YouTube Studio lets you schedule individual live events and reuse settings from an earlier stream, but its documented workflow does not provide an automatic weekly or daily recurrence rule. For a recurring online radio show, schedule each dated occurrence in Studio, or use the YouTube Live Streaming API to create a separate broadcast for each occurrence. A compatible encoder still has to send the station’s feed to YouTube.
Does YouTube schedule a recurring Live stream automatically?
Not through the recurring-event control described in YouTube Studio’s published workflow. Studio schedules a specific event; you can repeat the process for each date and reuse settings from a previous stream. For a larger or automated calendar, the YouTube Live Streaming API can create distinct broadcast events programmatically. Neither approach means one event repeats forever: each occurrence has its own broadcast identity and schedule. YouTube’s live-stream scheduling instructions describe the Studio workflow.
Option 1: Schedule each occurrence in YouTube Studio
- In YouTube Studio, select Create → Go Live.
- Open the Manage tab in Live Control Room and select Schedule stream.
- Choose whether to reuse settings from an earlier stream or create new settings.
- Enter the occurrence’s title, date and time, privacy, and other event details. Review the scheduled event page and share it with listeners so they can find it and set reminders.
- Repeat these steps for each dated show in the series. Check the event details each time even if you reuse stream settings.
This is a practical fit for a small schedule or a station that wants a person to review each event. Reusing settings saves setup work, but it does not turn the event into a recurring calendar series.
Option 2: Create each occurrence with the YouTube Live Streaming API
The API separates the scheduled event from the incoming feed. A liveBroadcast is the event viewers watch; a liveStream represents the audio-video feed sent by the encoder. A broadcast is associated with a stream. For shows at different times using one encoder and the same feed setup, the documented pattern is to configure a stream, create a new broadcast for every dated occurrence, and bind each broadcast to that stream. The API guide explains the distinction between broadcasts and streams.

- Create or select the live stream resource whose settings match the station’s encoder output.
- Create a new broadcast for each occurrence, supplying its title, scheduled start time, and privacy status.
- Bind that broadcast to the intended stream, then configure the encoder to send the feed using that stream’s settings and stream key.
- Handle API errors, including account broadcast-limit failures, and verify each event’s details and stream association before the show.
The scheduled start must be in the future and within a range YouTube can reliably schedule; the API reference does not establish one universal scheduling horizon for all accounts. Do not assume a particular number of days or months is available everywhere. See the broadcast creation reference and plan the station’s API client to handle returned errors.
YouTube documents that one stream can be bound to as many as three broadcasts. That capability is not a requirement to run three events at once: for a single-encoder recurring series, reuse the stream for distinct events that happen at different times.

Choose stream setup based on whether shows overlap
| Station schedule | Suitable setup | Why |
|---|---|---|
| One show live at a time, same encoder and feed settings | Reuse one stream and create a separate broadcast for each occurrence. | The stream carries the feed; each broadcast represents a distinct scheduled event. |
| Two shows may be live simultaneously and need independent feeds or encoder settings | Use a distinct stream per broadcast or a stream for each recurring show, and configure the encoder for the appropriate feed. | Separate streams keep independent feed and encoder settings distinct. |
| Two simultaneous YouTube event pages intentionally show the same feed | Bind one stream to multiple broadcasts, within the API’s documented limit. | This is appropriate only when the events deliberately share the same incoming content. |
YouTube’s API guide describes these stream and broadcast patterns. Decide whether events need different content before designing the station’s stream setup.
Connect the radio feed and protect the stream key
The encoder sends the actual audio-video feed; scheduling an event alone does not supply the radio program. Check that the station’s automation or encoder can produce a feed YouTube accepts, including the intended audio and any slate or video. YouTube’s encoder guidance lists AAC or MP3 audio codec support and recommends choosing reliable settings for the available internet connection, testing with representative content, and monitoring stream health. Confirm the encoder’s output against YouTube’s current guidance rather than assuming a particular station system is compatible. See YouTube’s encoder settings and live encoder setup guidance.

The stream key is the credential the encoder uses to send its feed to YouTube. Keep it private; if it is exposed, use YouTube’s documented reset process and update the encoder with the replacement key. Compatible encoder software or equipment you already have may be sufficient. YouTube recommends professional-grade hardware encoders for higher-production-value events, but does not require buying one simply to schedule a show.
Preflight each scheduled broadcast
- Check the event title, date and time, privacy setting, event page, and intended stream association.
- Confirm the encoder has the correct stream settings and key, and that its audio output is compatible.
- Allow time for setup: YouTube’s published tips advise setting up encoder events at least two hours ahead and starting encoders at least 15 minutes before the scheduled event.
- Before starting the broadcast, confirm the preview appears in Live Control Room and YouTube reports healthy stream status.
- Test representative station audio and check that the channel or watch page is accessible to the intended audience.
- Monitor audio and video quality during the show. After YouTube’s event has stopped, stop the encoder.
These are YouTube’s operational recommendations, not a guarantee that a particular station setup has been tested. See its encoder event tips.

Account for copyright and reused programming
Scheduling a broadcast does not establish that the station has the rights to play its programming. Before each show, confirm that the station is authorized to use the music, recordings, spoken material, images, and any other content in the feed. A stream key or an event page is not permission to rebroadcast material. Review YouTube’s current rules and the rights relevant to your territory and programming; do not assume that material is safe merely because it is already available online or has been aired before.
Troubleshooting recurring-show problems
- The next show does not start automatically: Studio’s documented workflow schedules individual events, not a repeating series. Create the next dated event in Studio or have the API client create a distinct broadcast for it.
- The event is scheduled but no feed appears: Scheduling creates the event, not the incoming signal. Check that the encoder is running, uses the stream associated with that broadcast, and has the correct stream key and output settings.
- The wrong show appears on the event page: Verify the broadcast-to-stream association and confirm the encoder is sending the intended feed. For simultaneous shows, use separate streams when the feeds or settings differ.
- The API rejects a broadcast: Check that its scheduled start is in the future, that the request includes title, start time, and privacy status, and that the account has not hit a broadcast limit. The API does not promise a universal scheduling horizon.
- Stream health is poor or audio is missing: Check the encoder output and internet reliability, test representative audio, and review Live Control Room’s stream health before the event begins.
- The key may have been exposed: Reset it using YouTube’s documented process and replace it in the encoder configuration.
Or let it run in the cloud
If the station’s goal is a continuous YouTube channel playing uploaded recordings rather than a live feed from its existing radio encoder, StreamNeo is a cloud option: upload the recording or build a playlist, add the YouTube stream key once, and go live. It loops uploaded videos, not a camera or an encoder’s live radio input.
