If a 24/7 YouTube stream has no one available to review live chat, either arrange trusted moderator coverage or turn live chat off. YouTube’s automatic filters can hold some potentially inappropriate messages, but they are imperfect and held messages remain hidden until a moderator acts. With chat off, viewers cannot send Super Chats or Super Stickers on that video.
Choose whether chat can safely remain open
Use the option that matches your channel’s ability to respond during unattended hours. Filters can reduce exposure, but they are not a substitute for a person who can make moderation decisions.

Keep chat open: set up human coverage and safeguards
1. Appoint a moderator with the right role
A standard moderator can remove messages, put users in time out, hide users, and review held messages. A managing moderator has additional moderation controls, including the ability to change some live chat settings. YouTube says managing moderators do not have access to Live Control Room or YouTube Studio, so the channel owner should configure stream and channel settings in advance. Agree on who is covering which hours, what warrants removal or a timeout, and when the moderator should escalate an issue to the channel owner. Do not leave responsibility ambiguous across overnight or handoff periods.
2. Configure automatic moderation before the unattended period
In YouTube Studio, choose a moderation level of None, Basic, or Strict for potentially inappropriate messages. With Basic or Strict enabled, YouTube may hold messages for review. A held message stays hidden unless an authorized person chooses to show it. You can also maintain a blocked-words list and enable slow mode. YouTube cautions that automated moderation is not perfect; these settings should supplement, not replace, human coverage. Details are in Moderate live chat.

3. Apply one clear rule to paid and unpaid messages
Super Chats and Super Stickers can be moderated like other chat messages. State your chat rules clearly and apply them consistently: payment does not guarantee that a message will remain visible or receive a response. YouTube’s Super Chat and Super Sticker management guidance explains how creators can manage Supers.
No moderator available? Turn chat off
If nobody can cover the chat and you do not want unattended messages to appear, the channel owner can turn live chat off during a stream. YouTube documents an exception for Premieres. While chat is off, Super Chats and Super Stickers are unavailable for that video. This is the clearest way to avoid new unattended chat messages, but it also gives up live chat interaction and Supers for the period chat is disabled. What moderation means for a Super Chat payment
A Super Chat is still subject to chat moderation. If YouTube removes a Super Chat or Super Sticker for violating YouTube policies, YouTube says it donates its portion of the revenue to charity. A channel’s moderator removing or hiding a paid message does not create a refund for the buyer. YouTube describes Supers as voluntary, non-refundable payments; deleting a Super Chat message after the live stream also does not cause a refund. See YouTube’s Super Chat management page and buyer guidance for Super Chats and Super Stickers. Avoid promising a refund in your chat rules or moderation response.
How creator revenue is calculated
YouTube says creators receive 70% of Supers revenue confirmed by Google, calculated after local sales tax and iOS App Store fees. YouTube says transaction costs such as credit card fees are currently covered by YouTube. The 70% figure therefore should not be read as 70% of every displayed purchase amount before those deductions. See YouTube’s Super Chat and Super Sticker management guidance.
