For a continuous YouTube stream, compare DigitalOcean with Amazon Lightsail and Hetzner if you want to manage your own cloud server. For a prerecorded loop and minimal server administration, a managed service is the simpler category to investigate. For custom encoding, protocol handling or infrastructure control, a self-managed VM or stack may fit better. The cited sources do not verify current features, prices, archive behavior or program terms for other named managed services, so compare those directly rather than assuming they match a particular workflow.

Estimate the transfer before choosing a server
Transfer quota can be the binding constraint even when the server sends only one YouTube feed. YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends H.264 video rates of 14 Mbps for 1080p30 and 17 Mbps for 1080p60; its listed minimums are 5 Mbps and 6 Mbps respectively. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR), RTMPS and a two-second keyframe interval, with four seconds as the maximum. See YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate guidance.
Worked monthly estimate at 14 Mbps
At 14 megabits per second continuously for a 30-day month: 14 Mbps × 2,592,000 seconds ÷ 8 = 4,536,000 megabytes, or about 4.54 decimal TB. This is a calculated estimate for the feed, not a provider-published usage figure. Add audio and protocol overhead, leave headroom, and use actual observed transfer when sizing a plan. A lower bitrate uses less transfer but reduces image quality.

Do not multiply this feed estimate by the audience size: YouTube delivers the broadcast to viewers. A server hosting a viewer-facing service has a different bandwidth and scaling profile.
Compare allowances and overage terms
- DigitalOcean: Its current pricing page lists Droplet outbound transfer included starting at 500 GiB per month, with public internet egress overage at $0.01/GiB. The included quota depends on the selected plan. Check the exact Droplet before calculating the total. DigitalOcean pricing.
- Lightsail: Compare the selected bundle’s transfer allowance and the overage rate for its region. AWS describes excess outbound transfer as billable for instances and lists regional overage values that vary. AWS transfer terms.
- Hetzner: Check current plan and traffic pricing for the intended data center through the Hetzner Cloud API; no comparable current plan quote is established here.
Provider pricing and allowances can change. Compare total compute plus transfer cost, not just the advertised server price, and size for the feed bitrate plus network headroom.

What a self-managed YouTube stream requires
A VM does not create a YouTube broadcast on its own. An encoder—software or standalone hardware—must send the feed to YouTube’s Live server URL using your stream key. For a prerecorded file, the encoder must also be configured to loop or otherwise repeat it; a camera feed or generated scene has different source and CPU requirements. YouTube’s setup instructions are at Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
Setup and continuity checklist
- Choose the source and workload. Decide whether the stream is a prerecorded loop, camera feed or generated scene. Encoding or transcoding on the server requires different compute than relaying an already-encoded feed.
- Choose a VM and region. Compare compute, storage and transfer allowance for the intended bitrate, with headroom. Consider where the server is located relative to your control connection and YouTube ingest; the cited material does not prescribe a best region.
- Configure the encoder. In the encoder, enter YouTube’s Live server URL and stream key. Prefer RTMPS; set CBR and a two-second keyframe interval (no more than four seconds). Select a bitrate appropriate to the resolution and frame rate, and test the server’s sustained upload capacity.
- Protect the stream key. Treat it as a secret: don’t put it in public examples, screenshots or logs. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube’s live settings and update the encoder.
- Verify before relying on the broadcast. Check the connection in YouTube Live Control Room before setting the intended visibility. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; do not assume that statement guarantees an archive for a longer continuous broadcast. If an archive matters, confirm current YouTube behavior and make a separate recording.
- Plan operations. Arrange restart recovery and health monitoring; watch disk and log growth; keep software updated; and secure credentials. These are ongoing responsibilities of a self-managed server, not functions guaranteed by the provider plan.

How to make the choice
- Pick a managed service when your goal is to keep uploaded video running on YouTube and you do not want a computer or VM to remain under your care.
- Pick a cloud VM when you need control over the encoder, operating system or custom workflow and can handle monitoring, updates and recovery.
- Pick a streaming stack such as SRS when its added protocol or recording capabilities serve a specific need and you are prepared to manage the software.
For each VM candidate, compare maximum sustained outbound bitrate with headroom, monthly transfer and overage, compute suitability, location, administration burden and any contractual availability terms. An availability commitment is a contract with conditions, not proof that a particular YouTube broadcast will never interrupt.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does a 24/7 broadcast longer than 12 hours get archived automatically?
YouTube’s cited help page only states automatic archiving for streams under 12 hours. Confirm current behavior and record separately if you need a longer archive.
