You can keep a YouTube Live stream playing from a Vultr Cloud Compute server by running OBS Studio on an Ubuntu instance, uploading your media to that server, and enabling OBS’s Loop option for the source. YouTube receives the feed from the server, so your personal computer does not need to stay on. Vultr documents this OBS workflow and advises uploading source files for a 24/7 stream; the tutorial is a setup guide, not a promise of uninterrupted uptime or a guarantee that every playlist format will work unchanged. Vultr’s OBS and Ubuntu guide and Vultr’s Broadcaster guide are the provider references.

What this setup does—and what “playlist” means here

The documented method is to run OBS Studio on the server and loop a media source stored there. In this article, “playlist” means the file or source being repeated in OBS, not a promise that every playlist file type or ordered multi-file playlist can be loaded without adjustment. Vultr’s Broadcaster instructions support uploading source files and checking OBS’s Loop option for a 24/7 stream. If you need a sequence of several files, verify that your OBS source and media format behave as intended before broadcasting.

YouTube distinguishes the incoming audio/video feed (the stream and its settings) from the broadcast event viewers watch. A stream can be reused across recurring broadcasts; YouTube’s API documentation also describes a scenario in which a 24/7 broadcast can coexist with a second broadcast using the same live feed. See YouTube Live Streaming API documentation for the broadcast lifecycle details.

1. Choose and provision a Vultr server

Create a Vultr Cloud Compute instance with an Ubuntu image. Vultr’s OBS/Ubuntu tutorial lists 2 vCPUs, 4 GB RAM, 80 GB storage, and 3 TB bandwidth as prerequisites for its example. These figures are the tutorial’s baseline, not a benchmark, a guaranteed minimum for every workload, or a promise that any resolution and bitrate will run well.

Whether for home entertainment, remote work, or conference room presentations, it delivers an immersive visual experience. Two USB 3.2 Gen2 Type‑A ports (up to 10Gbps – 21x faster than USB 2.0) make data transfers and device expansion a breeze.
  • 【USB 3.2 Gen2 Type‑C: 10Gbps & Versatile Connectivity】The USB 3.2 Gen2 Type‑C port on the KAMRUI P2 small pc supports 10Gbps data transfer speeds and can also output DisplayPort 1.4 video. Together with Gigabit LAN, Wi‑Fi, and Bluetooth, you get a fast, flexible, and productive connected environment – wired or wireless.

Choose the instance by considering the amount of encoding work, disk space for the media, and monthly outbound bandwidth. Vultr describes Cloud Compute as shared-CPU virtual machines and supports scaling compute, memory, storage, and bandwidth configurations. Shared CPU does not establish that a particular software-encoding workload will keep up; monitor actual CPU use and dropped frames, and consider a larger or dedicated-CPU option if needed. Review Vultr’s Cloud Compute documentation and provisioning guidance when selecting a plan. Current plan prices and allowances are not established here, so check the provider’s current plan details before estimating cost.

2. Install OBS Studio and FFmpeg

Follow Vultr’s Ubuntu streaming-server tutorial to install OBS Studio and FFmpeg. The documented path uses OBS’s interface. The available provider instructions do not supply a complete, supported headless FFmpeg command for arbitrary playlists, so do not treat this GUI procedure as a ready-made command-line service recipe.

3. Create the YouTube Live event and protect the key

  1. In YouTube Studio, create or schedule the live broadcast and retrieve the stream URL and stream key. YouTube’s interface may change; follow the current live setup screen for your channel. Vultr’s tutorial walks through configuring OBS with YouTube’s service and stream details.
  2. In OBS, select the YouTube service and enter the stream URL and key as prompted by the interface and current YouTube setup. Do not publish, share, or commit the key to a public file: it is a credential that authorizes sending a feed to your channel.
  3. Keep the broadcast private or otherwise restricted while checking the media and connection, if that option suits your test. Confirm that the preview shows the intended video and audio before starting the public broadcast.

4. Upload the media and configure looping

  1. Copy the source media to the Vultr server. Vultr specifically advises uploading the source files to the server for a 24/7 stream rather than relying on a file on your personal computer.
  2. In OBS, add the media source using the server-side file. Enable the source’s Loop option so playback repeats when it reaches the end.
  3. Check the OBS preview and audio meters: confirm that video and sound are present, that the beginning and end behave as expected, and that replay starts as intended. This is an operational check; the provider guide supports uploading and looping, but does not document every media format or multi-file playlist behavior.
  4. Start the broadcast only after the source and YouTube connection are ready. Watch the YouTube live status and OBS output during initial operation.

5. Choose an ingestion protocol

YouTube supports RTMP, RTMPS, HLS, and DASH for third-party ingestion. The Vultr OBS tutorial follows the YouTube stream URL/key workflow. Use the protocol supported by your encoder and compatible with the channel’s setup rather than guessing an endpoint.

Protocol family Encryption and use Latency and compatibility considerations
RTMP Unencrypted transport YouTube lists it for normal through ultra-low latency. Use the URL and key supplied for your live setup.
RTMPS RTMP tunneled through SSL; Google describes it as “a regular RTMP (RealTime Messaging Protocol) video stream tunneled through an SSL connection.” Listed for normal through ultra-low latency. The encoder needs the correct RTMPS URL/path, port 443, and server hostname for SNI authentication.
HLS and DASH Encrypted options Associated with advanced codecs and higher latency; check encoder support and the resolution/codec requirements for the intended stream.

See Google’s YouTube ingestion protocol comparison and RTMPS ingestion requirements. For RTMPS, use the correct address returned by the channel’s live setup or API response. Do not substitute a made-up endpoint: port 443 and the hostname used for SNI are part of the documented connection requirements.

6. Size for encoding, storage, and egress

The server must read the media, encode or relay the output as configured, and send a continuous feed to YouTube. Vultr recommends watching CPU and bandwidth in its OBS tutorial; high CPU load can cause dropped frames. Reduce output demands or increase compute if the encoder cannot keep up.

Estimate monthly outbound data using the configured outgoing bitrate and total streaming hours, then allow for protocol overhead and compare the result with the plan’s current bandwidth allowance. A higher bitrate increases transfer use; stored source files also need to fit on disk. The tutorial’s 3 TB bandwidth prerequisite is not a universal allowance recommendation, and no universal bitrate or current Vultr price is established here. Confirm the selected instance’s live terms and monitor actual usage.

7. Keep the connection recoverable and secure

  • Reconnect: Vultr’s OBS tutorial recommends configuring automatic reconnect. Test how OBS behaves after a brief network interruption before relying on unattended operation.
  • Startup and restarts: A supervised startup or restart mechanism can help an unattended server recover after a reboot, but the cited tutorials do not provide a tested systemd service definition for this setup. Validate any such mechanism against the Ubuntu and OBS versions you deploy.
  • Firewall: A push encoder connecting outward to YouTube over RTMPS on port 443 does not, by itself, require public inbound RTMP on port 1935. That inbound port is relevant to systems receiving RTMP input or operating an RTMP relay, not simply to OBS pushing a stream to YouTube.
  • Administration: Restrict SSH and other administrative access to trusted sources. Check both Vultr Firewall Groups and the Ubuntu host firewall if the server cannot connect or be administered as intended. See Vultr Firewall Groups documentation.

Copyright, YouTube rules, and continuity

Use only media you own or are authorized to broadcast, including music, footage, and any material embedded in the file. A 24/7 loop does not grant permission to reuse copyrighted content. Review YouTube’s current copyright and live-stream policies in YouTube Studio and the applicable official help pages before going live. YouTube may interrupt or restrict a broadcast; automatic reconnect is a recovery measure, not a guarantee that a stream will remain available or that a broadcast can continue despite a policy or rights issue.

Or let it run in the cloud
