First find which host returned it and whether the failed request was an encoder upload to YouTube, a playback request to an AWS Elemental MediaPackage endpoint, or a response from a CDN or proxy. Those are different requests with different URLs and fixes.
Identify the request that returned 404
Capture the full failing URL with sensitive values redacted, the HTTP method, timestamp, response body, and response headers. Preserve the hostname, path, and query parameter names; redact stream keys, authorization headers, signed query values, and account identifiers before sharing logs.
- YouTube HLS ingest: The encoder uploads playlists and media segments to the HTTPS HLS ingestion URL shown for the stream in YouTube Live Control Room. This is an upload destination, not a playback URL. YouTube’s HLS setup guide explains when to use HLS ingestion.
- MediaPackage playback: A player or CDN requests a manifest, child playlist, or segment from a MediaPackage endpoint. Use the generated endpoint URL and configured manifest name.
- MediaPackage ingest: An upstream encoder or AWS MediaLive sends content into MediaPackage using the ingest configuration for the MediaPackage generation in use. This is separate from both YouTube ingest and MediaPackage playback.
- CDN or proxy: A visible 404 may have been generated by an intermediary rather than the origin. If the design permits, compare the response through the CDN with a direct-origin request and review the intermediary’s logs.
Follow the request direction before changing configuration. A MediaPackage playback URL cannot replace YouTube’s HLS ingest URL, and a YouTube upload URL is not a MediaPackage playback origin.
If a MediaPackage playback manifest or segment returns 404
Check forced endpoint-error settings
In the MediaPackage v2 endpoint configuration, inspect Force endpoint error configuration. AWS documents optional 404 responses for stale or incomplete manifests, missing DRM keys, and slate input. In a failover workflow, this can be an intentional health signal while problematic segments leave the exposed timeline, rather than proof that the endpoint path is absent. Correlate the error time with input interruptions, timeline gaps, key rotation, or slate detection before changing the setting. See AWS’s MediaPackage v2 origin endpoint configuration.

Compare manifest filters with the exact query string
Check whether the endpoint has a manifest filter and whether the request also includes a matching query parameter. AWS documents that this combination can return 404. In a controlled test, correct the filter syntax or remove the redundant matching parameter; avoid changing a production request without accounting for how the filter is used.
Copy the configured manifest URL
Use the live endpoint details or API output to obtain the generated URL rather than guessing the path. The HLS manifest name is part of the URL; index is the default only when no manifest name has been configured. A renamed manifest, recreated endpoint, or stale copied URL can leave a player requesting an obsolete path. See AWS’s endpoint setup documentation.

Find the first failing resource
- Request the top-level HLS manifest directly and record its status and response.
- If it succeeds, follow the child playlist URI and then its segment URIs.
- Record the first path that returns 404. A missing segment and a missing top-level manifest are not necessarily the same problem.
Check that the upstream is still sending media and that the track, container, and codecs are supported for the specific MediaPackage version and endpoint type. AWS support varies by generation and endpoint; AV1, for example, is supported only on CMAF endpoint types. Consult the applicable MediaPackage input and output support guidance.
If YouTube HLS ingest returns 404
- In YouTube Live Control Room, confirm the stream is configured for HLS and copy the current HLS ingestion URL and the corresponding HLS stream key. Do not substitute an RTMP destination or a MediaPackage playback endpoint. See YouTube’s HLS setup instructions.
- Check the encoder’s destination and logs to confirm it is making the expected HTTPS upload requests to that URL. YouTube’s HLS specification describes HTTP PUT or POST uploads for the media playlist and segments: YouTube Live HLS ingestion protocol.
- Validate the encoder output against YouTube’s requirements for playlist type, single-stream and muxed audio/video, transport, media container and codecs, sequence numbers, and filenames. Do not assume an HLS output accepted by another origin meets YouTube’s ingestion rules.
- Check whether the stream key or session was replaced and the encoder retained an older destination. Keep keys and signed values out of public logs and support tickets.
Confirm which MediaPackage generation and ingest mode you use
Do not apply v1 assumptions to v2. AWS documents MediaPackage v2 live inputs using HLS or CMAF, with supported output types and codecs varying by endpoint. MediaPackage v1 has distinct requirements; its HLS input documentation specifies WebDAV with digest authentication and unencrypted media segments. Verify the service generation and input mode against AWS’s supported input and output information and the relevant live input documentation.

For a MediaLive-to-MediaPackage v2 workflow, AWS currently recommends the MediaPackage output group configured for CMAF Ingest for new workflows. That recommendation applies to the MediaLive-to-MediaPackage leg; it does not turn a MediaPackage output URL into a YouTube upload URL. See AWS’s MediaPackage output group guidance.

- MediaPackage generation (v1 or v2), AWS Region, and channel or endpoint identifiers.
- Failing host and path, redacted sensitive query values, HTTP method, timestamp, status, response body, and headers.
- Encoder output configuration and the source and output media characteristics.
- Whether the request went directly to the origin or through a CDN or proxy, and the result of any direct-origin comparison.
Without the actual failing request and response, the title alone cannot establish which service issued the 404 or identify one root cause.
