How to Transcode 4K Videos for 24/7 YouTube Streaming on EC2

A tested FFmpeg-on-EC2 workflow can send a 4K feed to YouTube, but instance sizing and 24/7 reliability depend on your actual source and recovery design. Learn the settings, test steps and cost factors before launch.

For a self-managed 4K YouTube stream, a practical starting point is FFmpeg on a GPU-backed EC2 instance such as the g4dn family, sending one correctly configured feed to YouTube over RTMPS. But no instance size or AWS benchmark can guarantee continuous service for your particular source: test the exact codec, frame rate, output settings and recovery path before relying on it.

First decide whether you need to operate an encoder at all. For uploaded videos that should loop on YouTube, StreamNeo runs the stream in the cloud. If you need a custom pipeline or control over the encoding host, this guide explains the EC2 approach and how to assess it against AWS Elemental MediaLive.

Choose the right architecture before encoding

There are two separate jobs in a live-video workflow: your encoder prepares and sends an ingest stream; YouTube then creates viewing formats for different devices and connections. You generally do not need to encode and send every viewer rendition yourself. YouTube says it automatically transcodes incoming live video into multiple output formats; see its live encoder settings guidance.

For a channel that loops uploaded recordings, consider StreamNeo first: it keeps a YouTube stream running from the cloud, at any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with the first day free. If you need to control the encoder host or build a custom pipeline, compare the AWS options below.

Approach What you operate Good fit when Cost and reliability considerations
StreamNeo Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded video in its cloud. You want uploaded video to run continuously on YouTube without keeping a computer or EC2 instance running. One flat price per slot for any quality up to 4K 60fps as uploaded; automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. See StreamNeo plans.
FFmpeg on EC2 The EC2 instance, FFmpeg installation and configuration, process supervision, patching, monitoring and recovery. You need flexible control over encoding or a custom input and processing pipeline, and can operate the host. Estimate instance runtime plus storage, network delivery, monitoring and any redundancy. An instance or benchmark result alone does not establish 24/7 availability.
AWS Elemental MediaLive A managed live-encoding channel and its configuration. You prefer a managed encoding service and its supported workflow fits your source and output needs. Charges depend on inputs, outputs, codec, bitrate, resolution, frame rate and features; packaging and delivery may add costs.

AWS has published FFmpeg benchmarks on EC2, but they are workload-specific observations, not an instance-sizing guarantee or a 24/7 service test. There is no matched current price comparison for the same 4K YouTube workload on EC2 and MediaLive, so choose based on a measured workload and complete cost estimate, not a claim that one is universally cheaper.

Set YouTube’s ingest profile

Check YouTube’s current encoder settings page before deployment; ingest guidance can change. Its current recommendations include progressive video, constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (not more than four seconds), and RTMPS. For standard dynamic range (SDR), it specifies Rec. 709 and 8-bit depth. Its audio guidance allows AAC or MP3.

Output profile Codec YouTube minimum bitrate YouTube recommended bitrate Keyframe interval at listed frame rate
2160p at 30 fps H.264 11 Mbps 30 Mbps 2 seconds (60 frames)
2160p at 30 fps AV1 or H.265/HEVC 8 Mbps 30 Mbps 2 seconds (60 frames)
2160p at 60 fps H.264 14 Mbps 42 Mbps 2 seconds (120 frames)
2160p at 60 fps AV1 or H.265/HEVC 10 Mbps 35 Mbps 2 seconds (120 frames)

For 4K HDR, YouTube recommends H.265/HEVC at 10-bit depth and says AV1 is not supported for HDR. HDR needs an appropriate source and full signal path; changing the encoder label alone does not make SDR footage HDR. YouTube also says 2160p cannot use its low-latency option, so plan for normal latency rather than assuming a 4K low-latency mode.

YouTube recommends RTMPS as a secure extension of RTMP. An AWS article from 2021 describes a specific premium 4K HDR workflow using HLS ingest and MediaLive or an Elemental Live appliance; treat it as a historical, specialized reference, not a general replacement for YouTube’s current RTMPS recommendation. See AWS’s HLS workflow article and verify current platform and service documentation before using it.

Prepare the source and EC2 host

Check the source before selecting an instance

  • Record the source resolution, frame rate, codec, pixel format, bit depth, audio format and duration. Check whether the source already matches the YouTube profile you intend to send.
  • Decide whether you need to transcode. Transcoding decodes and re-encodes media; remuxing changes its container or delivery format without re-encoding. A compatible source may need only remuxing, but confirm that its codec, frame rate, keyframes, audio and stream packaging are suitable for ingest.
  • For a loop, establish whether you will repeat one file or cycle through a playlist. Check that every playlist item can be decoded and conforms to the output profile; inconsistent resolution, frame rate, audio or duration can cause transition problems.
  • Choose a region and instance only after a representative test. GPU-backed g4dn instances are a candidate to benchmark for hardware encoding; CPU encoding may also work, depending on the source and target. The available benchmark does not establish the smallest or cheapest instance for your workload.

Install and validate the encoder

Install an FFmpeg build appropriate to the EC2 operating system and encoding path. If using NVIDIA hardware encoding, verify that the instance, driver and FFmpeg build can see the GPU encoder; do not assume that installing FFmpeg alone enables it. Run ffmpeg -encoders and inspect the available encoders, then test the exact codec, pixel format and rate-control options you plan to use.

Allow for source reads, output processing, logs and operating-system needs in disk planning. Keep the YouTube stream key out of source code, public logs and shared shell history. Restrict access to the host and store credentials with access controls suitable for your environment.

Build a representative FFmpeg test

The following is an illustrative H.264 SDR example for one 3840×2160, 30 fps source file. Replace the input path and RTMPS endpoint with values from your environment and YouTube Live Control Room. Confirm that the installed FFmpeg build accepts the options and that the source is actually 4K at the intended frame rate. This example is not a validated production command or a guarantee that a particular EC2 instance can sustain the encode.

ffmpeg -re -stream_loop -1 -i /path/to/video.mp4
  -map 0:v:0 -map 0:a?
  -c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -pix_fmt yuv420p
  -r 30 -b:v 30M -minrate 30M -maxrate 30M -bufsize 60M
  -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
  -f flv "rtmps://YOUR_YOUTUBE_INGEST_ENDPOINT/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"

The command requests real-time input pacing, repeats the file, maps the first video stream and optional audio, and encodes an H.264 output with a two-second keyframe interval at 30 fps. The 30 Mbps video rate is YouTube’s recommended H.264 rate for 2160p30, not a bitrate guarantee for every source. For a 2160p60 H.264 profile, YouTube lists 42 Mbps and a two-second interval corresponds to 120 frames; adapt the frame-rate and keyframe settings together. Do not simply change the frame-rate flag if the source has a different cadence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For H.265/HEVC, HDR, or GPU encoding, use options supported by your installed encoder and preserve the source’s intended color and bit-depth characteristics. The example’s H.264 and 8-bit pixel format are not an HDR configuration. If the input lacks audio, the optional audio map avoids requiring an audio stream; confirm the resulting output is accepted and behaves as intended. A playlist requires its own input and looping strategy rather than assuming one-file looping handles all transitions.

Verify ingest before leaving it unattended

  1. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select the live stream, copy its RTMPS ingest details, and keep the stream key private. Start a test with the same resolution, frame rate, audio and motion profile planned for continuous use.
  2. Run FFmpeg and inspect its output for connection errors, encoder lag, dropped frames, timestamp warnings and repeated reconnects. Check YouTube’s stream health and messages as well as the local process.
  3. Let a representative test run long enough to reveal thermal, memory, disk, network and source-read problems. A brief successful preview does not demonstrate continuous operation.
  4. Test the actual loop or playlist transition, including the end of a file and the start of the next one. Confirm that audio and video remain synchronized and that YouTube continues to show a healthy ingest.
  5. Only after the test is stable should you set up unattended operation, alerting and recovery procedures.

Keep the process running and make failures visible

For a continuous stream, FFmpeg needs process supervision rather than a shell session that disappears when you disconnect. Use systemd or an equivalent supervisor to start the service at boot, restart it after an unexpected exit and retain logs. Supervision can recover a crashed process, but it cannot by itself guarantee a healthy source, successful YouTube ingest or a specific uptime target.

  • Monitor: process state, CPU and GPU use, encoder lag, dropped frames, network connectivity, disk space, source availability and YouTube stream health.
  • Alert: on a stopped process, repeated reconnects, sustained lag, low disk space, missing source files or unhealthy ingest. Route alerts somewhere an operator will see them.
  • Recover: document how to check the source, credentials, network route and FFmpeg log; restart the process; confirm YouTube receives video and audio; and escalate if the fault recurs.
  • Protect: limit who can read the stream key and host credentials, keep operating-system and encoder updates planned, and test changes before applying them to the live service.

A single EC2 encoder is a single point of failure unless your architecture addresses it. If availability matters, design and test the intended recovery or failover behavior, including how a replacement encoder obtains the source and starts an ingest. The AWS benchmark and YouTube’s test advice do not prove a particular design will meet an uptime target.

Estimate the full recurring cost

For EC2, estimate the actual region and instance type for the required runtime, plus source storage and reads, network egress or viewer delivery, logs and metrics, and any standby or failover resources. A typical month is about 730 hours, but the number of hours depends on the month. Include all recurring components in the same estimate rather than comparing only the encoder’s hourly compute charge.

AWS’s published FFmpeg benchmark reported that g4dn instances sustained up to four parallel live encodings in its tested workload, converting 4K into five lower-resolution outputs. That workload does not establish performance for a single 4K output, different codec or source, or continuous service. AWS also published historical hourly figures for benchmark instances; do not use those as current EC2 prices. Reproduce a relevant test in your chosen region and configuration.

MediaLive pricing is configuration-dependent. AWS’s pricing page gives an example totaling $21.791 per hour for one UHD input and six outputs (three AVC and three HEVC) in US East (N. Virginia), with a ten-minute minimum. That is a published example, not a quote or like-for-like comparison for a single 4K feed to YouTube. Check the current MediaLive pricing page for your configuration.

Viewer delivery can outweigh encoding costs when you operate your own distribution stack. AWS’s Live Streaming on AWS planning guide illustrates a one-hour event at approximately 1,000 viewers totaling $69.74. It assumes a 540p SD profile, US East (N. Virginia), viewers consuming the highest bitrate and a 99% CDN cache-hit ratio; most of the example total is CloudFront distribution. It is not a 4K EC2 estimate or a current quote. YouTube’s automatic transcoding and delivery make that AWS architecture example distinct from the cost of sending an ingest feed to YouTube.

Use AWS Budgets and Cost Explorer to track the services in your design, and confirm regional service availability and current pricing before launch. AWS notes that prices can change.
