You can loop a playlist of local video files to YouTube Live with FFmpeg on Windows using the concat demuxer, a YouTube encoder stream URL and key, and a continuously running PC with stable upload capacity. The command below is a starting point—not a tested, universal preset—so first confirm your media is compatible, tune the encoder to YouTube’s current recommendations and your connection, and run a private or unlisted test.
Before you begin: enable YouTube Live and prepare the PC
YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-streaming restrictions in the past 90 days. First-time live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours, so do not leave activation until launch day. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility and setup guidance.
- In YouTube Studio, create or schedule a live stream using an encoder. In Live Control Room, copy the stream URL and stream key. The key is a credential: do not share it or publish it in scripts, screenshots, or logs. Reset it if it is exposed. See YouTube’s encoder setup instructions.
- Install an FFmpeg build from a source you trust. Confirm that the build includes the input demuxer, chosen video encoder, RTMPS support if you plan to use it, and FLV muxing. This workflow does not prescribe a third-party Windows build provider.
- Make sure the PC can remain powered on, the network connection has sustained outbound capacity, and there is enough storage for any local recordings. A 24/7 stream needs monitoring and a recovery plan; one FFmpeg process alone does not provide continuous operations.
YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted extension of RTMP. Use the exact server URL and key arrangement shown in Live Control Room, and choose the RTMPS option if it is available for the stream. Details: YouTube’s RTMPS guidance.
Build a playlist FFmpeg can read
The concat demuxer reads a text file containing media paths and processes them in order. Save a UTF-8 text file such as playlist.txt alongside your media, or use absolute paths:

file 'C:/streams/video-02.mp4'Paths containing apostrophes or unusual characters need appropriate escaping. The concat demuxer is best suited to files with matching streams, codecs, and time bases. Even then, duration or timestamp problems can cause gaps or artifacts at clip boundaries; compatible files do not guarantee seamless transitions. Read the FFmpeg documentation for the concat demuxer.
If the clips differ in codec parameters, frame rate, resolution, audio format, or stream layout, standardize them before concatenating or use a concat-filter workflow that decodes and re-encodes the inputs. That gives more control but requires processing and encoding resources. See the FFmpeg FAQ on concatenation. Do not assume that a playlist of arbitrary files can be joined safely with stream copy.

Choose bitrate, resolution, and keyframes
YouTube’s current encoder-settings guidance, accessed October 3, 2026, recommends H.264, constant bitrate, AAC or MP3 audio, a two-second keyframe interval, and no more than four seconds between keyframes. The bitrate ranges below are YouTube input recommendations, not guarantees of the quality viewers will receive. Use a frame rate and resolution that your source and encoder can sustain.

Allow network headroom: YouTube recommends 20% above the stream bitrate. If using a backup encoder, its streaming tips say to budget the primary bitrate plus the backup bitrate and 20%. The example command uses a 4,500 kbps video bitrate and a 60-frame GOP. At an actual output rate of 30 fps, 60 frames represents a two-second GOP. If you change the frame rate, adjust the GOP accordingly; the argument only represents two seconds when the encoder emits the intended rate.
Start the looping stream with FFmpeg
For compatible H.264/AAC media, this command is an illustrative starting pattern for Windows, not a tested end-to-end command or a universal YouTube preset:

The example does not explicitly set output resolution or frame rate. If you need a specific output, add suitable scaling and frame-rate options and verify the result in YouTube’s preview. If using -c copy instead of encoding, first confirm that every playlist file is compatible with the others and that its existing codec parameters fit YouTube’s accepted input settings. Stream copy reduces encoding work but offers less control; re-encoding consumes CPU or GPU resources.
Test privately before relying on a continuous broadcast
- Start the command with a private or unlisted test stream in Live Control Room.
- Check the preview for picture, motion, sound, and transitions between playlist items. Confirm that the stream health is acceptable and the viewer page is accessible as intended.
- Check that any local recording or archive you rely on is actually growing. Do not infer that a stream is being saved just because it is live.
- During a longer run, monitor the FFmpeg process, YouTube stream health, upload connection, available storage, and PC power. Decide in advance who or what will detect a failure and restart or recover the stream.
YouTube warns that a connectivity disruption can break a stream. A stable network path and a recovery or backup plan matter as much as the initial command. An uninterruptible power supply for the PC and router may help with brief power interruptions, but it does not provide internet service or guarantee an uninterrupted broadcast.

Plan for interruptions, archives, and content rights
Recovery after a disconnect
A network interruption or encoder failure can end the outgoing feed. Monitor both FFmpeg and YouTube’s stream health, and arrange a restart or supervised-process strategy if you need the service to resume after a failure. Test what happens after a deliberate short interruption before treating the setup as unattended.
Archive duration
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not rely on a single broadcast longer than that being saved as one complete archive. If a complete replay matters, use shorter stream sessions or a separately verified recording workflow. The archive statement is in YouTube’s encoder instructions.
Copyright and permission
Looping a video does not grant permission to rebroadcast it. Before putting a playlist on a public stream, make sure you have the necessary rights for every video, soundtrack, and other included material, and consider how YouTube’s copyright enforcement may affect the broadcast. Do not treat a successful test stream as proof that the content is cleared for ongoing use.
