To stream an Icecast radio feed to YouTube with FFmpeg, use the station’s listener URL as the audio input, add a video source such as a looping still image, and send the combined output to the RTMPS ingest URL and stream key shown in YouTube Live Control Room. The steps below show the workflow, the settings to check, and what to do when the feed will not connect.

What you need before you start

  • An Icecast listener or playback URL for the station’s mount point. It is not the source-client address used to publish audio to Icecast.
  • An image file for the video layer, such as station artwork. This is one simple way to give an audio-only feed a visual component.
  • FFmpeg built with the protocols and encoders used in the command below, including RTMPS output support and the libx264 encoder.
  • A YouTube channel set up for live streaming, plus the stream URL and stream key from Live Control Room.
  • A stable internet connection with enough upstream capacity for the selected video and audio bitrates.

The Icecast listener URL and its audio format are specific to your station. The URL may use HTTP or HTTPS, and the feed may require authentication, request headers, or a particular user-agent. Confirm the correct listener address and access requirements with the station operator or its documentation.

Set up the YouTube stream

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to Live Control Room. Create or open the broadcast you intend to use.
  2. Copy the stream URL and stream key displayed for that stream. YouTube describes the key as acting like a password and address for accepting an encoder feed. Follow the values shown in Live Control Room rather than assuming a server address or port.
  3. Keep the key private. Do not put a real key in an article, screenshot, shell history, public repository, or log. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update FFmpeg with the replacement.

Prepare the FFmpeg command

In the example, station-artwork.jpg is looped as video while FFmpeg reads audio from the Icecast listener URL. Replace the example URL and ingest value locally. Do not publish your real stream key.

export ICECAST_URL='https://radio.example.org/live.mp3'
export YT_INGEST='rtmps://a.rtmps.youtube.com:443/live2/YOUR_STREAM_KEY'
ffmpeg -re
  -stream_loop -1 -framerate 1 -i station-artwork.jpg
  -i "$ICECAST_URL"
  -map 0:v:0 -map 1:a:0
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -tune stillimage
  -r 30 -g 60 -b:v 2500k -maxrate 2500k -bufsize 5000k
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
  -f flv "$YT_INGEST"

This is an illustrative template, not a tested command. The video bitrate of 2500 kbps is a practical starting point for this example, not YouTube’s recommendation for 720p30. Adjust resolution and bitrate for your connection and visual layer; a static image can use less video data than moving footage, but the connection still needs stable headroom.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

What the important options do

  • -stream_loop -1 repeats the image indefinitely; -framerate 1 reads it as a low-frame-rate still source before output encoding.
  • -map 0:v:0 -map 1:a:0 explicitly selects video from the first input and audio from the second. If the Icecast input does not expose an audio stream, this mapping will fail.
  • -r 30 -g 60 sets 30 output frames per second and a 60-frame GOP, corresponding to a two-second keyframe interval.
  • -b:v, -maxrate, and -bufsize set video rate-control values. Keep the target within the stable upload capacity available to the machine running FFmpeg.
  • -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100 encodes stereo audio as AAC at 128 kbps and 44.1 kHz, matching YouTube’s recommended stereo audio settings.
  • -f flv formats the outgoing feed for RTMP/RTMPS ingest.

Match YouTube’s ingest settings

YouTube’s current encoder guidance recommends RTMPS to encrypt data sent to its servers, constant bitrate (CBR), and a keyframe interval of two seconds, not exceeding four seconds. For RTMP/RTMPS it lists H.264, HEVC, and AV1 video, and AAC or MP3 audio. For stereo audio, it recommends 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps. Its recommended H.264 bitrate for 720p at 30 fps is 8 Mbps; that figure is a YouTube recommendation, not a guarantee that a particular connection can sustain it. See YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.

The sample command uses H.264 and AAC as a straightforward compatibility-oriented choice. It does not explicitly set a CBR rate-control mode; if you need to configure CBR explicitly, check the options supported by your installed FFmpeg build and encoder. Select the video bitrate based on reliably available upstream bandwidth, leaving capacity for normal network variation and other traffic.

Start, verify, and end the broadcast

  1. Run the command and inspect FFmpeg’s output for input, encoder, or connection errors.
  2. In Live Control Room, wait for the incoming preview and check the stream-health messages. YouTube’s guidance says, “Make sure to test before you start your live stream.” See YouTube Help’s encoder guidance.
  3. For a scheduled broadcast, use the Live Control Room workflow and select Go live when the preview is ready. Verify that the audio is audible and the visual layer appears as expected.
  4. When finished, stop sending content from FFmpeg and end the broadcast in Live Control Room. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume the same archive behavior for a longer session. See YouTube’s live encoder workflow.

Troubleshoot common failures

No preview or no incoming feed

  • Check that the output URL and current stream key match the values for the selected broadcast in Live Control Room.
  • Verify that outbound network access to the ingest endpoint is allowed, that FFmpeg reaches the output stage, and that the command is producing FLV output.
  • If the key may have been exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the command.

Audio is missing

  • Confirm that the URL is the station’s listener mount point and that it currently plays in a browser or audio player.
  • Check that the Icecast input is the second input and that -map 1:a:0 selects an audio stream. Use FFmpeg or ffprobe to inspect the feed and its codec.
  • FFmpeg’s icecast:// protocol is for streaming to Icecast servers; it is not the normal listener URL for reading a station feed in this workflow. See FFmpeg protocol documentation.
  • If the feed needs authentication, headers, a different user-agent, or special protocol handling, apply the requirements for that station’s listener endpoint.

Disconnects, buffering, or an FFmpeg exit

  • Reduce the video bitrate or resolution if the upstream connection cannot sustain the output reliably, then check stream health again.
  • Check the machine’s network stability and whether other traffic is competing for upload capacity.
  • FFmpeg alone does not ensure automatic recovery from every station or network interruption. For unattended operation, an external process supervisor or service manager may be needed; that is an operational choice, not a YouTube requirement.
  • For broadcasts longer than 12 hours, plan an intentional stop and restart and verify YouTube’s current archive behavior rather than assuming one uninterrupted archive.

Copyright and channel considerations

Before relaying a station feed, confirm that you have the rights and permissions needed for the music, spoken-word recordings, artwork, and other material in it. YouTube may apply its copyright policies to a live broadcast. A stream being available on Icecast does not by itself establish permission to retransmit its contents on YouTube. Review YouTube’s current guidance and resolve rights questions with the relevant rights holders before going live.

Or let it run in the cloud

If you want a YouTube channel to keep playing uploaded recordings around the clock rather than relay a live Icecast feed, StreamNeo is a different workflow: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. It loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it can recover automatically if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded videos, not a live camera or an Icecast input. Start the free day.
