Decide whether your chart describes the wearer’s body or the finished garment, label it clearly, show the fit, and explain how to compare measurements. For a resale product, get its chart from the supplier; for merchandise you make, measure each style and size.
Start by choosing what your size chart measures
A size chart can describe either the person wearing the item or the finished garment. Those measurements answer different questions, so label the chart prominently as body measurements or garment measurements. If you publish both, keep their corresponding points clear.
Body measurements
A body chart lists the wearer’s dimensions associated with each size. Customers who know their own measurements should use this chart to find the recommended size. Include instructions for how and where to measure, and make clear that the figures are body dimensions, not the dimensions of the clothing.
Finished-garment measurements
A garment chart lists dimensions of the sewn item, including the room and shape built into it. Customers can use it to compare the product with a similar item they already own. They should not compare a garment measurement directly with a body measurement: the two describe different things. UNIQLO’s customer guide makes this distinction and recommends using a similar owned item for product-measurement comparisons.

Build a chart for each product, not each label
Ask the supplier for the chart for the exact product if you resell apparel. If you make the merchandise, record the relevant measurements for every style and size. A size label does not guarantee the same dimensions across different designs: cut, fabric, and intended silhouette can change how an item measures and fits. Check each product rather than copying a chart across a whole collection without verification.
Choose measurement points by garment type
- T-shirts and knit tops: chest or bust, shoulder, body length, and sleeve are useful points.
- Dresses: bust, waist, hip, and length; include shoulder where it matters to the design.
- Pants: waist, hip, rise, thigh, inseam, and leg opening.
Use terms that match your construction and the method customers will follow. For example, specify whether a width is measured straight across a garment laid flat or around the body. A chart is only useful when the measurement labels and instructions describe the same method.

Show customers how to measure and compare
For a body chart
- Tell customers which body points the chart uses and where to place the tape for each one.
- Suggest a flexible measuring tape as an optional tool.
- Direct them to match their body dimensions to the body chart, rather than to a finished-garment chart.
For a garment chart
- Ask customers to choose a similar item with the fit they like.
- Have them lay it flat and measure the same points shown in your chart.
- Tell them to compare like with like—for example, a flat garment width against the chart’s flat width—not a garment dimension against their body circumference.
Methods can differ by chart. Biz Collection describes a half-chest method for its guide; Angel advises measuring a well-fitting shirt or sweatshirt from side to side below the sleeve join and matching the width column. Those are examples, not universal instructions. Publish the method that matches your own chart and product.
Describe fit and handle between-size questions product by product
Pair measurements with a plain description of the intended fit, such as fitted, regular, or easy. Biz Collection uses distinctions including fitted, semi-fitted, easy, tailored, and regular. Choose language your customers can understand, and make it clear which description applies to which item.

There is no reliable universal rule to size up or down whenever a customer falls between sizes. Give advice only when that product’s construction, supplier information, and fit notes support it. For example, a roomy cut and a fitted cut may call for different guidance; measurements and the stated silhouette should let shoppers understand the reason.
Account for measurement variation using information from your own supplier or production process. Tolerances disclosed by other brands are not general apparel standards: Angel states that its products may vary by up to 1/2 inch in either direction, while UNIQLO gives product-specific variation of approximately 1–2 cm and a different range for belts. Do not copy either figure as your store’s tolerance.

Make the chart easy to find and read
- Use consistent units. Shopify advises choosing the default unit for your store’s main market; show both units or provide a toggle where that helps your audience.
- Put the chart on the relevant product page. Customers should be able to find it while deciding whether to buy, not have to search elsewhere in the store.
- Assign charts to the right products. Check that each product page displays its own chart, particularly where styles have different cuts or measurements.
- Keep labels and values legible on mobile. A chart that is hard to open or read is difficult to use at the moment of choice.
A size-chart app is one possible implementation on a platform such as Shopify, but it does not verify that your measurements are accurate. Shopify App Store’s Smart Size Chart & Size Guide listing describes capabilities such as templates, unit conversion, customization, mobile presentation, and multiple languages. Treat those as vendor-listing claims, and confirm current features, price, and platform compatibility before choosing an app; the listing alone does not establish improved conversion or fewer returns.

- Request the supplier’s chart for every resold product, or measure each style and size you produce.
- Choose a body chart, a garment chart, or both—and label each clearly.
- Include the measurement points that matter for that garment type.
- Write instructions that match the chart’s actual measurement method.
- State the intended fit and give between-size advice only when product-specific information supports it.
- Use consistent units and place the chart where shoppers can reach it from the product page.
- Recheck chart assignments and displayed values whenever a product, supplier, or construction changes.

A short product video can demonstrate a garment’s silhouette and how to take a measurement, alongside—not instead of—the written chart.
