Yes, you can run an encoder on Amazon EC2 and send a 24/7 live stream to YouTube. But that does not mean the complete setup will be free. Eligibility depends on your AWS account’s creation date, plan, instance type and offer terms. Storage, network transfer, CPU-credit charges and other usage may add costs. Check your account’s offer and billing view before leaving an instance running continuously.
What “EC2 Free Tier” means for an always-on stream
EC2 supplies the virtual machine; you choose and operate the encoding software that sends video to YouTube. AWS free offers apply under specific account and usage conditions, not as a blanket promise that every part of a 24/7 streaming setup costs nothing. AWS says usage beyond applicable limits can be billed, and account benefits vary by plan and creation date. AWS EC2 Free Tier usage guidance and AWS Free Tier terms are the places to verify your account’s current status.
Which AWS account cohort applies?
AWS distinguishes accounts created before July 15, 2025 from accounts created on or after that date. The eligible instance types and duration differ between those cohorts, so do not assume a type listed for one account applies to yours. Check eligibility for your actual account and Region.
| Account creation date | EC2 instances listed by AWS | Offer period described |
|---|---|---|
| Before July 15, 2025 | t2.micro and t3.micro | 12-month Free Tier period, subject to limits |
| On or after July 15, 2025 | t3.micro, t3.small, t4g.micro, t4g.small, c7i-flex.large and m7i-flex.large | Six months from account creation or until credits are used, whichever comes first |
These are the instance types and terms listed in AWS’s EC2 Free Tier usage documentation. Your own account’s offer status and regional availability are decisive; a general AWS listing is not proof that a particular instance is free for you.

- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
A separate t4g.small trial has a cutoff
AWS’s EC2 FAQ describes a t4g.small trial offering 750 aggregate instance-hours per month across Regions through December 31, 2026. The FAQ also warns that surplus CPU credits may be charged. This is a time-limited, terms-dependent offer, not evidence that storage, network transfer or other services used by your streaming setup are covered. Confirm its availability and terms in your AWS account before relying on it. AWS EC2 FAQs
What a 24/7 YouTube setup requires
At a high level, the EC2 instance must run an encoder that can read or generate your video and send it to your YouTube live stream using the stream key and ingest settings YouTube provides. YouTube recommends RTMPS and publishes encoder settings by resolution and frame rate. Choose the bitrate for your intended output rather than treating one figure as right for every stream; consult YouTube’s current table for the configuration you plan to use. Do not assume that an eligible small instance can encode a particular resolution, frame rate or codec reliably. AWS and YouTube’s cited guidance do not establish performance for a specific EC2 type and workload. Validate your chosen encoder settings on the actual instance before depending on it for continuous operation.
Check the full bill, not just instance hours
The total cost cannot be determined from Free Tier eligibility alone. It depends on the account’s cohort and plan, Region, instance, stream settings and the other services your configuration uses. Check the AWS billing console and offer status, and estimate the specific configuration before running it continuously. AWS notes that eligible usage beyond limits or credits can be billed. AWS’s Live Streaming on AWS deployment guide estimates $3,838.69 for approximately 100 viewers and 200 monthly HD live-event hours in US East (N. Virginia), under the guide’s assumptions. That is an example for AWS’s managed live-streaming solution, which includes service components such as encoding/packaging and distribution; it is not a price estimate for one EC2 instance sending a stream to YouTube. EC2 versus managed streaming services
EC2 is a self-managed compute host: you select and operate the instance and encoder, and assess account-specific Free Tier eligibility. A managed streaming service is a different stack with its own configuration and pricing, which may depend on inputs, outputs and distribution. Workload, audience and operating time affect the decision; the available AWS cost example does not establish a universal best choice for every channel.
- StreamNeo — the cloud option to consider first for a continuously looping YouTube channel: it keeps uploaded video live from the cloud, at any uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and offers a free first day.
- EC2: gives you control over the virtual machine and encoder, but you are responsible for setup, workload validation and monitoring the account’s charges.
- AWS managed streaming or IVS: uses separate service components and pricing; assess its costs and features for your specific audience and workflow rather than treating its allowances as EC2 credits.
Or let it run in the cloud
With StreamNeo, upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. StreamNeo loops uploaded video from the cloud, so nothing has to stay on at home. Every slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; automatic recovery can restart the stream if YouTube drops it. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month. Start your free StreamNeo day.
