No. Nintendo says the Switch’s YouTube app does not capture gameplay, and the console cannot send a live gameplay stream straight to YouTube. The standard setup is a docked Switch, a capture card, a computer running OBS, and YouTube Live. A Switch Lite cannot use this docked capture workflow.
What you need
- A Nintendo Switch or Switch OLED with its dock and AC adapter. The Switch Lite cannot be docked for this workflow. Nintendo’s play-mode guide describes which systems support TV mode; OBS’s console-capture FAQ also excludes Switch Lite from capture-device use.
- A computer that can run OBS and encode your intended stream. Performance depends on the computer, encoder, resolution, frame rate and scene complexity; a nominally compatible computer is not a guarantee of a stable stream. See OBS system requirements.
- A USB or internal game capture device compatible with your computer and OBS. Check its input resolution and frame rate, audio handling, connection type and whether it has HDMI passthrough. Passthrough is needed if you want to play on a separate TV through the capture device; not every capture card has it.
- HDMI cables for the connections your setup requires. Nintendo’s TV-mode instructions call for HDMI from the dock to a display. Check the capture device’s port diagram and your existing cables before buying extras.
- OBS Studio, a YouTube channel eligible to live stream, and a reliable upload connection.
Connect the Switch to your computer
The basic video path is Switch in dock → dock HDMI output → capture-card HDMI input → capture card USB connection → computer. Connect the dock’s power adapter as well. If your capture card has HDMI passthrough and you want to play on a television, connect its HDMI output to the TV. Otherwise you can view the OBS preview, but it may have enough delay to make it uncomfortable for gameplay.
Nintendo’s TV-mode instructions cover connecting the dock, power and HDMI display. The capture card’s manufacturer determines which ports and passthrough options are available. Do not assume every card provides passthrough.
Configure video and audio in OBS
- Run the Auto-Configuration Wizard. In OBS, use Tools → Auto-Configuration Wizard and follow its prompts. OBS uses your intended streaming use, computer and network conditions to suggest a starting configuration; you can adjust it after testing. See the OBS quick-start guide.
- Add the capture card as a video source. In the Sources box, choose + and add a Video Capture Device. Select your capture card and confirm that Switch gameplay appears. The available device controls depend on the card; OBS documents this source type in its Video Capture Sources guide.
- Check game audio. Play a game and watch the Audio Mixer meters. If they do not move, add or select the capture card’s audio input, then check that the source is not muted and the correct device is selected. AVerMedia’s GC553 OBS guide illustrates separate video and HDMI-audio sources for that specific capture card. Its device names and settings are not universal.
- Set the canvas and output deliberately. In Settings → Video, choose a base canvas that suits your scene and an output resolution and frame rate your computer can encode reliably. Do not select a higher setting just because a capture card advertises it: the Switch’s output and the capabilities of the computer and connection also matter.
- Check the full scene. Confirm the game fills the frame as intended, audio is audible, and any microphone or overlays you add do not obscure important gameplay. Make a short recording or test stream before a real broadcast.
AVerMedia’s GC553 guide lists Nintendo Switch at 60 fps as an example for that capture device. That is a reference example, not a universal requirement or proof that every computer, card or game will produce a stable 60 fps stream.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Prepare the broadcast using YouTube’s encoder workflow. YouTube describes encoders as appropriate for streams that include gameplay, overlays, microphones or cameras in its live-streaming guidance.
- In OBS, open Settings → Stream and select the YouTube service/account connection or enter the stream key provided through YouTube Studio. The exact interface can change, so follow the current labels in YouTube Studio and OBS.
- Keep the stream key private. Anyone who obtains it may be able to broadcast to your channel. Do not show it in a screen recording or share it in chat. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before streaming again.
- Start with a private or unlisted test if appropriate for your channel. Confirm the YouTube preview receives both picture and sound before making the stream public.
Choose settings your connection and computer can sustain
Set quality based on an upload connection that can sustain the stream, not on the fastest result from a single speed test. YouTube recommends checking connection speed and selecting encoder settings suited to a reliable stream. Its current encoder-settings page lists 17 Mbps as the recommended H.264 bitrate for 1080p at 60 fps; that is YouTube’s recommendation for that codec and output combination, not a guarantee that your home upload or computer can deliver it. See YouTube’s encoder settings.
- Use OBS’s wizard for a starting point, then test the actual game, scene, audio and network you plan to use.
- Include fast movement and sound in the test. A static menu is not a meaningful check of a gameplay stream.
- Watch OBS for dropped frames or encoding overload and watch YouTube’s stream health indicator. If the stream struggles, lower the output resolution, frame rate or bitrate and test again.
- Use wired Ethernet where practical. A speed test cannot guarantee that a connection will remain stable throughout a broadcast.
Meet YouTube’s age and content requirements
YouTube’s live-streaming guidance states that a user must be at least 16 years old to live stream. Review the current YouTube live-streaming guidance for channel and account requirements, which can change.

Only stream game footage and audio you have the right to broadcast, and consider music or other licensed material heard during gameplay as well as the game itself. Do not assume that owning a game or playing it live makes every use of its footage or soundtrack permitted. YouTube may apply copyright enforcement to streams, and copyright claims or restrictions can affect a broadcast or its availability. Check the relevant rights-holder terms and YouTube’s current policies before streaming. For a recurring workflow, use StreamNeo’s copyright safety checklist.
Troubleshoot common problems
- OBS shows a black screen: Check that the Switch is seated in the dock, the dock has power, and HDMI runs from the dock to the capture card’s input. Confirm OBS has the correct Video Capture Device selected. Reseat the connections and reopen the source if needed.
- There is video but no game sound: Check the Audio Mixer for activity, then select or add the capture card’s audio input. Verify the source is unmuted and its monitoring/output settings are appropriate.
- The picture appears on the TV but not in OBS, or vice versa: Confirm the HDMI cable is connected to the capture card’s input, not its output, and check the card’s manufacturer instructions for the correct passthrough arrangement.
- The stream stutters or drops frames: Determine whether OBS reports encoding overload or network-dropped frames. Reduce output demands if encoding is overloaded; lower bitrate or improve the upload connection if network delivery is the problem. Retest at the lower setting.
- Viewers hear echo or doubled audio: Avoid capturing the same game audio through multiple active sources. Check desktop audio, capture-card audio and monitoring routes in OBS, then test with headphones before going live.
- YouTube does not receive the stream: Check that OBS is connected to the intended YouTube account or that the correct current stream key is entered. Keep the key private; replace it if exposed.
- Switch Lite will not work with the capture card: This standard setup depends on HDMI output from a docked console. Switch Lite does not support TV mode and cannot be docked for this workflow.
How to choose a capture card
Choose for compatibility and the way you intend to play, rather than buying the highest advertised maximum. Confirm the following with the card’s manufacturer before purchase:
