First decide what “sermon loop” means for your church: a playlist that repeats for each website visitor, or one continuous live broadcast of prerecorded sermons that everyone joins at the same point. The first can usually be embedded directly from YouTube; the second needs an encoder running on a server such as an AWS Lightsail VPS and sending video to YouTube Live.
Choose the kind of sermon loop you need
| Need | Better fit | What viewers experience |
|---|---|---|
| Visitors should watch sermons on demand, starting whenever they arrive | An embedded YouTube playlist with looping enabled | Playback is per visitor; the player repeats the playlist. Autoplay may be limited by browser settings. |
| Everyone should see a shared, scheduled channel broadcast, with live chat or notifications | A continuous live stream assembled by an encoder and sent to YouTube Live | Viewers join the broadcast in progress; the stream can have live chat and a YouTube archive. |
A VPS is relevant to the second option: it is cloud compute that runs the encoder, not a physical streaming appliance. YouTube receives and distributes the outgoing stream. If the goal is only a looping player on the church website, a VPS may be needed to host the site, but not to make YouTube repeat the video.
Option 1: Loop an embedded YouTube playlist
- Prepare the playlist. Add the sermons you have permission to show to a YouTube playlist. If you only need one sermon, use that video’s ID as the playlist value as well as enabling loop.
- Get the embed. In YouTube, open the video or playlist, choose Share, then Embed, and use the supplied player code on the church page. You can also configure the documented player parameters:
looprepeats a playlist, and theplaylistparameter identifies the playlist. For a single video, the playlist parameter must contain that video’s ID. - Test on the actual page. Check the player on desktop and mobile, and verify the loop behavior after the last item. Treat autoplay as optional: browsers may block it, especially when playback has sound.
This approach avoids operating an encoder and gives each visitor their own playback position. It does not create a shared live event, live chat or live notification. See YouTube’s player parameter documentation for the exact embed options.
Option 2: Broadcast prerecorded sermons continuously through Lightsail
1. Confirm YouTube Live access before the service date
Verify the channel and check that it has no live-streaming restriction during the preceding 90 days. YouTube says first-time live activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it well ahead of the intended launch. In YouTube Studio, create or select the stream and copy the server URL and stream key from the stream setup. Keep the key private: do not include it in public scripts, screenshots or source control. YouTube’s encoder instructions are at Set up your encoder for live streaming.

2. Select a Lightsail Linux/Unix plan for the actual workload
Estimate the encoder’s CPU and memory needs using the video format, resolution and encoding settings you intend to run. Account for local media, logs and the expected outbound data transfer, too. There is no universal minimum size established for every sermon workflow: benchmark the chosen encoder and content on the instance you plan to use. AWS publishes vCPU, memory, storage and data-transfer allowances for its available bundles in its Lightsail pricing and bundle table. Plan prices and available options can change; check the selected region and plan at purchase time.
3. Create the instance and decide whether it needs a stable address
- Create a Linux/Unix Lightsail instance in the region appropriate for your administration and hosting needs, selecting the bundle based on the workload estimate above.
- Use SSH for administration. If the VPS also hosts the church website, allow HTTP/HTTPS as required by that web-server setup.
- Attach a static IPv4 address if a domain name or other configuration depends on a stable endpoint. AWS documents that the default dynamic public IP changes every time an instance is stopped and restarted; an attached static IP remains stable. See Lightsail static IP documentation.
4. Configure the firewall narrowly
Allow only inbound connections the design needs, typically SSH for administration and HTTP/HTTPS only if this instance serves the church site. The encoder sends the stream outward to YouTube; do not open an inbound streaming port just because it is streaming. Lightsail firewall rules apply to inbound traffic, and IPv4 and IPv6 rules are configured separately. Review the Lightsail firewall and port-mapping documentation.

5. Install and configure an encoder, then start the YouTube broadcast
Choose an encoder whose current maintenance status and system requirements you can verify. This setup’s specific encoder, installation commands and CPU requirements are workload-dependent, so test them on the selected instance rather than assuming a command or size will suit every church. Prepare the sermon file or playlist, configure the encoder with YouTube’s server URL and stream key, and start its output. YouTube states: “To start streaming, enter your YouTube Live server URL and stream key into your encoder.” Then open YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room and complete the launch step there if prompted. Confirm that Studio receives the stream and that video and audio are correct before sharing the event.
6. Test recovery and plan for the archive
Watch the broadcast from a separate device or network and check audio, picture and stream status. Deliberately test what happens if the encoder process stops and restarts, and whether it reconnects to YouTube; a server snapshot does not perform this recovery for you. YouTube says live streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is a stated archive behavior for streams below that duration, not a guarantee that one live event can run indefinitely without interruption.

Protect the service and its content
Back up the server, but do not mistake backups for failover
Enable automatic snapshots for a Linux/Unix Lightsail instance if point-in-time recovery is part of your plan. AWS says automatic snapshots retain the seven most recent daily copies. A snapshot preserves machine state; it does not establish that the encoder will restart, reconnect to YouTube or resume an event. Test process restart and reconnection separately, and decide who receives alerts if the stream stops. Details are in Lightsail automatic snapshots documentation.
Check rights for sermons and music
Before broadcasting or embedding each recording, confirm the church has the necessary rights for the sermon, readings, music, backing tracks and any other included material. A church’s right to perform music in person does not by itself establish its right to rebroadcast or archive it on YouTube. YouTube’s copyright rules and enforcement apply to live streams as well as uploaded videos; review YouTube copyright basics and obtain appropriate permissions. Platform rules and the church’s licenses determine what may be streamed, not the VPS configuration.

What to monitor and how to troubleshoot
- YouTube has no incoming stream: Check that the encoder is running, the correct server URL and current stream key are configured, and the instance can make outbound connections. Regenerate or replace the key in YouTube Studio if you suspect it was exposed.
- The stream appears in Studio but is not live to viewers: Check the Live Control Room for any remaining launch step, then verify the event’s visibility, scheduled start and viewer-facing watch page.
- The picture stutters or the encoder falls behind: Compare CPU and memory use with the actual encoder workload. Test a less demanding output configuration or a larger Lightsail bundle; a plan’s published specifications do not prove it can encode a particular file smoothly.
- The VPS works by IP but the domain stops resolving after a restart: Check whether the instance’s dynamic public IPv4 changed. Attach a static IP and update DNS if needed.
- Administration or the website is unreachable: Check the Lightsail inbound rules for the relevant IP version and required port, and confirm the service itself is running. Do not expose extra inbound ports as a general fix.
- The encoder stops after a process or instance restart: Confirm its startup configuration and logs, then test the full restart-and-reconnect path. A snapshot is for restoring state, not automatic stream recovery.
- A sermon or music segment is blocked or interrupted: Review the relevant rights and YouTube notice. Changing the VPS does not resolve a copyright restriction.
DIY VPS or a cloud streaming service?
Lightsail gives the church control over its server and encoder, but the church is responsible for setup, workload sizing, monitoring and recovery testing. If the requirement is to keep prerecorded videos looping as a YouTube live stream without maintaining an encoder, a managed service is another route.
Or let it run in the cloud
StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add the YouTube stream key once, and go live. Its cloud keeps the stream running without a computer at church staying on. Each slot includes one always-on stream, looping and playlists, 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and support from the StreamNeo team. Uploaded video is streamed as made up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot rather than quality tiers.
