Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallFor a nonstop YouTube stream on Hetzner Cloud, monitor the Linux server from inside the guest operating system: run Prometheus Node Exporter, have Prometheus scrape it, and use Grafana to view current metrics and trends. Hetzner’s Prometheus/Grafana app image can reduce initial setup, but its components must be activated after boot. Neither a single CPU or memory percentage nor monitoring alone can guarantee that a stream will stay live.
What to monitor—and what the numbers mean
Hetzner’s provider-level graphs and metrics collected inside your guest operating system answer different questions. For stream-server resource pressure, Node Exporter exposes host hardware and kernel metrics, and Prometheus collects them over HTTP. Grafana can then display those values over time. See the Prometheus Node Exporter guide and Node Exporter project documentation.
- CPU:
node_cpu_seconds_totalis a cumulative counter, not a current CPU percentage. Use a rate over a recent time window to understand CPU time changing over time. Prometheus’s example israte(node_cpu_seconds_total{mode="system"}[1m]); adapt the expression and labels to the question your panel is meant to answer. - Memory: follow available memory over time and, when the relevant collectors are enabled, watch for sustained decline or growing swap use. A single reading is less informative than a trend alongside the stream process and other server workloads.
- Supporting context: filesystem space and network activity can help explain changes. Check the metric names and labels exposed by your installed Node Exporter rather than assuming they are identical across versions.
- Collection health: make sure Prometheus can still reach the exporter. A blank or stale dashboard may mean monitoring has stopped reporting, not that the server is healthy.
There is no source-established CPU or memory threshold that guarantees a healthy YouTube stream. Requirements depend on the streaming software, whether it encodes or relays video, the operating system, other workloads and the server size. Establish a baseline during normal operation, then investigate sustained loss of headroom, abrupt changes and service failures.
Choose where to run Prometheus and Grafana
| Setup | Initial effort and metric placement | Best fit and trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Hetzner Prometheus/Grafana app image | Lower initial installation effort. The preinstalled stack and Node Exporter are on the app server; components require activation after boot. | A packaged starting point for an operator beginning with one server. If the monitoring stack shares the stream server, an outage of that server can also interrupt access to its monitoring stack. |
| Install and configure the exporter and Prometheus independently | More control over configuration and placement. Prometheus can run on a separate monitor host and scrape the stream server over a restricted network path. | Useful if you already operate monitoring or have multiple servers. A separate host can keep monitoring available when the stream host is down, but requires network and firewall configuration. |
Hetzner documents its packaged image, including its post-boot activation requirement, on the Prometheus Grafana app page. The Prometheus guide describes configuring Node Exporter and a scrape target. A separate Hetzner Community tutorial gives a Debian-oriented example of exporter installation, firewall setup and target checks; it dates from 2021, so package commands and distribution details may have changed: Installation and configuration of the Prometheus Metrics stack.

Set up monitoring on a Hetzner Cloud server
Option A: start from Hetzner’s app image
- When creating a server, choose Hetzner’s Prometheus/Grafana app image, or provision it through the Hetzner API.
- After the server boots, connect over SSH and follow the activation procedure in the official app documentation. Preinstalled does not mean active automatically.
- Open Grafana and Prometheus only through an access method you have secured. Do not expose monitoring interfaces or credentials publicly.
- Confirm that Prometheus is scraping Node Exporter and that the target is healthy before relying on dashboard values.
Option B: add Node Exporter and configure Prometheus
- Install Node Exporter on the Linux host running the stream, using the official Prometheus guide for the basic flow. If the stream runs in a container, decide whether you need host-level or container-level metrics; a containerized exporter without suitable host access may not represent the whole server.
- Check the exporter locally with
curl http://localhost:9100/metrics. A working response includes metrics prefixed withnode_. - Configure Prometheus to scrape the exporter. The guide’s single-host example uses
localhost:9100and a 15-second scrape interval; these are example settings, not mandatory values for every stream. - If Prometheus runs on another server, set the target to the stream server’s private address and allow inbound TCP port 9100 only from the Prometheus host or trusted private network. Do not make the exporter endpoint generally accessible from the public Internet.
- Check Prometheus’s target health and last scrape error before building or trusting dashboards. The Hetzner Community tutorial demonstrates target checks; its package-specific instructions may be dated.
- In Grafana, plot CPU rates and available-memory trends, then add swap, disk-space and network panels if they help diagnose your workload. Verify actual metric names and labels against your server’s
/metricsoutput.
Tell resource pressure apart from a stream failure
Resource charts describe the server; they do not prove that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream. When CPU or memory changes near stream start, compare that time window with the streaming process’s logs and service status. Pair host metrics with a stream-specific health check or heartbeat if continuity matters. The sources cited here do not validate a particular YouTube health-check tool.

- Prometheus target down or Node Exporter unreachable.
- Sustained CPU pressure relative to the server’s normal operating baseline.
- Available memory remaining low or declining over time, or swap use growing.
- The streaming service stopping, restarting unexpectedly or reporting an error.
Choose thresholds and duration based on the actual server and observed workload. A brief spike can be normal; where possible, alert on persistence or trend. The monitoring documentation establishes the components and metrics, not validated YouTube-specific alert defaults.
Troubleshoot missing or worrying readings
| Symptom | What to check | Next step |
|---|---|---|
No node_ output locally |
Whether Node Exporter is running and listening on the expected local endpoint. | Check the exporter service and its logs, then retry curl http://localhost:9100/metrics. |
| Prometheus target is down | Exporter availability, configured target address, routing and firewall rules. | Check Prometheus’s target health and last error. For remote scraping, permit TCP 9100 only from the monitoring host or trusted private network. |
| Dashboard is empty or stale | Whether the target is being scraped and whether the dashboard’s metric names and labels match the installed exporter. | Inspect target health and /metrics output, then adjust the query to the metrics actually exposed. |
| CPU panel shows an enormous value | Whether the query graphs the raw cumulative node_cpu_seconds_total counter. |
Use a rate over a recent window, such as the example in the Prometheus guide, and ensure the panel’s interpretation matches its labels and aggregation. |
| Memory appears to be running out | Available-memory and swap trends, stream process behavior, other workloads and whether the change is sustained. | Compare the affected time window with process logs and service status before deciding whether to change workload or server size. There is no universal safe percentage established here. |
| Metrics look healthy but YouTube is not receiving the stream | Whether the streaming service is running and whether its own logs or an end-to-end check reports a failure. | Treat host metrics and stream delivery as separate checks; resource monitoring alone cannot confirm ingest health. |
