Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFor an always-on YouTube channel built from prerecorded videos, MediaPackage is usually the wrong component to replace. AWS Elemental MediaPackage packages and originates an incoming stream for playback through a player or CDN; it does not, by itself, play a video library and send a continuous live feed to YouTube. For that job, consider a cloud playout service such as StreamNeo, Gyre, or Upstream. If you need an AWS encoder for a live feed, compare MediaLive; if your workflow needs packaging for wider distribution, MediaPackage may still belong in it.
Why MediaPackage is not a direct substitute for a 24/7 YouTube playout service
AWS describes Elemental MediaPackage as a just-in-time video packaging and origination service. In a typical live workflow, an upstream encoder sends it a feed; a player or CDN requests output, and MediaPackage packages that output according to endpoint settings. Its role is to prepare and serve video for playback, not to choose and loop prerecorded videos as a YouTube live channel.
MediaPackage v2 accepts HLS from an upstream encoder. It can use redundant input URLs and switch to the other input if the active input stops, but this is redundancy at the ingest/origin layer. It does not establish an end-to-end guarantee that a continuous YouTube stream will stay live. See AWS Elemental MediaPackage documentation and AWS MediaPackage live ingest documentation.
The practical question is which job you need done: continuous cloud playback of a prerecorded library, live encoding, packaging for a playback service, or a dedicated physical encoder.

3. Upstream — cloud studio for continuous streaming
YouTube lists Upstream as a 24/7 cloud streaming studio. Upstream describes a workflow in which you upload videos, order a continuous stream, and let cloud playback continue while your computer is off. Its pricing page, accessed in 2026, listed a free plan limited to one concurrent stream and 24 streaming hours per month, plus a one-stream plan at $30 per month for 1080p/30fps with monthly billing. These are vendor-published plan details and can change; confirm the current limits and price directly.
4. AWS Elemental MediaLive — AWS’s closer comparison for live encoding
If your source is a live camera or production feed and the need is encoding rather than packaging, MediaLive is the more relevant AWS comparison. YouTube lists MediaLive among its verified software encoders and describes it as broadcast-grade live video processing. In AWS’s CloudFront live architecture, MediaLive encodes the live feed; MediaPackage is a later packaging step when multiple delivery formats are required. MediaLive is not, on the evidence here, a prerecorded-library playout service for a 24/7 YouTube channel.

Choose by source, infrastructure, and distribution needs
- Prerecorded library, no machine kept running: compare cloud playout services. StreamNeo is #1 for this use case: it runs from the cloud, supports uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and offers a free first day.
- Live camera or production feed: choose an encoder workflow. MediaLive is the AWS option in the verified encoder list; a physical encoder such as HELO Plus is another route if local appliance hardware suits the setup.
- Multiple playback formats or CDN/origin delivery: MediaPackage may be useful downstream of an encoder. AWS’s CloudFront video architecture also names Wowza and Unified Streaming, but that does not establish them as direct replacements for cloud 24/7 YouTube playout.
- Many channels or a reliability-sensitive operation: verify simultaneous-stream limits, monitoring, recovery behavior, scheduling controls, support, and the full cost at your intended scale with each provider. Do not treat MediaPackage’s redundant inputs as proof of end-to-end YouTube continuity.
Operational checks before you move a channel
Confirm that the workflow matches the content
Determine whether the source is a live feed or a library of prerecorded videos. A live encoder, a packaging/origin service, and a cloud playout service solve different stages of a video workflow; choosing by the word “streaming” alone can leave the actual playout job uncovered.
Check YouTube ingest and channel readiness
Use YouTube’s current live-stream setup requirements and the selected service’s current instructions for creating or selecting a stream, copying the stream key, and connecting it. Keep the key private; anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to the associated stream. Follow YouTube’s current copyright rules and monetization policies: permission to upload a video does not automatically establish the right to rebroadcast it continuously, and repeated or reused material may be subject to YouTube policy review.
Test the full path before relying on it
- Run a short private or unlisted test and confirm the intended video, audio, aspect ratio, and playback quality.
- Check whether the service’s playlist behavior, ordering, and restart behavior match your channel plan.
- Know what alerts or monitoring are available and what happens if YouTube disconnects the stream.
- For an AWS architecture, test encoder-to-ingest, packaging, and playback separately; redundancy at one stage does not prove all stages recover automatically.
Costs and scale
Compare the whole operating setup, not just a service’s headline plan: number of simultaneous channels, desired resolution and frame rate, storage, stream duration, local hardware and power, and the labor needed to monitor failures. Cloud plans can change, and a per-stream price may not cover the number of concurrent channels you need. For AWS, the cited architecture documentation establishes component roles, not a comparable current total cost for a specific YouTube channel; calculate against your own AWS configuration and usage.
