You need enough sustained CPU and outbound network capacity, a correctly configured encoder, room in your bandwidth allocation, and monitoring with recovery procedures.
For YouTube’s recommended H.264 settings, use 5 Mbps for 1080p30 or 6 Mbps for 1080p60, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted delivery and advises testing before going live. If you prefer not to maintain a server and encoder, StreamNeo is a cloud option for looping uploaded videos on YouTube.
What you need for a continuous 1080p stream
A Vultr Cloud Compute instance can run an encoder that reads a local video file, loops it, and sends it to YouTube Live. The exact instance size depends on whether the video must be encoded in real time, the codec and complexity, and the server’s sustained CPU and network performance. Vultr describes Cloud Compute as shared-CPU virtual machines; the available documentation does not establish a minimum instance size or guarantee a specific sustained upload rate for this workload.
Before choosing an instance, identify the video’s frame rate and whether it is already encoded in a suitable format. If the server can stream the file without re-encoding, its workload may differ substantially from real-time transcoding. Do not assume that a plan’s stated network capacity is a dedicated, guaranteed upload rate: verify performance on the selected instance under the actual workload.

Choose YouTube’s 1080p encoder settings
YouTube’s live encoder settings page, accessed in 2026, recommends H.264 and the following video bitrates. These are video recommendations; the full network stream also includes audio and protocol overhead.
| Target | Recommended H.264 video bitrate |
|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 fps | 5 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 fps | 6 Mbps |
- Rate control: Constant bitrate (CBR).
- Keyframes: Set a two-second interval.
- Ingest protocol: Use RTMPS for encrypted delivery where supported.
- Audio and network margin: Add the audio bitrate and allow more upload capacity than the video bitrate alone requires.
YouTube’s streaming tips recommend 20% upload-bandwidth headroom and caution that network disruption can break a stream. That recommendation is a planning margin, not a promise of uninterrupted service. YouTube puts the core requirement plainly: “Have enough bandwidth: The total bitrate you’re streaming cannot exceed the amount of upload bandwidth available.” See YouTube’s streaming tips and its live encoder settings.

Estimate the outbound data
At a constant 5 Mbps, the video payload alone is about 54 GB per day in decimal units, or about 1.62 TB over 30 days. At 6 Mbps, it is about 64.8 GB per day, or about 1.944 TB over 30 days. These are arithmetic estimates from bitrate multiplied by streaming time, not provider measurements. They exclude audio, protocol overhead, retransmissions, and other server traffic, so actual metered use can be higher.
Vultr says internet-bound outbound data counts toward bandwidth usage and inbound traffic is not metered for this purpose. Its documentation describes a 2 TB monthly free account bandwidth allocation in addition to instance bandwidth allocations, and an overage rate of $0.01 per GB after the applicable allocation is exceeded. Allocations and account terms affect the bill; check the current Vultr console and billing terms rather than treating the estimates above as a guaranteed cost. See Vultr’s bandwidth documentation.

Set up and test the stream
- Confirm channel eligibility. YouTube’s setup guidance requires a verified channel and no live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days. Review the channel’s live-streaming status before scheduling the broadcast.
- Create the YouTube stream. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the stream and copy its stream URL and stream key into your encoder. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it or include it in logs or shared scripts.
- Prepare the source file. Place the video where the encoder can read it continuously. Check available disk space if staging it on the instance; storage needs depend on file size and how long you intend to retain it.
- Configure the encoder. Set the intended resolution and frame rate, then apply the matching YouTube H.264 bitrate, CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, and RTMPS where supported. Configure the encoder to repeat the file if your goal is a loop.
- Check server capacity. Run the intended workload and observe CPU, memory, and outbound network use. If you are encoding in real time, confirm the instance can sustain that encoding workload without falling behind. Vultr’s guidance is to size Cloud Compute around vCPU, memory, storage, and bandwidth needs; it does not specify a minimum for this use case.
- Preview before going public. Use YouTube’s preview and stream-health indicators. Check that video, audio, resolution, and frame rate are correct and that there are no persistent dropped frames.
- Test recovery and monitor operations. Configure process restart and alerting appropriate to your setup, then test the actual source and bitrate for a representative sustained period. Watch YouTube stream health, audio continuity, and Vultr outbound usage. YouTube recommends testing and monitoring but does not define an endurance test duration that certifies 24/7 reliability.
The reviewed Vultr and YouTube documentation does not prescribe a particular looping command, process supervisor, or systemd configuration. Choose and validate an implementation for your encoder and operating system rather than treating an untested example as a proven setup.
Common failure points and fixes
- YouTube reports insufficient bandwidth or the stream drops: Compare actual outbound capacity with the full stream bitrate, including audio and overhead. Check for network variation under load, reduce the target bitrate if necessary, and preserve the recommended headroom.
- Persistent dropped frames or unstable video: Check encoder CPU load and the instance’s actual network performance. If encoding in real time, reduce encoding workload or use an instance that sustains it; if the source is already encoded, check that the encoder is not needlessly transcoding.
- The stream fails to start: Recheck channel eligibility, the selected YouTube stream, and the copied ingest URL and stream key. Replace an exposed key in YouTube rather than continuing to use it.
- The stream starts but has no sound or the wrong picture: Verify the selected source file and encoder audio/video inputs in the preview, then check the broadcast again after the change.
- The encoder stops and the broadcast does not recover: Check process logs and alerts, configure a restart policy, and test the recovery path before relying on it unattended. A restart policy cannot prevent every failure or establish an uptime guarantee.
- Bandwidth charges exceed the estimate: Compare instance metering with the video-only calculation. Audio, overhead, retransmissions, and other outbound traffic can raise the total; confirm the applicable allocations and current overage terms in Vultr billing.
Keep YouTube rights and channel rules in view
Being able to loop a file technically does not establish that you have the right to broadcast it or that it complies with YouTube’s rules. Use material you own or are authorized to stream, and check the relevant copyright and YouTube policies before scheduling a long-running broadcast. A successful technical preview is not a rights clearance or a guarantee about how YouTube will treat repeated content.
