The filter reports silence; it does not schedule episodes or switch files by itself. For a continuous YouTube Live broadcast, you must also provide a video track, configure a supported encoder output, and monitor the stream in YouTube Live Control Room.
What silence detection does—and what it does not do
FFmpeg’s silencedetect filter reports when audio stays at or below a chosen volume threshold for at least a chosen duration. It logs silence timestamps and exposes silence-start, silence-end, and duration metadata. The documented defaults are a noise tolerance of -60 dB and a minimum duration of 2 seconds, but neither is a universal setting: quiet speech, room tone, music beds, and recording noise can all affect what counts as silence. See the FFmpeg Filters Documentation.
Detection is only one part of the workflow. A filter event does not mean “close this episode and play the next one.” A controller or script must interpret the event and advance an ordered playlist, or the system can use known file boundaries to schedule transitions.
Choose how episode transitions should work
Use known file boundaries when the episode order is fixed
If each episode is a separate file and you already know the desired order, use those boundaries as the primary scheduling mechanism. This is generally more predictable than waiting for silence inside a file: a quiet pause in speech could otherwise be mistaken for the end of an episode. Silence detection can still help inspect recordings or make decisions about gaps, but it should not silently replace your episode schedule.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Use audio-triggered transitions only with a controller
If you want variable quiet gaps to trigger a transition, arrange for a controller or script to read FFmpeg’s reported events and advance the playlist. Treat this as workflow design around the filter, not as a built-in playlist feature. The exact implementation depends on whether episodes are files, separate inputs, or part of an existing audio source, and on how you supply video.
Decide what the audience hears between episodes
Choose the transition deliberately: move directly to the next file, add a fixed pause, or bridge the gap with a station ID or music bed. Silence detection identifies qualifying quiet; it cannot make this editorial choice. Decide how the controller should behave at the final episode, if a file is missing, after a reconnect, and during an intentional break.

Inspect silence before automating transitions
- Choose representative audio. Include quiet speech, pauses, room tone, and any music or other beds that appear in the actual episodes.
- Run an analysis pass. The FFmpeg documentation demonstrates analyzing audio with
-af silencedetect=...and sending output to the null muxer. This reports silence events and timestamps; it is diagnostic, not a live episode scheduler. Consult the filter documentation for the option syntax. - Review the reported timestamps. Check whether quiet speech or ordinary pauses trigger events, and whether the between-episode gaps you intend to catch are detected.
- Adjust threshold and duration. The documented defaults are -60 dB and 2 seconds. Change them based on your recordings and transition rule rather than adopting them as a universal preset.
- Connect detection to sequencing. Have a playlist controller interpret the events and choose the next file, or use known episode boundaries for scheduling. Validate behavior at the end of the playlist and when a file is unavailable.
The mono option evaluates channels separately. Consider it only if separate-channel detection suits your audio; the ordinary filter behavior and your channel layout should be checked against the FFmpeg documentation.
Configure the continuous output for YouTube Live
Silence detection does not create video or configure a YouTube broadcast. Supply the video track your stream needs and configure the encoder output separately. YouTube’s encoder settings guide lists RTMP/RTMPS ingestion; H.264, H.265, and AV1 video; AAC or MP3 audio; and frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), a 2-second keyframe interval, and says not to exceed 4 seconds. For stereo audio, it lists 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps as recommended advanced settings.

Video bitrate recommendations depend on codec, resolution, and frame rate. Use the matching row in YouTube’s bitrate table rather than treating one bitrate as suitable for every stream. Test with audio and motion similar to the planned broadcast, then monitor stream health in Live Control Room, as YouTube recommends.
Create the stream and protect its key
- In YouTube Studio, create or configure the live stream and retrieve its stream URL and stream key. YouTube’s live stream settings guide explains these settings, including options for starting or stopping the stream from the encoder.
- Enter the URL and key in your encoder’s output configuration. Keep the key private: anyone who obtains it may be able to send a broadcast to your stream.
- Test with a private or unlisted stream before broadcasting publicly. Confirm the audio, supplied video, episode order, transitions, and stream health in Live Control Room.
Troubleshoot common transition and stream problems
- A normal speech pause triggers a transition: the threshold or minimum duration may classify that pause as silence. Review the logged timestamps on representative audio and adjust the settings or use known file boundaries for sequencing.
- The between-episode gap is not detected: the gap may not remain at or below the chosen threshold for long enough. Inspect the recording and event logs, then tune the threshold and minimum duration to the actual gap.
- The next episode never starts: detection alone does not advance the playlist. Check that a controller interprets the event and can open the next file, or schedule transitions using known boundaries.
- The transition is abrupt or the gap sounds wrong: set an explicit transition policy—direct switch, fixed silence, or a station ID/music bridge—and make sure the controller applies it.
- YouTube reports stream health problems: check the encoder output against YouTube’s supported codecs and ingest guidance, use the recommended 2-second keyframe interval without exceeding 4 seconds, and monitor Live Control Room during a test.
- The stream cannot connect or the wrong broadcast receives video: verify the stream URL and key in the encoder against the intended YouTube Studio stream. Treat the key as a credential and replace it if it has been exposed.
