There is no single best Linode region for every 24/7 YouTube livestream. Start with an eligible core region near the largest share of your viewers or near the services your stream depends on, then compare candidate locations with repeated measurements from representative networks. For an India-centered audience, Akamai identifies Chennai and Mumbai as core sites optimized for the India market; Singapore and Sydney are options to consider for wider Asia-Pacific needs—not universal livestream winners.
How to choose a region for a 24/7 stream
Linode is now part of Akamai Cloud. A region choice is a network and workload decision, not a YouTube ranking: the right location depends on where viewers are, where the stream originates, and where its processing, storage, and control services run. Akamai notes that proximity can improve connection speed, but network conditions and the actual path matter. Its data-center guidance cautions against treating one network reading as decisive. - Map the audience and workload. Identify your largest viewer concentrations and the locations of ingest, media processing, storage, and control components. These may not all need to be in the same region.
- Shortlist eligible core regions. Begin with locations near the audience or the services that matter most to the stream. For media work that needs substantial compute and storage, Akamai characterizes core sites as suitable for media storage and transcoding. Akamai’s infrastructure overview
- Measure from relevant networks. Compare candidate regions from locations and internet providers representative of your viewers and stream origin. Repeat measurements on weekdays and weekends and average three or five readings, as Akamai recommends. Latency alone is not a full assessment; include throughput and whether the workload behaves reliably over time.
- Verify availability and cost. Confirm that the required instance plan, storage, and other services are offered in each candidate region, and compare current regional pricing. - Choose based on the measured trade-off. Prefer a region that meets your workload’s service needs and performs well from the networks that matter most, rather than selecting by name or geographic distance alone.

When a distributed compute region may fit
Akamai lists live streaming among possible uses for distributed compute regions, which place suitable latency-sensitive work closer to users. They are not a drop-in substitute for a core region: availability is limited, a deployment in one or more core regions is required, only a subset of cloud features and services is supported, and a Dedicated CPU plan is required. Check current eligibility and confirm that every part of your workflow is supported before choosing this architecture. Do not assume all stream components should move to the edge. Separate ingest, processing, storage, and viewer delivery needs; media storage and transcoding may be better suited to core infrastructure, while a latency-sensitive component may benefit from a distributed location. Design for a data-center failure
Akamai says each region corresponds to one physical data center and does not provide built-in multi-site high availability. A region label therefore is not a guarantee that an end-to-end YouTube livestream will remain uninterrupted. For a continuous channel, decide how you will detect a failure, restore the stream, and—if necessary—move to a secondary region.

- Define monitoring for the services and stream output your operation depends on.
- Write and test a recovery procedure, including how to restore or redirect the workload.
- If the stream cannot tolerate a single data-center outage, plan a secondary-region design and test the recovery path rather than assuming regional redundancy is automatic.
- Recheck the availability of the required services and plans in both locations.
Akamai’s Compute Service Level Addendum version 1.2, updated February 20, 2026 and effective February 27, 2026, states 99.99% monthly uptime for covered services in general availability and 99% for covered instances in limited availability. Those commitments are subject to service exemptions and agreement terms; they are not an end-to-end YouTube livestream guarantee. - Picking by map distance alone: geographic proximity does not establish the actual network path or performance. Measure from representative networks.
- Trusting one ping or speed result: repeat readings across weekdays and weekends and use the recommended three- or five-reading averages.
- Assuming every service exists in every region: check region capabilities and plan availability before deploying.
- Treating an SLA figure as a stream guarantee: covered compute commitments do not promise uninterrupted delivery through YouTube or every part of your architecture.
- Choosing an edge location without checking constraints: distributed compute has limited availability, requires an existing core-region deployment and Dedicated CPU, and may not support every service your workflow needs.
