Protect a Vultr streaming server by installing an SSH public key during deployment, allowing inbound SSH only where you need it, and denying other inbound traffic unless your architecture requires it. For a typical setup in which an encoder sends a stream directly to YouTube, use outbound RTMPS: YouTube’s connection does not by itself require opening an inbound RTMP port on the Vultr instance.
The commands below assume Ubuntu with UFW on a Vultr Cloud Compute instance. They do not assume the server is the encoder or an RTMP relay; identify what runs on the instance before opening service ports.
Decide what the Vultr server actually does
“YouTube streaming server” can mean an encoder, a relay, or a machine that supports another part of a streaming workflow. Firewall rules depend on which one you operate. Vultr’s Ubuntu-and-OBS guide is one deployment example, not a universal requirement to encode on a server.

YouTube’s setup instructions establish the encoder-to-YouTube RTMPS workflow; they do not provide a universal port list for every relay or streaming topology. Open a port only for a service your stated architecture runs.

Install and test SSH keys safely
Use key-based SSH access rather than relying on a password alone. Vultr’s SSH guide documents generating a key on your workstation, adding the public key during deployment, and connecting with the matching private key. Keep the private key on a device you control; never upload or publish it as the server’s public key.
Prefer adding the key during deployment
- Generate an SSH key pair on your workstation if you do not already have one. Keep the private key private and make a backup according to your organization’s security practice.
- When creating the Vultr instance, add the public key through the deployment workflow.
- After deployment, connect from the workstation using the private key, for example:
ssh -i ~/.ssh/your_private_key username@SERVER_IP. Replace the key path, username, and server address with your actual values; use the port option if SSH is configured on a non-default port. - Verify you can log in with the key before tightening access or changing firewall rules.
Important for an existing instance: Vultr warns that applying an SSH key through its console after deployment can wipe and reinstall the instance, causing data loss. Do not treat that action as a harmless way to add a key to a running server. Review Vultr’s current recovery and reinstallation guidance, preserve needed data, and plan a safe migration or recovery route before proceeding.
Set a least-exposure Ubuntu firewall with UFW
These commands are for Ubuntu using UFW. Other operating systems use different firewall tools, including firewalld, IPFW, pf, nftables, and Windows Firewall; do not apply UFW commands to those systems.

Inspect rules and preserve a recovery path
- Keep your current SSH session open and, if possible, have a second session or Vultr console access ready before changing firewall policy. A firewall mistake can disconnect you.
- Inspect the current state and rules:
sudo ufw status verbose. - Confirm the SSH port used by the server. The example below uses the usual port 22; substitute the real port if yours differs.
Allow SSH before enabling UFW
For SSH on port 22, add its allow rule first:
sudo ufw allow 22/tcp
If your SSH daemon listens on another port, allow that TCP port instead. Add web rules only if the server actually serves web traffic: for example, HTTP on TCP 80 or HTTPS on TCP 443. Do not add a streaming port merely because the host is involved in a YouTube workflow.

Once the needed inbound exceptions are in place, set a default-deny incoming policy and allow outgoing connections, which an encoder or relay may need to reach YouTube:
sudo ufw default deny incoming
sudo ufw default allow outgoing
sudo ufw enable
sudo ufw status verbose

Review the final status and verify a new SSH connection in a second terminal before closing the original session. Adapt the order to the existing rules and your recovery access; do not enable a restrictive policy until the actual SSH port is permitted.
Limit SSH to trusted addresses where practical
If you administer the server from a stable, known public IP, restrict the SSH rule to that source address. For example, on port 22:

Replace the placeholder with your public IP. Remove or disable any broader SSH allow rule only after testing a fresh connection through the restricted rule. A fixed-IP allowlist reduces exposure but can lock you out if your residential address changes, you switch to a mobile network, or you travel. Keep a working recovery route before narrowing the rule.
Do not treat a changed SSH port as the main defense
Changing SSH from its default port may reduce automated connection attempts, but it does not replace key authentication, source restrictions, updates, or a restrictive firewall. If you change the port, permit the new port in the firewall before restarting the SSH service, then test a new connection using that port before removing the old allow rule. Keep a separate session or console available throughout.

YouTube recommends RTMPS, which carries RTMP over TLS/SSL. In YouTube Live Control Room, copy the RTMPS server URL and stream key into an encoder that supports RTMPS. For an encoder connecting directly to YouTube, this is an outbound connection; it is not a reason to expose an inbound RTMP listener on the Vultr server. YouTube notes that port 443 can be specified if needed while troubleshooting SSL connection issues.

Keep the stream key secret
- Treat the stream key as a credential: do not include it in screenshots, public configuration files, or logs that others can access.
- If you suspect it has been exposed, reset it in YouTube Live Control Room and update the encoder with the replacement key.
- Use the exact server URL and key shown in Live Control Room; do not assume every encoder or relay uses the same endpoint configuration.
Test the stream separately from firewall hardening
Before an event, test the encoder-to-YouTube connection and monitor stream health. Firewall hardening controls network access; it does not guarantee stream quality. Quality also depends on encoder configuration and available upload capacity. YouTube’s encoder guidance provides its quality-setting recommendations.
Understand firewall layers and recovery
An operating-system firewall such as UFW applies rules on the Ubuntu host. A provider or network firewall is configured outside that operating system and may have a different scope and recovery path. The cited Vultr guidance here covers operating-system firewall configuration; it does not establish exact behavior for every Vultr console-level firewall feature, so verify that feature’s current settings separately if you use it.
If an SSH connection fails after a UFW change, use the Vultr console or another available recovery channel to inspect and correct the host rules. Vultr’s troubleshooting guidance documents UFW-related remote-access problems. Do not assume that changing an external firewall alone will repair a host-level rule, or vice versa.
Common problems and fixes
