Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Start by identifying whether the problem is a slow or unstable connection from your Hetzner server to YouTube, or delay in what viewers see. Those are different issues and need different fixes. Check YouTube Live Control Room’s timestamped stream-health messages, compare them with encoder logs, measure upload capacity from the Hetzner server itself, and test the route to the exact ingest hostname YouTube assigned. Don’t move the server or change protocols until those checks point to a cause.
First, identify which kind of latency you mean
YouTube defines stream latency as the time between capture by the encoder or camera and playback for viewers. That is not the same as a delay connecting to YouTube’s ingest server, dropped frames, or an unhealthy incoming feed. YouTube describes latency modes in its live stream settings guidance.
- Connection delay: the encoder takes a long time to connect, times out, or cannot establish a session.
- Unhealthy ingest: YouTube reports dropped frames, unstable input, or another stream-health error.
- Viewer delay: YouTube accepts the feed, but viewers see it well after it was captured. This is playback latency, not necessarily an ingest fault.
Write down the exact symptom and when it occurs. If the issue is viewer delay, check the stream’s latency mode and buffering behavior. If the connection or incoming feed is unhealthy, continue with the ingest checks below.
Read stream-health messages and encoder logs together
Open the stream in YouTube Live Control Room and note the exact warning text and timestamps. YouTube’s health indicator can report errors such as an incorrect format or keyframe-frequency problems; see Live streaming error messages. At the same times, check the encoder’s connection and dropped-frame logs, plus CPU load.

- A format or keyframe warning points first to encoder configuration.
- Connection timeouts, disconnects, or dropped frames warrant checks of outbound capacity and the server-to-ingest route.
- High CPU load alongside dropped frames suggests the encoder may be struggling; compare its logs and resource use before blaming the network.
Use the timestamps to correlate symptoms rather than relying on a single warning or a general impression that the stream feels slow. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking the encoder and outbound connection.
Measure upload capacity from the Hetzner server
The relevant connection is the stream origin’s outbound internet connection. A speed test from your home or office in India does not establish the upload capacity available to a server hosted by Hetzner.

- Measure outbound upload from the Hetzner host while the server is under representative load.
- Compare available upload capacity with the total outgoing stream bitrate.
- Allow at least the headroom YouTube recommends: 20% above the combined primary and backup stream bitrates. YouTube’s streaming tips caution that download speed can exceed upload speed, so do not use inbound capacity as a substitute.
If the stream is near the measured outbound limit, reduce the configured bitrate or remove competing outbound traffic, then observe whether the health errors change. Include a backup stream in the total if you send one.
Check encoder settings and ingest protocol
Use an ingest protocol and codec combination supported for your workflow, then compare each encoder setting against YouTube’s current encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions guidance. YouTube’s guidance includes H.264, H.265, or AV1 video options, with audio codec qualifications; use the page’s current bitrate recommendations for your chosen resolution and frame rate.

- Bitrate control: use constant bitrate (CBR) as recommended.
- Keyframes: set an interval of two seconds; do not exceed four seconds between keyframes.
- Resolution and frame rate: select a bitrate that matches the combination in YouTube’s current table rather than assuming one bitrate fits every stream.
- Protocol: verify that the encoder and the YouTube ingest workflow use a supported protocol and compatible settings.
If the encoder reports a connection timeout with RTMPS, verify that the URL copied from Live Control Room begins with rtmps and that the encoder supports RTMPS. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS and documents port 443 for applicable SSL connection issues in its RTMPS setup guidance. Never share the stream key when asking for help.
Test the route to YouTube’s exact ingest hostname
From the Hetzner stream-origin host, run repeated route and latency checks to the exact ingest hostname shown in Live Control Room. Run them during the problem window when possible, and retain timestamps and raw output. Hetzner documents MTR checks for bandwidth or latency investigations and traceroute for identifying server data-center paths. These are diagnostic methods, not proof of the route or performance to a particular YouTube endpoint.

- Repeat the checks; routes can vary by source, destination, and time.
- Compare results taken at similar times and under similar server load.
- Do not treat one traceroute, or a high-latency intermediate hop by itself, as proof that hop is the bottleneck.
- If feasible, compare a controlled test from another host or network to the same ingest hostname, keeping encoder settings and test duration consistent.
If measurements show the Hetzner host’s outbound link is impaired, send Hetzner timestamped evidence and the relevant route output. If route and capacity measurements appear normal but Live Control Room continues to report ingest errors, provide the timestamps, warnings, encoder logs, and measurements through YouTube support. YouTube’s troubleshooting guidance recommends contacting the ISP when its outbound connection test identifies a problem.

Hetzner documents its data centers and connection arrangements, and lists Singapore among its Cloud locations; its data-center documentation and peering policy describe infrastructure, not the performance of your specific route to YouTube ingest. The available information does not establish that Singapore, Germany, Finland, or another location will reduce latency for a particular stream.

If you test another location, keep the ingest hostname, encoder settings, test duration, and measurement method the same. Compare timestamped stream-health messages and repeated route results before deciding whether the move helped.
Keep playback-latency tuning separate
If YouTube accepts the feed reliably but viewers see it late, review the playback latency mode in Live Control Room. YouTube notes that lower playback latency can increase buffering risk. That trade-off is separate from a slow or unstable route between Hetzner and the ingest endpoint.
HLS sends video in segments and has higher latency than continuous RTMP in YouTube’s documentation. Its segment duration is one to four seconds, with shorter segments lowering latency within HLS. HLS is used for supported workflows such as HDR or codecs not supported by RTMP; it is not a general fix for a poor server-to-ingest route. See YouTube’s HLS setup guidance and RTMPS guidance.
Troubleshoot common symptoms
| Symptom | Check first | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| RTMPS connection times out | Ingest URL copied from Live Control Room, rtmps protocol, encoder RTMPS support |
Correct the URL or protocol support; check YouTube’s port 443 guidance for applicable SSL issues. |
| YouTube reports incorrect format or keyframe frequency | Timestamped Live Control Room message and encoder output settings | Match supported format, CBR, and keyframe guidance; use the current resolution/frame-rate bitrate table. |
| Dropped frames or unstable health | Outbound capacity from the Hetzner host, full stream bitrate including backup, competing traffic | Restore YouTube’s recommended 20% headroom or reduce bitrate; compare health messages after the change. |
| Route tests vary or show a slow hop | Repeated MTR/traceroute output, test timestamps, server load, exact ingest hostname | Collect comparable measurements; do not infer the bottleneck from one intermediate hop. |
| Feed is healthy but viewers report delay | Playback latency mode and buffering behavior | Tune playback latency separately; do not change server location as an ingest fix without route evidence. |
Or let it run in the cloud
For a prerecorded YouTube stream that needs to stay live around the clock, StreamNeo is a separate cloud option rather than a route-diagnosis tool: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The service loops uploaded videos from the cloud, so no computer, OBS, or home connection has to stay on. Every slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card.
