You can loop an existing Nintendo Switch gameplay video on YouTube by loading the file into OBS as a Media Source, enabling Loop, and sending it to YouTube with an encoder stream key. You cannot currently stream gameplay directly from a Switch to YouTube, according to Nintendo; a computer is needed for the OBS method.

What you need before you start

  • A recorded gameplay video file on your computer. This guide covers streaming an existing VOD, not recording a full Switch session.
  • OBS Studio and a stable internet connection with enough upload capacity for your chosen stream bitrate.
  • A verified YouTube channel with no livestream restriction in the preceding 90 days. First-time livestream activation can take up to 24 hours, according to YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.

Keep the YouTube stream key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your channel.

How do I stream prerecorded gameplay on YouTube?

1. Enable livestreaming and prepare the YouTube event

  1. Sign in to YouTube Studio and open the Live Control Room. If this is your first livestream, enable access and allow up to 24 hours for activation.
  2. Create or select the live event and choose the encoder workflow. YouTube provides a stream URL and stream key for the encoder.
  3. Keep the Live Control Room open so you can check the incoming preview before the broadcast begins.

2. Add and loop the VOD in OBS

  1. Open OBS and add a scene if you do not already have one.
  2. In the Sources box, select +, then Media Source. Name the source and select OK.
  3. In the Media Source properties, enable Local File and browse to the gameplay video on your computer.
  4. Check Loop so OBS starts the file again when it reaches the end. Confirm the video appears in the OBS preview and that any intended audio is audible.
  5. Use the OBS preview to frame the video correctly. If the source and canvas have different aspect ratios, check for cropping or empty bars before going live.

OBS documents Media Source file playback and looping in its Media Sources guide.

3. Connect OBS to YouTube and go live

  1. In OBS, open Settings > Stream. Choose YouTube as the service and connect your account, or select the option to use a stream key, depending on the available OBS workflow.
  2. If using the key, copy the stream URL and stream key from YouTube’s Live Control Room into the corresponding OBS fields. Do not share or publish the key.
  3. In OBS, select Start Streaming. Wait for the YouTube Live Control Room to receive the signal and show the preview.
  4. Check picture, audio, framing, and the event’s visibility settings. Start the event from the Live Control Room when the preview is correct.
  5. Keep OBS, the computer, and the network connection running while the stream is live. Monitor both OBS and YouTube for dropped frames, missing audio, or loss of signal.

YouTube’s encoder workflow and stream setup are described in YouTube Help.

Can I stream Switch gameplay directly to YouTube?

No. Nintendo says gameplay cannot currently be streamed directly from a Nintendo Switch to YouTube. For the method above, the VOD must already be a file on a computer, and OBS sends that file to YouTube.

If you still need to make long-form footage from the console, a USB HDMI capture card can feed the Switch’s video output to a computer for recording or encoding. It is an optional footage-acquisition step, not something required to loop a VOD you already have. Compatibility depends on the capture device, computer, and console setup; a vendor’s Switch/OBS example does not establish that every card works with every configuration. Nintendo’s note on direct streaming is in its Switch support guidance.

Can the Switch Capture Button record a full session?

No. Nintendo says holding the Capture Button saves up to 30 seconds of gameplay from before the button press. The clip is available in Album, and some games do not support capture; check the individual game if the feature is unavailable. This short-clip function is not full-session recording.

Nintendo documents copying captures to a Windows computer over a data-capable USB cable connected directly to the Switch; the dock’s USB ports do not support that transfer feature. Nintendo identifies microSD as an alternative when USB transfer cannot be used. See Nintendo’s transfer instructions and its capture guidance.

How long can a YouTube livestream run before it stops saving?

If the replay matters, plan each live event to last less than 12 hours. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. YouTube also cautions that DVR rewind may be limited or unavailable on streams longer than 12 hours. These are platform behaviors, not a guarantee that every shorter stream will archive successfully.

For a long-running loop, retain a local recording and deliberately end the event and start a new one before it reaches 12 hours. This creates separate live events and avoids relying on an archive for a longer stream. See YouTube’s live stream archiving guidance and DVR guidance.

Settings and network checks for a steadier stream

Match OBS output to the source and connection

There is no single bitrate or resolution that suits every VOD and uplink. Choose an output your computer can encode and your internet connection can sustain; avoid increasing resolution or bitrate beyond the source’s useful quality. Check YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrates for the resolution and frame rate you intend to send.

Leave upload headroom

YouTube’s streaming tips recommend about 20% more upload bandwidth than the stream bitrate. That headroom helps absorb normal connection variation; it does not guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast. Use a wired connection where practical, stop other heavy uploads, and test the actual setup before a public event. See YouTube’s streaming tips.

Test and monitor

  • Run a private or unlisted test and confirm that the YouTube preview receives both picture and sound.
  • Check that the loop restarts cleanly at the end of the file and that the VOD does not contain an unintended blank interval or abrupt audio change.
  • Keep OBS and the computer awake, and monitor the live event while it runs. A loop setting does not protect against a computer shutdown, OBS failure, power loss, or network outage.
  • Keep a local copy of the source recording if the footage or eventual replay is important.

Check Nintendo’s rules before looping gameplay

Nintendo’s Game Content Guidelines apply to uploads and livestreams. The guidelines encourage creator input and commentary, and say creators may not simply upload or livestream existing Nintendo video or gameplay footage without their own creative or editorial input. The guidelines separately permit posting gameplay videos and screenshots using Nintendo system features, such as the Switch Capture Button, without additional input or commentary. Because a continuous loop repeats footage, review the current guideline for your specific content rather than assuming the short-clip allowance covers every use.

Nintendo also says third-party intellectual property requires the necessary third-party permissions and that creators must not imply Nintendo sponsorship or affiliation. Game music or other material may raise separate rights questions. The current Nintendo Game Content Guidelines were updated September 2, 2024. They state: “The Guidelines cover both uploads and livestreams.”

Troubleshooting common failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check
YouTube receives no signal Livestreaming is not enabled yet, the stream key or URL is wrong, or OBS is not sending. Check channel eligibility and activation status, verify the YouTube event is open, and copy the current stream details into OBS again.
The YouTube preview is black The Media Source file path is invalid, the source is hidden, or the selected scene does not contain the source. Open the Media Source properties, confirm the file exists at that path, and check source visibility and scene selection.
Video plays once and stops Loop is not enabled on the Media Source. Open the source properties and check Loop.
Picture works but there is no sound The file may have no usable audio track, or OBS audio routing/mute settings may be wrong. Play the file locally, inspect OBS audio meters, and verify the source is not muted before testing again.
Stream stutters or drops frames The computer may be overloaded or the uplink may not sustain the selected bitrate. Reduce output demands, close competing applications and uploads, and test with more upload headroom; YouTube recommends about 20% beyond the stream bitrate.
The replay is missing or cannot be rewound The event exceeded YouTube’s 12-hour archive/DVR caveat. For future streams, end and restart before 12 hours and keep a local recording when the replay matters.

  • Automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream.
