For a typical live gaming stream, start with FFmpeg’s default timestamp handling; add -copyts only when the source’s existing timeline matters. If you want to retain that timeline but have the output begin at zero, use -copyts with -start_at_zero. Neither option guarantees identical timestamps at the output: frame synchronization and muxer processing can still change them. If by “replay” you mean rewinding while live, enable DVR in YouTube Studio—FFmpeg timestamp flags do not turn DVR on. If you mean a recording after the stream, treat that as a separate archive issue.
First decide what “replay” means
YouTube uses two different mechanisms that can matter to a gaming replay stream:
- Live DVR: viewers can pause, rewind, and resume during the ongoing broadcast. You control this in YouTube Studio, not with FFmpeg timestamp flags. Viewers cannot seek to before the stream began, and DVR may be limited or unavailable on very long streams. YouTube Help: Enable DVR on live streams.
- Post-stream archive: a recording that may be available after the broadcast ends. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived, but streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured. YouTube recommends keeping a local backup. YouTube Help: Archive live streams.
Use FFmpeg timestamp options to address the input and output timeline. Set DVR separately in YouTube Studio, and record locally if losing the post-stream recording would matter.
Choose timestamp options for the source, not for DVR
Ordinary live transcode: leave timestamp handling at its default
For a regular live gaming feed being encoded for YouTube, begin without -copyts. FFmpeg’s normal handling is the sensible starting point when there is no specific source-timeline requirement. Do not add timestamp-preservation flags just to make viewers able to rewind.

Preserve the input timeline: use -copyts conditionally
-copyts tells FFmpeg to retain input timestamp values rather than sanitize them. Consider it when the source has a meaningful timing relationship or offset that your workflow needs to preserve. It does not promise byte-for-byte timestamp identity: synchronization and muxer processing can still alter output timestamps. See the FFmpeg documentation.
Keep relative timing but start output at zero
If you want to retain the source timeline’s relative timing while shifting its start to zero, combine -copyts with -start_at_zero. Put these as global options in the appropriate position for your installed FFmpeg version, before the relevant input options. Verify the resulting timestamps; FFmpeg notes that other processing can still affect them.

ffmpeg -copyts -start_at_zero -i input.mkv This is a schematic example, not a complete YouTube command: the required encoding, audio, output URL, and options depend on the source and delivery setup. Never put a real stream key in a published command or share it in logs or screenshots.
Variable-frame-rate stream copy: test -copytb 1 only for the relevant symptom
If you are stream-copying variable-frame-rate video and encounter non-monotonic timestamps, FFmpeg documents -copytb 1 as selecting the demuxer timebase; this may avoid the issue. It is a targeted option to test with the actual source, not a general live-stream setting. It applies to a different decision from whether to preserve the input timeline with -copyts. Consult the FFmpeg documentation and inspect the resulting packet timing.

Match YouTube’s ingest settings
Correct timestamps do not compensate for an incompatible encoder configuration. YouTube’s encoder guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS, H.264, H.265/HEVC, or AV1 video, frame rates up to 60 fps, CBR, and AAC or MP3 audio. It recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds. Bitrate recommendations depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate, so consult YouTube’s current table rather than applying one bitrate to every gaming stream. YouTube Help: Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
- Protocol: YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery; its documentation describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL. Encoder settings.
- Stream URL and key: get these from your channel’s Live Control Room. A stream key is a credential: do not expose it in a command example, public post, or unredacted diagnostic log. YouTube Help: Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Keyframes and bitrate: use the two-second keyframe interval as the target, stay within YouTube’s four-second maximum, and choose a listed bitrate for your exact codec and output format.
- Audio and frame rate: select a supported audio codec and a frame rate your encoder and source can sustain; YouTube’s general guidance lists up to 60 fps.
YouTube says it transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for viewers on different devices and networks. That does not remove the need to send a supported, stable ingest stream.

Validate timestamps and the live preview before going public
- Record your setup: save the exact FFmpeg command with the stream key redacted, the output of
ffmpeg -version, and details of whether the video is being encoded or stream-copied. - Probe the input and output: inspect stream start times and packet or frame PTS/DTS. Look for missing timestamps, discontinuities, or timestamps that move backward. Compare before and after any timestamp flags.
- Change one thing at a time: test the default first, then add
-copytsonly if source timing needs preservation. If a preserved timeline should start at zero, test-start_at_zeroalongside it. For non-monotonic timestamps in variable-frame-rate stream copy, separately test-copytb 1. - Run a representative private or unlisted test: include the kind of gameplay motion and audio you expect to stream. Check the Live Control Room preview and stream health before switching to a public session. YouTube Help: encoder settings and stream health.
- Check the local recording: if the archive matters, confirm the local file is growing and playable. Do not rely on an FFmpeg timestamp option to guarantee YouTube will retain an archive.
Troubleshoot by symptom
Viewers cannot rewind during the live broadcast
Check the DVR setting in YouTube Studio. -copyts, -start_at_zero, and -copytb do not enable DVR. Remember that YouTube does not let viewers seek to before the live stream began, and very long streams may have restricted or unavailable DVR.
FFmpeg reports non-monotonic timestamps during variable-frame-rate stream copy
Confirm that the video is being stream-copied and that the source is variable-frame-rate. Test -copytb 1, then inspect packet timing to see whether the problem changes. Do not assume this is the right fix for an encoded stream or a different timestamp problem.

The output timing is unexpectedly offset or changed
Compare input and output stream start times and packet or frame PTS/DTS, and check whether -copyts is appropriate for the source. If you need to retain relative timing but shift the output start to zero, test -copyts with -start_at_zero. Synchronization and muxer processing can still change timestamps, so judge the actual output rather than assuming the flags guarantee identity.
The stream is not ingesting cleanly
Check the Live Control Room preview and stream-health details, then verify the protocol, codec, CBR mode, keyframe interval, resolution-specific bitrate, frame rate, and audio against YouTube’s encoder guidance. Confirm that the stream URL and key came from the correct Live Control Room setup, and keep the key private.
The stream ended but no YouTube replay appeared
Check whether the stream exceeded 12 hours: YouTube warns that longer streams may not be captured. A timestamp flag cannot guarantee the platform archive. For future sessions, keep a local recording and verify that it is playable.
