Both Linode (now part of Akamai Cloud) and Hetzner Cloud can host a virtual server that sends a continuous video loop to YouTube Live. Neither is a universal winner: the right choice depends chiefly on the selected region and plan’s outbound-traffic terms, whether you need to re-encode the video, and how you will monitor and recover the stream.
For a 24/7 stream, estimate transfer before comparing headline server prices. A 10 Mbps feed running for 30 days sends about 3.24 TB of data before overhead. At that scale, traffic charges and allowances can matter more than a small difference in virtual-server price.
Linode vs Hetzner: what matters for a continuous stream
In this setup, a cloud server runs an encoder or playback process and sends its output to YouTube Live. The server is not the broadcast platform: YouTube receives the feed, and the operator still has to configure the encoder, monitor stream health, and handle failures.
Compare specific plans in a suitable region rather than trying to pick a provider by name alone. Akamai Cloud (Linode) publishes plan-dependent outbound transfer allowances and possible excess-transfer charges. Hetzner describes included traffic and charges for additional transfer, but the exact allowance and overage rate for a particular plan and region need to be checked in its live calculator and current network terms. The available information therefore does not establish a general price winner.

- Choose on traffic economics if the stream will run continuously: verify allowance, billing unit, overage rate, and whether any monthly cap applies.
- Choose on compute fit if you will transcode, composite graphics, scale the video, or send multiple outputs. Simply repeating an already encoded file is a lighter workload than sustained video processing.
- Choose on operational fit by considering region, IP costs, monitoring, restart procedures, and the time you can devote to maintenance.
How much outbound traffic does a 24/7 loop use?
Traffic is driven largely by the stream’s sustained bitrate and hours online. At 10 Mbps for 30 days, the calculation is 10,000,000 bits per second × 2,592,000 seconds ÷ 8, or about 3.24 TB in decimal units before overhead. This is a calculation, not a provider quote or a guaranteed monthly bill.
Estimate using your actual bitrate and expected operating hours, then allow for audio, protocol overhead, restarts, backup feeds, and any additional outputs. YouTube recommends 20% bandwidth headroom over the stream bitrate, so a 10 Mbps feed calls for at least 12 Mbps of available outbound capacity under that recommendation. Headroom concerns capacity; it does not reduce the volume transferred by a continuously running feed.
Use the same assumptions for both providers
For each candidate plan, record the region, plan and quote date, currency and tax basis, included outbound transfer, billing unit, overage rate, and monthly cap or uncapped-hourly rules. Add the price of the VM, public IP, storage, backups, taxes, and any monitoring or redundancy you need. Rates and availability change, so check the selected plan’s current terms before committing.

Akamai Cloud (Linode)
Akamai’s core-region Linodes offer Linux virtual machines with shared or dedicated vCPU choices. Its documentation lists free inbound transfer and outbound allowances of 1–20 TB, depending on plan; excess transfer may be billed, and price and features can vary by region. Akamai’s billing guide also describes a policy change effective July 1, 2026: specified G8 dedicated Linodes, GPU Linodes, and additional IPv4 addresses are billed for actual hours without a monthly price cap. Do not assume the same cap or charging model applies to every Linode; check the exact service you intend to use.
Akamai identifies live streaming among workloads relevant to accelerated compute, but that does not mean an accelerated instance is necessary for a simple loop. If you are replaying an already encoded file without expensive re-encoding, start by evaluating a modest VM. Consider more compute only if the actual workflow transcodes, composites graphics, scales, or produces multiple outputs.

Hetzner Cloud
Hetzner offers shared-resource and dedicated-resource cloud-server classes. Its product information positions shared servers for variable or low-to-medium CPU use and dedicated vCPU plans for sustained high-CPU and production workloads. Listed locations include Germany, Finland, Singapore, and the United States. Public IP addresses are not included in the server price described on the product page; IPv4 has an additional monthly charge while IPv6 is free. See Hetzner Cloud plans.
Hetzner describes included traffic as generous and prices extra transfer, but the exact comparable numeric allowance and overage rate for a specific candidate plan and region are not established here. Use the live calculator and current network documentation for your chosen configuration rather than treating general product-page language as a cost estimate.

Set up the stream so the comparison is meaningful
Whichever provider you choose, size the VM for the work it actually performs and follow YouTube’s encoder requirements. YouTube accepts RTMP or RTMPS ingestion and lists H.264, H.265, or AV1 video, up to 60 fps, constant bitrate, and a recommended two-second keyframe interval that should not exceed four seconds. For H.264 at 1080p30, YouTube lists 5 Mbps minimum and 14 Mbps recommended. Consult YouTube’s live encoder settings for the current resolution and bitrate guidance.
- Choose the region and plan. Select a location suitable for your operations, then confirm plan availability, CPU type, outbound allowance and overage terms, and any IP charge. Viewer location alone does not establish which YouTube ingest endpoint your encoder will use.
- Prepare the playback or encoding workflow. If the file is already encoded and you are only looping it, avoid paying for sustained transcoding capacity you do not need. If the server must transcode, add overlays, scale, or create multiple outputs, benchmark that real workload before choosing a CPU class.
- Configure YouTube Live. In YouTube’s live-stream setup, use the stream URL and stream key provided for the broadcast in your encoder. Choose RTMPS when available for encrypted ingest, and keep the key private. YouTube explains the encoder settings in its live control room and stream-settings guidance.
- Set bitrate and keyframes. Use constant bitrate, a two-second keyframe interval where supported, and a bitrate appropriate to the selected resolution and frame rate. Confirm the encoder’s output matches YouTube’s current guidance rather than assuming a larger VM improves picture quality.
- Test and observe. Start a test broadcast, check YouTube’s stream-health indicators, and verify the video and audio before relying on a continuous run. YouTube recommends 20% bandwidth headroom and warns that network disruption can break a stream; see its streaming tips.
- Plan recovery. Use a process supervisor or equivalent restart method, health checks, logs, and a documented recovery procedure. A cloud VM does not guarantee YouTube will retain an uninterrupted broadcast, so monitor both the server process and YouTube’s stream health.
Calculate the all-in cost before declaring a winner
Compare a month of operation under the same bitrate, schedule, and region assumptions. A low VM price can be outweighed by transfer overage, and a plan’s advertised network speed does not prove a stable end-to-end path to YouTube’s ingest service.
- VM charge, including whether hourly billing is capped or uncapped for that specific plan.
- Expected outbound data at your configured bitrate, plus a reasonable allowance for overhead and recovery.
- Included traffic, overage price, billing unit, and any traffic policy or fair-use limits.
- Public IPv4 cost if you require IPv4, plus storage, backups, taxes, monitoring, and redundancy.
- Compute needed for your actual workflow, not a hypothetical transcode workload.
If projected traffic fits comfortably within the allowance and the VM sustains the chosen encode, compare the all-in quotes for the regions and operating requirements you can accept. If traffic approaches an allowance, resolve the overage exposure before choosing based on a small CPU-price difference.
