A YouTube gaming livestream reaching 12 hours is not, by itself, proof that YouTube automatically ended it. First work out what “stopped” means: the live broadcast ended, viewers lost rewind, or the broadcast ended but its replay was not saved. YouTube documents possible DVR and archive limitations beyond 12 hours; use the checks below to narrow down an actual interruption.
First identify what stopped

YouTube’s help pages describe the archive and DVR limitations, but do not state that an active stream is automatically terminated at 12 hours. Without the broadcast’s status, encoder logs, network diagnostics, and Studio notices, the cause of a particular stop cannot be identified from its duration alone.
If the live broadcast actually ended
Work from the source outward: confirm the encoder was still producing a healthy signal, then check the network path and YouTube’s status information. YouTube’s Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream guidance recommends checking encoder software, output, errors, CPU load, and outbound internet connectivity.
Check the encoder and computer
- Use the latest version of your encoder software, as YouTube recommends.
- Inspect the encoder’s preview or output and its logs for errors around the time the broadcast ended. Check whether the stream looked and sounded normal before the interruption.
- Look at CPU load and other resource warnings. A system under strain can help explain encoder problems, but a high load alone does not prove the cause.
- If you recorded locally, review the file around the affected time for missing video, audio problems, or an abrupt end.
Check YouTube’s live controls and channel notices
Preview the stream in Live Control Room and monitor its quality while broadcasting, following YouTube’s YouTube live streaming tips – Computer. After an unexplained interruption, inspect Live Control Room and YouTube Studio for status information, policy notices, or strikes. A Studio notice can point to a platform or policy issue; its absence does not establish that the encoder or network was responsible.

Test outbound connectivity
If the encoder appears healthy, test the outbound internet connection. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends contacting your internet service provider if the test indicates a connection issue. Avoid buying networking equipment before a connectivity problem has been identified: equipment is not a substitute for diagnosing the route that failed.
Check whether policy interrupted the stream
YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If a match remains in the stream, YouTube says the broadcast may be temporarily interrupted or terminated. A copyright or Community Guidelines strike can also terminate a live stream. Review YouTube Studio for notices or strikes, and consult Copyright issues with live streams. A gaming rerun may contain game audio, music, or other third-party material, so check the actual content and any notice rather than assuming that the 12-hour mark caused the interruption.

Protect a long gaming rerun with a local recording
YouTube recommends keeping a local archive backup. This matters for long sessions because YouTube warns that a stream exceeding 12 hours may not be captured as a platform archive. A local copy is a separate backup; it does not make YouTube create an archive.
- Before going live, enable local recording in your encoder and choose a location with sufficient free storage for the expected recording.
- Start the recording with the broadcast. During setup, verify that the file exists and its size is growing; YouTube’s encoder tips recommend checking this.
- After the stream, confirm the file finished and can be played. For long sessions, consider storing the recording on an external drive if that suits your storage needs; YouTube does not require or endorse a particular drive, and the capacity needed depends on recording settings and duration.
