A DigitalOcean Droplet can host an encoder that sends a continuous video feed to YouTube Live, so your home computer does not need to stay on. To set one up, create a Linux Droplet, secure access, configure a YouTube live event and encoder, test the stream, then monitor the server and YouTube’s stream health. The right region, Droplet size, and bitrate depend on current availability and your actual workload; there is no universally best configuration established for India.
What the Droplet does—and what it does not
A Droplet is a Linux virtual machine. In this setup, it runs the encoder process and sends video to YouTube Live using a stream URL and stream key. YouTube remains the destination for ingest and the platform that delivers playback to viewers.
A cloud VM lets the encoder run independently of your local computer, but it does not guarantee that YouTube will accept the feed, that playback will never stop, or that the network route will be optimal for viewers in India. The available official guidance does not establish an India-specific latency measurement, uptime figure, or tested Droplet configuration for continuous streaming.
Check YouTube eligibility before provisioning
YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the preceding 90 days. Enabling a channel to live stream for the first time can take at least 24 hours, so do this before planning a launch. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose a region, Linux image, and Droplet size
Region
DigitalOcean recommends choosing a nearby datacenter as a general performance and latency default. In the Droplet creation page, check which regions are currently offered, then compare network behavior from the location and users relevant to your stream. The available information does not establish that a particular India datacenter exists or that a named region is best for Indian creators.
Image and compute
Select a supported Linux image and a Droplet size from the options currently available in the creation page. DigitalOcean identifies video and live streaming as CPU-Optimized Droplet use cases, making that plan type worth considering if the encoder must perform sustained CPU-intensive encoding. It does not establish a fixed minimum size.

Actual demand depends on the video codec, resolution, frame rate, filters, and whether the encoder is encoding video or only remuxing an already compatible stream. Start with a configuration you can observe and adjust; monitor CPU, memory, and network use under representative load before relying on it continuously. DigitalOcean’s Droplet plan guidance and Droplet features describe the available decision factors.
The create page displays hourly configuration prices and totals. Availability and pricing can vary with current region and capacity, so check the live configuration rather than relying on an old example size or quote. DigitalOcean’s Droplet creation guide covers the control panel and other provisioning options.

Secure the Droplet before running an encoder
- Use SSH-key authentication. Add your public key during creation or configure it before depending on the server. Keep the private key private.
- Use a non-root account with sudo. Follow DigitalOcean’s production-ready setup guidance rather than doing routine administration as root.
- Apply a cloud firewall. Initially allow SSH from the addresses that need administrative access and block other inbound traffic. Keep outbound access available for system updates and the encoder’s connection to YouTube. Add inbound rules only when your design needs an exposed service.
- Consider backups and monitoring. Decide how you will recover configuration and notice resource or service problems before leaving the stream unattended.
DigitalOcean describes Cloud Firewalls as “a free, stateful firewall service for Droplets” in its production-ready Droplet documentation.
Create the YouTube event and configure the encoder
Protect the stream key
Create or select a live event in YouTube Studio, then obtain its stream URL and stream key. YouTube describes the key as password-like information used to route and accept the feed. Treat it as a secret: do not put it in public scripts, screenshots, or logs, and rotate it if you believe it has been exposed. See YouTube’s live stream settings guidance.

Set the video and transport parameters
Use the encoder settings supported by the selected YouTube stream and your encoder. YouTube’s current guidance lists RTMP/RTMPS ingest, H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 video codecs, and frame rates up to 60 fps. It recommends constant bitrate encoding and a two-second keyframe interval; the interval should not exceed four seconds. YouTube recommends RTMPS for encrypted transport. Confirm compatibility rather than assuming every encoder and stream configuration supports every listed option.
YouTube’s bitrate table varies by codec, resolution, and frame rate. Its listed H.264 recommendations include 10 Mbps for 1080p30 and 6 Mbps for 720p30; check the current table and its column labels before configuring a stream, since the figures are platform recommendations, not a measured India-specific connection requirement. Consult YouTube’s encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions for the current values and other audio and video settings.

Test before leaving the stream running
- Send a representative test feed. Use footage with the kinds of motion and audio present in the intended stream, rather than testing only a static image.
- Check Live Control Room. Confirm that YouTube receives the feed and inspect its preview and stream-health messages.
- Verify viewer playback. Check the channel or watch page and test playback on a mobile device, as YouTube’s live-streaming tips recommend.
- Observe the host under load. Check CPU, memory, and network use, then review YouTube’s health panel for audio or video problems.
YouTube’s live-streaming error guidance identifies incompatible formats and incorrect bitrate settings as possible ingest problems. The official guidance does not provide a complete service-manager or auto-restart recipe for a particular Linux encoder; validate any process supervision and secret handling for the encoder you choose.
Estimate the ongoing cost
A continuously running Droplet uses compute resources and outbound data transfer. DigitalOcean includes outbound transfer allowances pooled across a team’s Droplets; inbound transfer is free, and excess outbound transfer is billed at the rate on its current pricing page. The selected configuration, team allowance, and actual traffic determine the bill, so use the live account figures rather than assuming one universal monthly cost.
DigitalOcean’s pricing documentation listed excess outbound transfer at $0.01 per GiB when last verified on 25 August 2026. Check the current terms and your team’s pooled allowance before using that rate in a cost estimate. See DigitalOcean Droplet pricing.
