You configure YouTube membership badges and custom emoji in YouTube Studio’s Memberships area—not in a separate 24/7-stream setting. Once enabled, badges identify members beside their names in your channel’s live chat, while members can use your uploaded emoji there. YouTube’s guidance describes these as standard channel membership features; it does not specify a separate setup or guarantee for streams running around the clock.
What members see in live chat
A membership badge appears next to a member’s channel name in live chat and comments on the channel they joined. Badges can reflect active paid membership tenure. YouTube’s listed stages are new, 1 month, 2 months, 6 months, 1 year, 2 years, 3 years, 4 years, and 5 years. The badge is channel-specific: membership on one channel does not grant a badge on another.
Members can also use creator-uploaded custom emoji in live chat and in comments on that channel’s videos. The creator assigns the emoji a family name, which members can use to autocomplete emoji in chat. YouTube says all members can use uploaded emoji regardless of their membership level.
These features apply to YouTube live chat generally, not to a distinct 24/7 chat mode. YouTube says live chat is available on watch pages, not embedded players. If viewers watch an embedded player, they should open the YouTube watch page to use chat.

Set up badges and custom emoji in YouTube Studio
These instructions assume channel memberships are available and enabled for your channel. YouTube’s navigation and eligibility requirements can change, so check its current Help guidance if the labels differ.
- Open the Memberships area. In YouTube Studio, go to the channel’s Memberships tools. Use the Loyalty badges controls to manage badge artwork and the emoji controls to upload custom emoji.
- Choose a badge approach. You can use YouTube’s default badges, upload custom badges, or combine the two. If you upload artwork, make sure it remains recognizable at the small size used in chat. Consider whether your design covers the tenure stages you want members to distinguish.
- Prepare and upload badge files. YouTube Help specifies JPEG or PNG files under 1 MB, with a minimum size of 32 × 32 pixels. Badges render at 16 × 16 pixels in live chat and 14 × 14 pixels in comments and the Posts tab.
- Upload custom emoji. YouTube prefers JPEG, PNG, or GIF files under 1 MB, with dimensions from 48 × 48 pixels (preferred) to 480 × 480 pixels. GIF emoji display as static images, not animation. Emoji render at 24 × 24 points on mobile and most monitors; Retina and HiDPI monitors may show them at 48 × 48 pixels or larger.
- Name the emoji family. Give your emoji a family name members can use to autocomplete them in live chat. Plan the set around useful, legible expressions or symbols rather than details that disappear at small display sizes.
- Review availability and the member experience. Check the Memberships tools to confirm the assets and benefits shown for your channel. If a member cannot purchase a membership or use a benefit, check that memberships are available for their location and that the benefit is part of your channel’s offer.
YouTube Help’s emoji-slot table starts at four emoji when a channel has zero members and reaches 54 slots at 5,000 or more members, with additional thresholds in between. Check the current table in YouTube Help when planning a set; the page does not display a publication year for these limits.

Keep badges and emoji distinct from membership levels
YouTube permits up to six membership levels, with one to five perks per level; higher levels inherit the perks of lower ones. Badges and emoji are configured as membership benefits, but deciding which other benefits to offer at each level is a separate choice. Don’t assume that another channel’s setup—or members-only chat—is automatically part of yours. The creator controls which perks are offered.
For artwork, the practical trade-offs are effort, clarity at the rendered size, how well the badge stages communicate tenure, and how much upkeep a larger emoji set requires. YouTube’s guidance provides asset specifications and slot limits, not comparative performance data for different designs.

What applies to a 24/7 stream—and what does not
A stream running continuously does not get a special badge or emoji configuration according to YouTube’s published membership and live-chat guidance. The relevant features are still your channel’s membership benefits and YouTube live chat. The guidance reviewed does not promise uninterrupted availability of these features on a 24/7 stream.
YouTube’s general live-chat guidance says viewers may send up to 11 messages every 30 seconds, and each message is limited to 200 characters. Those are general chat rules, not special restrictions on membership badges or custom emoji.

Eligibility and availability
Memberships are not available to every creator or viewer in every location. Check YouTube’s guidance on channel eligibility, location availability, and membership policies before building your setup around paid memberships. Viewers also need to be in a location where memberships can be purchased. Perks vary by channel and tier, so do not promise custom art or members-only chat unless your channel actually offers it.
