For a 24/7 YouTube loop, compare the monthly VM charge and the cost of sending the stream from the VM to YouTube. At YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrate for 1080p at 30 fps—10 Mbps—a 30-day stream sends about 3,017 GiB before protocol overhead. That exceeds the 1 TB transfer allowance on Akamai Cloud’s listed Nanode 1 GB example and DigitalOcean’s entry-level allowance floor of 500 GiB, so the cheapest advertised VM price is not the monthly total.
Neither provider’s published figures establish a single cheapest, like-for-like India configuration. Your result depends on the selected plan, region, transfer pool and any overage, as well as whether the server relays already-encoded video or transcodes it.
What the listed prices include—and what they do not
Akamai Cloud’s Asia-Pacific pricing page lists shared-CPU examples in USD. DigitalOcean says its Bundled Droplets start at $4 per month, with included outbound transfer starting at 500 GiB per month depending on plan. These are starting points, not matched configurations: the providers’ published entry prices do not establish equal CPU, RAM, storage, India-region availability, or transfer allowances.
| Provider and example | Published compute price | Resources and included transfer | India and billing notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Akamai Cloud (Linode), Nanode 1 GB | $5/month | 1 GB RAM, 1 vCPU, 25 GB storage, 1 TB transfer | Shown on Akamai’s Asia-Pacific pricing page; confirm the selected plan and price for the intended site in Cloud Manager. Akamai Asia-Pacific pricing |
| Akamai Cloud (Linode), Linode 2 GB | $12/month | 2 GB RAM, 1 vCPU, 50 GB storage, 2 TB transfer | Shown on the same regional pricing page; not a guaranteed India checkout quote. Akamai Asia-Pacific pricing |
| Akamai Cloud (Linode), Linode 4 GB | $24/month | 4 GB RAM, 2 vCPUs, 80 GB storage, 4 TB transfer | Shown on the same regional pricing page; confirm the exact plan and site before purchase. Akamai Asia-Pacific pricing |
| DigitalOcean Bundled Droplets | Start at $4/month | Included outbound transfer starts at 500 GiB/month; the allowance depends on the selected plan | DigitalOcean lists Bangalore among its data center locations. Bundled Droplets have monthly-capped pricing; v5 Droplets are billed by actual hours, according to its pricing page. Check the live catalog for the specific plan, allowance and Bangalore selection. The Akamai figures above are examples displayed on its Asia-Pacific page, not a promise that every plan is available at that price in India. Both providers offer more than one plan family, so match the actual resources and transfer allowance rather than comparing a single headline price.

How much outbound transfer does a continuous stream use?
In this setup, the VM sends one encoder feed to YouTube’s ingest servers. Viewers watch the stream from YouTube, so their playback is not additional outbound transfer from your VM. The estimates below use the configured stream bitrate continuously for 30 days; they are calculations, not provider measurements.
| Continuous bitrate | Approximate transfer in 30 days | Context |
|---|---|---|
| 4 Mbps | 1.30 TB (about 1,207 GiB) | YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrate for 720p at 30 fps |
| 10 Mbps | 3.24 TB (about 3,017 GiB) | YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrate for 1080p at 30 fps |
| 1 Mbps | About 324 GB | Rule of thumb for a continuously running feed |
These estimates use decimal network units for TB and GB and convert the totals to GiB where shown. Actual server bytes may be higher because of protocol and container overhead, reconnects, or bitrate variation. Use the encoder’s actual bitrate and leave a margin. Audio and motion can affect the bitrate needed to maintain the quality you want.
YouTube recommends H.264 at 10 Mbps for 1080p30 and 4 Mbps for 720p30, along with constant bitrate encoding and a two-second keyframe frequency (not exceeding four seconds). It also recommends RTMPS, realistic testing with audio and motion, and monitoring stream health. See YouTube’s encoder settings guidance.

How to estimate your monthly total
Use this formula for a first estimate:
monthly total = selected compute plan charge + max(0, estimated server egress − included outbound transfer) × overage rate
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Choose the stream settings. Use the resolution, frame rate and configured bitrate you intend to run, not just the source file’s resolution.
- Estimate 30-day transfer. Multiply the continuous bitrate by the hours in the billing period, then convert bits to bytes. The table above gives rounded 30-day examples.
- Check the exact plan and region. Record the compute price, CPU, RAM, storage and outbound transfer allowance for the selected India-region option. Do not assume an entry plan is available in a particular site at the displayed regional price.
- Subtract the applicable allowance. Count only the VM’s feed to YouTube, then account for any transfer shared with other workloads.
- Apply the provider’s current overage rate. Verify the final rate in the provider’s pricing page or console before committing, especially for Akamai, where the rate depends on service region.
DigitalOcean: account for the team-wide pool
DigitalOcean includes outbound transfer with Droplet plans and charges $0.01/GiB for additional outbound transfer, according to its bandwidth documentation verified on 14 September 2026. The included allowances pool cumulatively across a team’s Droplets, do not roll over, and cannot be transferred between teams. Calculate the team’s overall use: unused allowance on another Droplet may offset some of the loop stream’s transfer, while traffic from other Droplets may use the same pool. Inbound transfer is free. Details: DigitalOcean bandwidth billing.
Akamai Cloud: verify the selected region’s rate
Akamai says transfer overage depends on service region; the figures surfaced for its Asia-Pacific pricing examples do not establish one universal India overage rate. Check the selected service and region in Cloud Manager before calculating the final amount. Its documentation explains network transfer usage and costs.

Which India region should you choose?
Start with the nearest suitable data center available for the plan you need, then compare its price and transfer terms. Akamai identifies Chennai and Mumbai as core India sites and says they are optimized for the India market. It recommends Singapore or Sydney for workloads serving wider Asia-Pacific or communicating with Akamai core sites outside India. Read Akamai’s data-center selection guidance.
DigitalOcean lists Bangalore among its data center locations, but confirm that the exact Droplet plan you intend to use can be selected there in the live catalog. The available material does not establish matching India-region prices and resource sizes across both providers.

Will the entry-level VM handle the loop?
Transfer arithmetic does not answer whether a particular VM can run your encoder. A VM relaying or remuxing an already-encoded file has a different workload from one transcoding video. The published plan prices and transfer figures do not establish CPU or RAM requirements for your specific pipeline, and they are not a benchmark of either provider.

Before buying, decide whether you will relay a pre-encoded stream or encode/transcode on the VM. Check the software’s resource requirements, test the intended settings, and monitor CPU, memory, dropped frames and YouTube stream health. Do not assume that a low-price, 1 GB plan is suitable for every encoding workload.

A VPS loop needs an encoder or relay process that sends the media continuously, plus a way to monitor and restart that process. YouTube’s settings help explains how to create or select a stream key and enter it in the encoder along with the stream URL. Use RTMPS where supported. See YouTube’s live stream settings help and its encoder guidance.
- Create or select the YouTube stream. In YouTube Studio’s live stream settings, obtain the stream URL and create or select a stream key. Treat the key like a password; do not publish or share it.
- Prepare the VPS. Install and configure an encoder or relay to read the loop media and send it to YouTube. Ensure the process can run unattended and starts again after a reboot.
- Set the encoding parameters. Choose a supported resolution and frame rate, constant bitrate, and a two-second keyframe interval (never over four seconds). Use the applicable bitrate guidance for your target quality.
- Start a private or unlisted test. Check YouTube’s stream health, audio, motion and continuity before relying on the loop. Test through a reconnect or process restart so you know how recovery behaves.
- Monitor usage and failures. Watch VM resource use, outbound transfer, encoder logs and YouTube stream health. Configure a process supervisor or equivalent restart mechanism and alerting appropriate to your setup.
Copyright and YouTube policy checks
A 24/7 loop does not change the rights required for its contents. Use video and audio you own or have permission to stream, including any music, archival footage, images and documentary clips. A licence for a work may not automatically cover continuous public streaming, edits, or music embedded in a recording; check the licence terms. Keep permission records and respond to any Content ID claim or takedown through YouTube’s process.

Also consider whether a repetitive or reused stream provides enough original value for the YouTube policies that apply to your channel and any monetization application. Permission to use media and eligibility for monetization are separate questions. Review current YouTube rules in Studio and official policy pages; do not treat a working stream key as approval of the content.
When the cheapest advertised price is not the cheapest stream
- At 10 Mbps, the estimated 3,017 GiB in 30 days is well above DigitalOcean’s stated 500 GiB/month entry allowance floor and Akamai’s 1 TB Nanode example allowance. Calculate excess transfer against the exact selected plan.
- At 4 Mbps, the estimated 1,207 GiB in 30 days still exceeds those two example allowance figures, before overhead.
- DigitalOcean’s additional outbound transfer is documented at $0.01/GiB, but your bill depends on the team-wide pool and total usage.
- Akamai’s overage depends on service region; do not substitute an assumed India rate for the one shown in the applicable Cloud Manager view.
- Compute, storage, transfer and encoding capacity are separate considerations. A plan with a larger allowance may also have different resources and price, so compare the configuration rather than the allowance alone.
For either provider, prices and allowances can change. Confirm the current plan, region, billing behavior and transfer rate in the provider’s live catalog or console before purchase. Add other service costs only if your build actually uses those services.
