Vultr Cloud Compute: Set Up OBS to Loop Pre-Recorded Videos 24/7

A practical guide to hosting OBS on Vultr, uploading media, looping a video or playlist, and verifying a YouTube stream.

You can keep a YouTube stream running from pre-recorded video by hosting OBS on a Vultr server, uploading your media to that server, and configuring OBS to loop a clip or playlist. Vultr documents two routes: its preconfigured Broadcaster Marketplace app, which you access in a browser, and a self-managed Ubuntu server, which requires installing and configuring OBS yourself.

Choose a Vultr setup route

Route How you access OBS What you manage
Vultr Broadcaster Marketplace app Browser-accessible OBS deployment Use the preconfigured deployment, retain its generated web password, and configure your media and stream destination. Vultr’s guide was updated 25 July 2024. Vultr setup guide.
Ubuntu with OBS Remote desktop Install and configure Ubuntu, OBS Studio, and FFmpeg, then manage server resources and streaming settings. Vultr’s guide was updated 1 April 2025. Vultr setup guide.

The Marketplace app is the more preconfigured option; the Ubuntu route gives you responsibility for installing and configuring the stack. The guides do not establish a current price or measured reliability comparison between them. Vultr also documents using Broadcaster with Owncast, but that destination pattern is not needed for a YouTube stream: Vultr’s Owncast guide.

Before you deploy

Prepare the stream destination

Create or configure a live stream on YouTube and obtain its stream key and, if required by your chosen OBS workflow, stream URL. Treat the key like a password: anyone who has it may be able to broadcast to your channel. Keep it private and enter it only in the OBS destination settings.

Size the Ubuntu server for the tutorial

For its Ubuntu tutorial, Vultr specifies a baseline of at least 2 vCPUs, 4 GB RAM, 80 GB storage, and 3 TB bandwidth. The same guide suggests 720p (1280 × 720) for a server with two or more vCPUs. These are Vultr’s tutorial recommendations, not a guarantee that every workload will run smoothly; higher resolution and frame rate increase processing demands. Check current YouTube requirements and your stream’s settings before choosing output values.

Plan storage and transfer

Your video files must be available on the remote server while OBS is broadcasting. Vultr describes transferring files with SFTP, FTP, SCP, or Rsync. Allow enough disk space for the media you intend to keep there, and consider upload time before planning a launch.

Deploy the Broadcaster Marketplace app

  1. Deploy the app in Vultr. Select the Broadcaster Marketplace app and complete the deployment in your Vultr account. Marketplace availability can vary; confirm it is offered for the location and configuration you intend to use.
  2. Save the generated OBS web password. Keep it in a password manager or another secure place. Do not share it or expose the browser interface publicly without appropriate protection.
  3. Open the remote OBS interface. Use the deployment’s browser-accessible OBS access details and sign in with the generated password.
  4. Upload your video files. Transfer them to the server using a method such as SFTP, FTP, SCP, or Rsync. For a 24/7 stream, Vultr’s guide says to upload the source files to the server.
  5. Add the media source. In OBS, add a Media Source, browse to the uploaded file, and enable Loop for a single video. For multiple files, use the VLC Video Source and configure the playlist.
  6. Set the stream destination. In OBS streaming settings, choose the destination service or custom server details and enter the stream key. Confirm the selected service and destination URL are correct before going live.
  7. Preview and start output. Confirm that the video plays in the OBS preview and that the Audio Mixer registers the source. Start streaming, then check YouTube Studio to confirm that YouTube receives the stream and that the live video and audio appear as expected.

Set up OBS on Ubuntu instead

  1. Deploy Ubuntu to Vultr. For the baseline in Vultr’s tutorial, provision at least 2 vCPUs, 4 GB RAM, 80 GB storage, and 3 TB bandwidth.
  2. Install the streaming stack. Install OBS Studio and FFmpeg, then arrange remote desktop access so you can configure OBS on the server. This is a self-managed setup: you are responsible for the operating system, installed software, access, and server configuration.
  3. Transfer media to the server. Use SFTP, FTP, SCP, or Rsync to put the recording or playlist files where the remote OBS session can access them.
  4. Configure the destination. In OBS, select the destination service or custom stream URL and enter the YouTube stream key.
  5. Configure video output. Set the canvas and output resolution and frame rate, then choose a bitrate appropriate to the resolution and current YouTube guidance. Vultr’s Ubuntu guide includes bitrate ranges by resolution and FPS; treat those as tutorial recommendations rather than universal settings, and check the platform’s current requirements.
  6. Set up the source and looping. Add a Media Source for one file and enable Loop, or configure a VLC Video Source playlist for multiple files. Preview playback and check the Audio Mixer.
  7. Enable automatic reconnect and go live. Configure OBS automatic reconnect settings, start streaming, and verify the incoming broadcast in YouTube Studio. A working OBS preview by itself does not prove viewers can see the stream.

Secure access and verify the broadcast

  • Protect the generated Marketplace web password, remote desktop credentials, and YouTube stream key as secrets.
  • For domain-based access, Vultr recommends using a trusted SSL certificate. Restrict critical ports, including RTMP port 1935, to trusted IP addresses with Vultr Firewall where applicable.
  • Check the destination-side live status and playback after starting OBS. Confirm the correct source is visible and audio is present; do not rely only on the local preview.
  • Monitor OBS and server resource use during operation. The cited Vultr guides do not provide independent measurements of uptime, CPU load, bandwidth use, or stream quality.

Troubleshooting

Symptom Likely check What to do
OBS preview is black or the clip does not play The remote server may not have the file, or the source may point to the wrong path. Confirm the upload completed, browse to the file on the server, and reopen the Media Source. Check that the file plays in preview.
A single video plays once and stops Loop may be disabled on the Media Source. Edit the Media Source and enable Loop. For several files, configure a VLC Video Source playlist instead.
OBS shows output but YouTube is not live The destination service, stream URL, or stream key may be incorrect, or YouTube may not be receiving the broadcast. Recheck the OBS destination settings and key, then verify the incoming stream and status in YouTube Studio.
Video works but audio is missing The source may not be registering audio in OBS. Check the Audio Mixer while previewing the media, then verify audio on the destination-side stream.
Stream disconnects OBS may not be configured to reconnect, or the destination connection may have dropped. Enable automatic reconnect in OBS and check that the server and stream destination remain reachable. Confirm YouTube receives the resumed output.
High-resolution output is unstable or burdens the server Higher resolution and FPS require more processing than lower settings. Lower the output resolution or frame rate and use a bitrate suited to the revised settings. Vultr suggests 720p for its tutorial’s server with two or more vCPUs; actual suitability depends on the workload.
Remote access is exposed or credentials are lost The browser interface, remote desktop, or critical ports may be insufficiently protected. Secure credentials, use SSL for domain-based access, and restrict access to critical ports such as RTMP 1935 to trusted IP addresses using Vultr Firewall where applicable.

Check platform rules before leaving a stream on

A technical setup does not establish that a particular recording is eligible to stream or monetize. Check YouTube’s current rules for copyright, reused content, live streaming, and any permissions needed for the material. The Vultr setup guides do not determine whether a platform permits a specific video, playlist, or broadcast duration. Confirm the destination’s current requirements before scheduling a continuous stream.
