How to Compare VPS Performance for 24/7 YouTube Streaming

There is no universal VPS size for 24/7 YouTube streaming. Compare plans against your actual bitrate and encoding workload, then test the stream and its recovery.

Compare a VPS against the stream you will actually send—not a universal “recommended server size.” Set the resolution, frame rate, codec, bitrate, and whether the VPS must encode or only pass through media. Then check sustained outbound capacity and traffic allowance, test the real workflow from the intended region, and verify both server metrics and YouTube’s stream health.

Start with the actual streaming workload

A VPS that can relay a compatible pre-encoded file has a different job from one that must encode or transcode video in real time. Before comparing plans, write down the workload you intend to run:

  • Resolution and frame rate.
  • Video codec and target bitrate.
  • Whether the VPS will copy compatible media or encode/transcode it.
  • Whether you need to record locally, which adds storage and disk monitoring requirements.

YouTube’s current encoder guidance supports RTMP/RTMPS and video codecs H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1. It recommends constant bitrate (CBR), frame rates up to 60 fps, and a two-second keyframe interval, not exceeding four seconds. Its H.264 recommendations include 5–14 Mbps for 1080p30, 6–17 Mbps for 1080p60, 3–8 Mbps for 720p30, and 3–8 Mbps for 720p60. YouTube publishes separate recommendations for H.265/HEVC and AV1. These are encoder settings, not evidence that a given VPS can sustain an uninterrupted stream. See YouTube’s live encoder settings and bitrate guidance.

YouTube recommends using RTMPS, which it describes as RTMP through an SSL connection. Configure the encoder for the ingest protocol supported by your stream, and test that exact configuration before relying on it.

Compare the VPS on the factors that affect a continuous stream

CPU: match the allocation to encoding work

Compare the provider’s stated vCPU allocation, but do not treat the vCPU count as a performance guarantee. Observe CPU behavior during a representative encode at your intended settings. Encoding demand depends on the codec, resolution, frame rate, and encoder configuration; there is no universal vCPU or RAM requirement established by YouTube’s guidance. If you plan to copy already compatible media without re-encoding, test that pass-through workflow rather than applying an encoding benchmark to it.

Outbound network and traffic allowance

Your VPS must continuously send the configured stream to YouTube. Compare the plan’s sustained outbound capacity, included traffic, overage terms, and any network restrictions against your target bitrate and billing period. Do not assume that an advertised port speed is guaranteed sustained throughput. Verify terms directly with the provider and, where possible, measure behavior from the region and plan you intend to use. There is no evidence-based universal headroom percentage or provider ranking for this use case.

Network stability and operational recovery

Ask what the provider’s reliability terms cover, and distinguish a host outage from an encoder process failure or a disrupted connection to YouTube. Check whether you can supervise the encoder, detect errors, and restart or reconnect after interruption. A running VPS or encoder process does not prove that YouTube is receiving a healthy stream.

Memory, storage, and monitoring

Observe memory use alongside CPU during a representative run. Storage is relevant if the workflow records locally; include disk space, disk behavior, and any backup needs in the comparison. Plan to monitor host CPU and memory, encoder process errors, outbound network behavior, and storage when recording, as well as YouTube’s stream-health feedback.

Calculate the continuing traffic requirement

A constant bitrate produces continuing outbound traffic for as long as the stream runs. To estimate video traffic before overhead, multiply the target bitrate in megabits per second by the number of seconds in the billing period, then divide by eight to convert megabits to megabytes; convert to the provider’s stated units as needed. For example, use the actual target bitrate and the hours or days in your intended billing period rather than a short event estimate. Then check how the provider defines traffic units, whether transfer is metered or capped, and what happens if the allowance is exceeded. This calculation is an estimate of stream payload, not a provider’s traffic-metering guarantee.

Run a like-for-like candidate test

  1. Fix the settings. Choose the actual resolution, frame rate, codec, target bitrate, ingest protocol, and copy or encode path. Decide whether local recording is part of the workload.
  2. Check plan terms. Confirm outbound capacity, traffic allowance and overage terms, network restrictions, resource allocation, region, and storage details on the candidate plan. Include monitoring, backups, and maintenance in the total cost and effort.
  3. Run the real workload. Use the intended media and encoder settings on the candidate VPS. Observe CPU, memory, output errors, network behavior, and dropped or late output. A test using copy mode does not establish performance for a transcode workflow, or vice versa.
  4. Test YouTube ingest. Send a private or unlisted test stream, or use another appropriate test setup, with the actual ingest configuration. Review YouTube’s stream-health feedback; YouTube recommends testing before streaming and monitoring health during a stream.
  5. Exercise recovery. Test an encoder restart and a connection interruption. Confirm how the process reconnects and whether YouTube reports a healthy incoming stream afterward. YouTube’s Live Streaming API documents primary and backup ingestion information and stream status or health-related fields; those fields help assess the stream and are not a VPS-provider uptime guarantee. See the YouTube LiveStreams API reference.
  6. Compare the result and operating burden. Compare the observed behavior and the plan’s current costs and traffic terms alongside the time needed to monitor, maintain, and recover the stream. Do not select a plan from a provider’s headline speed or CPU label alone.

How to judge the result

A candidate is a better fit when it sustains the exact workflow you need, stays within the plan’s network and traffic terms, and gives you workable monitoring and recovery options. If you need encoding, judge it under the intended encode; if you only need pass-through, test that path. Use YouTube’s stream-health feedback as a separate check from host-level metrics.

YouTube’s official documentation defines ingest and encoder behavior, but it does not certify VPS providers or prescribe a universal server size for continuous streaming. No controlled, like-for-like provider benchmark is established here, so a claim that one current host is the fastest or most reliable would require fresh comparable testing.

Common comparison mistakes

  • Buying by vCPU count alone: allocation labels do not show sustained performance under your encode; test the workload.
  • Trusting port speed as continuous throughput: verify sustained egress terms and observe the connection from the intended region.
  • Ignoring traffic billing: continuous bitrate accumulates transfer for the whole billing period; calculate it and confirm metering and overage rules.
  • Testing a different workflow: a copy-mode test does not establish real-time encoding capacity. Match the test to the intended media path.
  • Watching only the server: process status and host metrics cannot replace YouTube’s stream-health feedback.
  • Skipping failure tests: verify restart and reconnect behavior before depending on a 24/7 operation.
