For a prerecorded YouTube channel, Wowza has the more direct documented file-to-live path; AWS Elemental MediaPackage is not the component that plays and loops your files. Wowza Streaming Engine documents publishing a video-on-demand file as a live stream and repeating it. MediaPackage is a live origin and just-in-time packager: an upstream encoder sends it a live feed, which MediaPackage packages for downstream playback. With AWS, you must choose a separate component to play the recording and produce a compatible live output—and separately verify how that output reaches YouTube.
What each product does in this workflow
AWS Elemental MediaPackage: packaging after playout
In AWS’s documented MediaPackage v2 live flow, an upstream encoder—such as AWS Elemental MediaLive—sends a live stream to MediaPackage. MediaPackage then serves packaged output through an origin endpoint. Its channel receives content from an encoder; its endpoint supplies output to players or downstream content delivery networks. The documentation describes live ingest, packaging, redundancy between ingest URLs, and resource scaling, not a file scheduler or playout engine. MediaPackage v2 lists HLS and CMAF as supported live input types. Its input requirements include at least one video track, with supported container and codec combinations and constraints. Check the current supported-inputs documentation against the feed your encoder will generate before building the pipeline: AWS: Supported inputs and outputs for MediaPackage v2.
Wowza Streaming Engine: documented file-to-live playout
Wowza Streaming Engine documents a procedure for publishing a VOD file as a live stream. Its ServerListenerStreamDemoPublisher can publish a file and loop it until publication is terminated. The guide describes controls for playlist repeat, publication duration, repeated publication, pause time, source stream, and playback speed; listed source formats include MP4, MP3, and M3U8. This is a server-configuration workflow, not evidence that Wowza is a hands-off consumer service: plan to configure and operate the server. Wowza also documents a StreamPublisher module for scheduled streams and playlists. The file-to-live guide points to separate scheduling and server-side publishing documentation; verify the applicable current guide and product edition before relying on a particular scheduling capability.
Wowza Video: a separate, legacy hosted-file workflow
Wowza Video’s guide describes streaming a hosted file through a transcoder, with looping and scheduled-start controls. The file may be hosted on a web server, Google Storage, or Amazon S3. However, the guide is explicitly labeled “Legacy” and was updated February 8, 2024. Confirm that the service and workflow are available for your account before choosing it. The guide also warns that a continuous loop overrides idle timeout: the transcoder keeps running and can continue accruing charges until you stop it manually. How to choose the architecture
Choose Wowza Streaming Engine when file playout is the immediate need
If you want the server itself to publish a prerecorded file and repeat it as live content, Wowza Streaming Engine has a documented workflow that directly addresses that part of the job. Treat it as a server implementation: determine where media files live, configure the publisher and repeat behavior, keep the service running, monitor output, and verify a separate compatible route to YouTube. Do not infer that the file-to-live procedure alone configures YouTube ingest.
Choose MediaPackage only as one stage in a larger AWS pipeline
If your design needs MediaPackage’s live-origin and packaging role, first select the upstream component that reads the recording and generates the live stream. Then confirm that the resulting MediaPackage output is actually part of a supported path to your intended YouTube ingest mode. AWS’s documentation of MediaPackage endpoints for downstream players or CDNs does not make those endpoints interchangeable with a YouTube encoder destination.

Use Wowza Video only after checking its legacy status
The hosted-file looping and scheduled-start controls may sound closer to a managed workflow, but the cited Wowza Video instructions are marked legacy. Check current availability and account support before basing a new always-on channel on them, and include a deliberate stop mechanism in operations and cost planning.
Validate the YouTube output separately
YouTube’s encoder help explains creating a live stream with an encoder and lists eligible encoder options, including AWS Elemental MediaLive. Follow the current setup in YouTube Studio and verify the account’s live-stream setup and ingest mode; an origin endpoint and an encoder destination are different parts of a pipeline. AWS published a specific 4K/HDR YouTube HLS example on April 14, 2021. It uses a MediaLive or Elemental Live HLS output group with a muxed MPEG-2 transport stream, H.264 or HEVC video, and AAC audio. It is a dated example—not a guarantee of current YouTube acceptance or a general MediaPackage-to-YouTube recipe. Recheck YouTube’s current ingest requirements and account controls before deployment. - File storage and access: identify where the recording or playlist resides and ensure the playout component can read it reliably.
- Playout and encoding: determine which service reads the file, repeats or schedules it, and generates the live output.
- Packaging and delivery: include MediaPackage only if its live packaging/origin role is required; document every handoff to the next system.
- YouTube ingest: verify the destination configuration, current supported formats, and live controls in the relevant YouTube account.
- Monitoring and recovery: decide how you will detect a stalled source, failed encoder, disconnected ingest, or stopped service, and who can restart it.
- Lifecycle and charges: identify which components continue running between scheduled broadcasts and how they are stopped. A continuous Wowza Video legacy loop can keep its transcoder running until manually stopped.
There is no like-for-like current total-cost figure established for these designs. Calculate the actual service plans and region-specific runtime, storage, transcoding, bandwidth, and delivery requirements for your channel rather than comparing product names alone.
