Add each demo’s sources. Select a scene and add the inputs it needs, such as an application or display capture, a browser source, an image, video, and audio. Check that the intended window or content is visible and sized appropriately in the preview.
- Check audio as well as picture. Confirm that the microphone, desktop audio, or other audio source needed for that scene is present and producing the expected levels. Avoid assuming that a visually correct scene has the right audio routing.
- Arrange the sequence you plan to present. Decide what should be on screen at the start and what order you will use. If the demo depends on a live application, open it and make sure its window is available before going live.
Switch scenes during a live presentation
Use hotkeys for direct operator control
In OBS settings, open the Hotkeys section and assign a distinct shortcut to each scene’s “Switch to scene” action. Choose combinations that are unlikely to be pressed accidentally in the application you are demonstrating. Test every shortcut before the broadcast; a hotkey that conflicts with a product’s own keyboard command can interrupt the demo instead of changing the OBS scene.
Use Studio Mode to review the next scene first
Turn on Studio Mode in OBS. The interface separates the Preview scene, which you can edit or select next, from the Program output viewers currently see. Select the next demo in Preview, check its sources and framing, then use the transition control to put it on air. OBS provides transitions for moving the prepared scene to the live output; choose the transition that suits your presentation and test it before the event.

Use Automatic Scene Switcher for window-focused demos
If each demo is a separate application window, open Tools > Automatic Scene Switcher, associate the relevant windows with their scenes, and activate the switcher. Focusing a configured window can then prompt OBS to change scenes, as shown in the OBS 31.1+ example. This is useful when window focus is a reliable signal for the desired scene. It is not evidence that OBS will advance through a fixed schedule while you do nothing.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Prepare the broadcast in YouTube Studio. Create or schedule an encoder stream. Scheduling can help promote the event and let viewers set reminders.
- Enter the encoder details in OBS. In the YouTube stream setup, obtain the stream URL and stream key, then enter them in the encoder’s streaming settings. YouTube’s instruction is: “To start streaming, enter your YouTube Live server URL and stream key into your encoder.” Treat the stream key as private; anyone who obtains it could send video to your broadcast.
- Start the encoder before going live. YouTube advises setting up the encoder in advance. Start streaming from OBS and wait for the Live Control Room preview to appear.
- Check the preview before starting the event. Confirm that the correct scene, picture, and audio reach YouTube. Use an unlisted test stream when you need to rehearse the broadcast flow without presenting it publicly.
- Monitor throughout the stream. Keep an eye on audio and video quality and confirm that scene changes appear as intended. YouTube recommends monitoring the stream rather than assuming a successful preview guarantees the entire event will remain problem-free.
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is an archiving detail, not a guarantee that a longer-running presentation or loop will stay live indefinitely.

What to do if you need a timed demo loop
The switching methods documented here are either operator-triggered or based on application-window focus. The official OBS example does not document rotating scenes at set intervals. If unattended timed sequencing is essential, verify that a current OBS feature or a maintained plugin supports the specific schedule you need before building the show around it. Do not promise a timed loop based solely on hotkeys or the Automatic Scene Switcher.
Preflight checklist
- Each demo has its own clearly named scene and the sources it needs.
- The correct application windows are open and capture sources show the intended content.
- Hotkeys do not conflict with commands in the demo applications, or Studio Mode transitions have been rehearsed.
- If using Automatic Scene Switcher, the configured window-to-scene associations are correct and focus changes produce the expected result.
- YouTube receives the expected picture and audio in the Live Control Room preview before the event begins.
- The presenter knows whether scene changes are manual or window-triggered; neither should be described as a timed rotation without separate verification.
Troubleshooting scene changes and YouTube preview
- The wrong scene appears after a shortcut. Revisit OBS Hotkeys and check which scene action is bound to the key combination. Change conflicting shortcuts and test again.
- A window change does not trigger the expected scene. Check that the correct window is associated with the scene in Automatic Scene Switcher and that the switcher is active. The documented behavior depends on a configured window becoming active.
- The next scene appears unexpectedly. If using Automatic Scene Switcher, check which configured window currently has focus. If that trigger is not predictable for your workflow, use operator-led hotkeys or Studio Mode instead.
- The YouTube preview is missing. Confirm that OBS has the intended stream URL and key entered, start the encoder, and allow the Live Control Room preview to load before starting the broadcast.
- Viewers cannot hear the demo or presenter. Check the audio sources and levels in OBS, then verify audio in the YouTube preview before proceeding.
Or let it run in the cloud
