How to Schedule Different Video Playlists on a Hetzner YouTube Livestream

YouTube schedules live events; your Hetzner server schedules the matching playlist and sends its feed. Here’s how to coordinate them and test the setup.

Schedule two things together: create a separate YouTube live event for each programming block, then schedule the matching playlist to play from your Hetzner server at that event’s time. YouTube schedules the broadcast and receives the feed; it does not choose local MP4 files. For events at different times with shared encoder settings, YouTube supports reusing one incoming stream and binding each event to it.

Understand the two schedules

YouTube treats the scheduled event and the incoming audio/video feed as separate resources. A liveBroadcast represents a particular event; a liveStream represents the feed your encoder sends to YouTube. Each broadcast is associated with exactly one stream. The playlist selection and playback schedule therefore belong on the Hetzner server (or in the encoder), not in the YouTube event settings. See Google’s explanation of broadcasts and streams and broadcast lifecycle.

For non-overlapping events that use the same encoder settings, a single reusable stream can serve multiple scheduled broadcasts. Use separate stream resources when events overlap or need different stream settings. Plan the server-side schedule to start the correct playlist for each event and keep the YouTube event state coordinated with the feed.

Prepare one playlist for each programming block

Organize and check the media

  1. Make a playlist file for each block. Keep the intended order explicit in separate server-side files, so the job for each event has a clear input.
  2. Check playback before scheduling. Confirm the files play through in sequence and that transitions are acceptable. A concat-based FFmpeg workflow can be a starting point, but whether files can be stream-copied or need conversion depends on their actual formats and the output you require.
  3. Choose playout behavior. You can run a process for each scheduled playlist or build a persistent process that changes inputs. Test restart reliability, transitions, logs, and behavior at the end of a playlist; there is no universally established best approach for every set of files. A secondary FFmpeg concat playlist example is a reference, not a production-validated command for your server.

Create and connect the YouTube events

  1. Confirm channel readiness. The channel must be authorized and enabled to livestream. YouTube’s Live Streaming API documents permission errors when an account is not enabled or is blocked from live streaming; creating a schedule does not bypass those restrictions.
  2. Create a broadcast for each programming block. In the Live Streaming API, provide the event title, scheduled start time, and privacy status. Each event is its own broadcast, even if its feed uses the same reusable stream.
  3. Create or select the incoming stream. A stream’s delivery settings include frame rate, ingestion type, and resolution. Reuse it for events at different times when the settings are shared; create separate stream resources when the events overlap or require distinct settings. Follow the official resource guide.
  4. Bind each broadcast to its stream. Use the API’s liveBroadcasts.bind operation to associate each event with the intended stream. Check the binding before the scheduled start.
  5. Schedule server playout against the event time. Configure a scheduler on the Hetzner server to launch the appropriate playlist process. Verify that the process starts on time and that the YouTube broadcast is in the expected lifecycle state. YouTube documents testing and live states; test the complete flow with the actual media before relying on unattended operation.

The exact timer configuration, process supervision, restart policy, and FFmpeg command depend on the installed operating system, FFmpeg build, media, and ingest protocol. The general Hetzner server documentation does not establish a streaming-specific server size or a complete playlist scheduler recipe.

Choose RTMP or HLS deliberately

Use an ingest protocol supported by your encoder and configured for the YouTube stream. Do not mix requirements for one protocol with the other.

Choice What to account for
RTMP FFmpeg documents sending a real-time file input to an RTMP server. Confirm that your FFmpeg build, media, and YouTube ingest settings work together. See the FFmpeg protocol documentation.
HLS YouTube’s HLS guidance specifies TS segments of 1–4 seconds, a rolling playlist with no more than 5 outstanding segments, HTTPS POST/PUT, and no byte ranges. YouTube notes that segment-based HLS has higher latency than RTMP. These are HLS requirements, not RTMP settings. See YouTube’s HLS setup guidance.

There is no universal FFmpeg command for all playlists: the command changes depending on whether files can be copied without re-encoding, their codecs and dimensions, protocol, and installed FFmpeg build. Test the actual sequence and feed before scheduling a public event.

Size and validate the Hetzner server

Do not choose a server size based on the provider name alone. The workload depends on whether FFmpeg stream-copies or transcodes, output resolution and bitrate, the number of simultaneous jobs, and how much media must be stored. Hetzner’s reviewed general server documentation gives no streaming-specific CPU, memory, storage, or network prescription. Benchmark the intended playlist and encode path on the candidate server before relying on it.

  • Check that the media is present and readable when the scheduled job starts.
  • Measure resource use during the heaviest expected playlist or transcode, not only during an idle interval.
  • Verify that the server can sustain the outgoing feed and that the event is receiving it.
  • Test the scheduler, logs, and process recovery after a controlled stop or failure.

Check rights and account rules before going live

Use only videos and audio you are authorized to livestream. The API’s ability to create or bind an event does not grant rights to the media. Separately confirm that the channel is enabled and permitted to stream before setting up unattended broadcasts.

Troubleshoot common scheduling failures

Symptom Likely cause What to check
The event is scheduled but no video arrives The playlist job did not start, the encoder is targeting the wrong stream, or the broadcast is not bound as intended. Check the server scheduler and process logs, confirm the selected stream, and verify the broadcast-to-stream binding.
The API refuses to create or operate a broadcast The account may not be enabled or permitted to livestream, or the request may lack authorization. Check channel live-stream eligibility and API authorization; consult the broadcast lifecycle documentation for permission-related failures.
The wrong playlist plays The event’s server-side job points to the wrong playlist file or the schedule is mismatched. Review the event-to-playlist mapping and the exact input path used by the scheduled process.
Playback breaks at a file boundary Adjacent files may have incompatible formats or the concat workflow may not suit them. Test the transition with the real files; determine whether stream-copying is viable or conversion is needed.
HLS feed is rejected or delayed The HLS packaging may not meet YouTube’s segment, playlist, or HTTP requirements; HLS also has higher latency than RTMP. Check YouTube’s HLS requirements for TS segment duration, outstanding segment count, HTTPS methods, and byte ranges.
The job stops and does not resume Process supervision or restart behavior has not been configured or tested for the installed system. Inspect scheduler and process logs, then test a controlled restart before depending on unattended playout.

Or let it run in the cloud

For a YouTube channel that needs uploaded videos playing continuously, StreamNeo is an alternative to managing Hetzner, FFmpeg, and scheduled playlist jobs yourself. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud keeps the stream running without a computer or home connection staying on. It streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
