To stream to a custom RTMP destination, get the ingest URL and stream key from the destination, enter them in your encoder’s custom-server settings, then start the stream and confirm it appears in the destination’s live-control page. Use the destination’s exact protocol, URL format, and credential placement; these details are not universal.
Before you connect: get the destination’s ingest details
In the destination’s current creator dashboard or live-control interface, create or select the event and copy its ingest URL and stream key (or equivalent credential). Do not guess the server address or reuse another event’s values. For example, Twitch places its stream key in Creator Dashboard settings and warns broadcasters not to share it. Twitch’s Stream Key FAQ
Check whether the destination expects the URL and key in separate fields, or a combined URL. YouTube’s Live Streaming API documents an ingestion address and stream name; depending on the encoder, these may be entered separately or combined as STREAM_URL/STREAM_NAME. Follow the destination’s current instructions rather than assuming one arrangement applies everywhere. YouTube Live Streaming API: liveStreams
Set up a custom RTMP stream in OBS
- Open the stream settings. In OBS, go to Settings > Stream.
- Choose the custom server option. Select the custom streaming server service (the precise label may vary by OBS version).
- Enter the ingest URL and key. Put the destination’s server URL in the server field and its stream key in the key field. If the destination specifies a combined URL or a different field arrangement, follow that format.
- Set a suitable output bitrate. In Settings > Output, choose a video bitrate that fits your available upload capacity and the destination’s current limits. OBS notes that both matter. Its guide gives 6000 kbps for Twitch as an example, but that guide was published on 2021-08-25; do not treat the figure as a current universal limit. Check the destination’s current specifications. OBS: Streaming with XSplit Broadcaster
- Start and verify. Select Start Streaming in OBS, then check the destination’s preview, ingest status, or live-control page to confirm it is receiving the feed before you rely on the stream.
OBS’s overview describes the custom-server setup as using a server URL and stream key. OBS streaming overview

RTMP or RTMPS: use the endpoint the destination specifies
RTMPS is RTMP carried over a TLS connection. For YouTube, Google recommends RTMPS for ordinary content, particularly when low latency matters. A YouTube RTMPS connection requires a valid YouTube RTMPS ingestion endpoint and application name, the rtmps protocol, port 443, and a TLS connection. YouTube Live Streaming API: Ingestion protocols
Do not switch protocols based on guesswork: use the destination’s current encoder instructions. For YouTube workflows involving HDR or codecs unsupported by RTMP, YouTube documents HLS as an alternative when the encoder supports it. In that workflow, the HLS stream URL begins with https and already incorporates the stream key. YouTube Help: Set up your encoder for live streaming

| Choice | When it fits | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| RTMP | When the destination and encoder specify a standard RTMP ingest endpoint. | Exact server URL, port, path, key placement, and supported formats per the destination’s current instructions. |
| RTMPS | When the destination offers a secure RTMP endpoint; YouTube recommends it for ordinary content, especially low-latency use. | Secure endpoint, TLS, and—on YouTube RTMPS—port 443 and the required URL components. |
| HLS | For YouTube HDR or codecs RTMP does not support, if the encoder supports HLS. | Use the destination’s HLS instructions; YouTube’s documented HLS URL begins with https and contains the key. |
Protect the stream key
A stream key is a publishing credential. Keep it out of screenshots, public chat, and recordings of your settings. Twitch’s guidance is explicit: “Never share your stream key with anyone.” If a key is exposed, use the platform’s current refresh or reset process. Twitch notes that refreshing the broadcaster’s own key does not refresh guest stream keys, so manage authorized guest access separately. Twitch’s Stream Key FAQ
Troubleshoot a custom RTMP connection
- The destination receives no feed: compare the protocol, host, path, port, and credential placement character by character with the destination’s current instructions. Confirm you selected the correct event and its current key.
- The encoder connects but the destination shows no preview: check whether the platform expects the key in its own field or combined with the URL, then verify the event’s ingest or health status.
- YouTube RTMPS reports a certificate or TLS error: confirm the URL uses an RTMPS endpoint rather than RTMP. Check port 443. If both appear correct, inspect SSL diagnostics and confirm Server Name Indication (SNI) matches the connected hostname.
- YouTube RTMPS times out after connecting: the client may be sending cleartext RTMP to an endpoint expecting RTMPS. Confirm the encoder is using TLS and the correct secure endpoint.
- The stream starts but drops or struggles: compare the configured bitrate with available upload capacity and the destination’s current limits. Reduce bitrate if the connection cannot sustain it, then verify the destination receives a stable feed.
YouTube documents the RTMPS certificate, port, SNI, and timeout checks in its ingestion-protocol guide. YouTube Live Streaming API: Ingestion protocols
